Kathmandu, Kat Man Don't Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Almost every building in Kathmandu is undergoing reconstruction since the devastating 7.8 earthquake of April 2015.  Over 750,000 structures were destroyed, 9,000 people died and over 20,000 were injured.  Most people stayed outside for over four months until the aftershocks subsided.  This (#1) is the temple square and is undergoing extensive reconstruction.  There are before and after photos at most sites showing what was there and what was left...

As our more normal wind patterns return, we had 10 miles visibility under clear skies.  Winds were out of the SE by 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 53.9 and the water was 56.3, but felt almost 60 in the lineup.  High tide was at 8:29am +5.4' and low tide will be at 2:43pm -0.5'.  We have a SW swell out of 235º at 3.0', but it bumped a bit and it was a solid 4' with some good to great rollers working through the high tide!  Check it mañana...

Across from the temple square we met up with this guy (#2) sporting a Redondo High vest.  He lettered in Mountain Climbing...

Yes, we did get right up to the edge of the Himalayas (#3 & #4).  At the bottom of photo #3 you can just make out a signboard with the profile of the Himalayas (and it is pronounced him-ALL-yas, so you can annoy your friends) from this spot.  We were already at some considerable altitude, but this was like comparing the Coastal Range to the Sierras.  These are BIG mountains!  We were hiking about a hundred miles from Everest and we declined the offer to take a private plane around the mountain.  Just this week we read that one of the contract flyers crashed on his landing in Kathmandu, ostensibly one of the most dangerous airports in the world...

Paver took the chance to rest his Himalayan rock collection (#5) before galloping off to the next destination.  True to their roots, Paver and the Professor did most of their ambling in flip-flops...
