A Taj Mahal Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Word association:  India.
Taj Mahal?
Correct!  So that's one of the few things we know for sure about India.  Did we go and check it out?  Well, of course we did.

The first thing we realized is that it's a lot bigger than we imagined.  If you zoom in on #1 you'll see the people walking around the base.  It's really majestic.  Built as a mausoleum by Shah Jahan in the mid 1600's for the rulers beloved wife, they took pains to make it look a bit mosque-like to not incur the wrath of the Muslims.  In fact the west gate is still a mosque and the whole place is closed on Friday's for Muslim services, even though none are held in the Taj (after you've been there all morning you can call it the "Taj" for short.) itself...

More wind this morning, but now mostly from the north, 13 to 15kts.  The sea surface was chopped up and the sky was mostly clear.  The air temperature was 57.5 and the water is 58.1.  Low tide was at 7:53am +0.3' and high tide will be at 2:43pm +2.9'.  There's a SSW swell out of 199º at 5.9' and it was 5' to 7' and pretty ragged...

Ever try taking a photo of the Taj Mahal and make it look different than all of the other photos you've seen of it?  This #2, is our feeble attempt...

Of course, one of the views you rarely (#3) see is from the back of the Taj   You can see the holy river Yamuna in the foreground and a bit of the gardens on this side of the river...

Paver, Diane, LoLa and the Professor taking the obligatory portrait.  One thing to note is the hazy atmosphere.  Delhi had some of the worst smog you can imagine.  There are thousands of polluting vehicles there and they burn coal for electricity.  Makes for some crunchy air...

Laurel Tavern, be there or be square...
