My Little Rock 'N Roll Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... " A nd ANOTHER thing..."  The Professor appears to be proclaiming his disappointment with the temperature of the water.  Despite the postings on the Hermosa Pier (67º last Saturday) it still feels more like it does at the buoy 63.3...  Still Bacalao is sporting a shorty... A lways takes a few minutes for us to catch up with the report after the holiday, but the bad news is that it's still cloudy and May Gray.  The good news is that the wind is offshore by 2.2kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The other bad news is that the air is 60 and the water is back to 63.3.  Low tide was at 9:15am -0.2' and high tide will be at 4:24pm +4.3'.  But the OTHER good news is that there's a good 3.3' swell out of the SW from 224º and it was 3' to almost 4' and lots of fun, just ask Jetski... B amboo, dark green and that retro thing...  Tandis and the Professor show off their rides.  They really didn't think about how much they compliment

Lost Boys & Co... B ack to the roots...  The Professor here, attempting to harvest the roots from this native specie of fig.  His plan is to plane these into planks and then fashion them into a surf craft...  Good luck... A n almost perfect example of "May Gray" this morning with sky, sea and sand all taking on muted hues.  1 mile visibility and winds persistent out of the SW at 5.5kts.  The sea surface had a light chop working.  The air temperature was 58.8 and the water was 61.0.  High tide is at 9:13am +4.4' and low tide will be at 2:35pm +0.9'.  We have a SW swell out of 217º at 3.0' and it was 2' on the beach... T heir combined radiance almost eclipsing the sun, we have Jetski and Bacallao watching the day go down on the deck of Palacio Bacallao high in the Hermosa Alps.  If your plan is to heal the bay, this is where you start... " I f the sign offends you, rip it out and park there no more!"  LoLa, venting her wrath Hermosa style...  Sca

Lost Boys & Co... F rankie and Todd, the guys from Syrup Surf Co. never miss a chance to get into the water.  On this morning (#1) the tide was pretty well killing it, but they decided that they could find a peak if they were patient.  Voila!  They milked this little sandbar for about as much as it had in it... O vercast skies this morning with about a mile visibility.  Winds were once again light onshore by 1.2kts and the sea surface was calm.  The air temperature was 59.9 and the water was 61.7 at the buoy, but felt more like 65 in the surfline.  High tide was at 8:21am +4.3' and low tide will be at 1:54pm +0.8'.  We have a SSW swell out of 192º at 3.0' and it was 2' to 3' with the rising tide.  Surprisingly fun C hé, with some of his handiwork (#2 & #3) installed in a retro Airstream Trailer.  These tables are so great that you hardly want to put anything down on them... (Photo #1)  "H ey Tio!  Come here and label these fins."  Ché, the Professor and the Mangiagli crew put together these fins for trophies for the Redondo Surf Team.  If they don't make you surf better, nothing will! U ncle Charlie was shouting into the phone, "My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart!" The doctor asked, "Is this her first child?" "No!" he shouted, "this is her husband!"   A fter a fabulous weekend, Monday dawned with our patented "May Gray."  Visibility was half a mile and overcast all morning.  Winds were light on shore by 1.6kts with a slight bump.  The air temperature was 59.8 and the water is trying at 60.6.  High tide is at 7:26am +4.2' and low tide will be at 1:14pm +0.6'.  We have a SSW swell out of 192º at 3.0' and it was 2' to 3' and some entertaining little rollers if you wee interested...   Lost Boys & Co... T hese are the only three people we could find who knew that this was the Azorean Flag!  From L. to R.  Suzi, Hugo and the Professor.  The Azores are part of Portugal, but they're not in any hurry to make a big deal about that... A nthony Renna is known for his fantastic nature photos and surfing water shots.  But this telephoto from the pier (#2) is especially interesting in that you don't immediately see the surfer in the foreground.  It takes a lot of patience to get a pic like this, but it also helps to have Kris Hall as a subject.  Anthony is also a credible body surfer and in one moment he's snagging some fabulous tube shot and the next he's sliding down a little nugget next to the pier. H appy hour this week will be at the Laurel Tavern in beautiful downtown Hermosa Beach.  The fun starts at 5:30pm or whenever YOU get there...   Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have Jetski (photo #1) giving a seminar on the proper method of applying wax to a surfboard.  He has obviously found and eager and enthusiastic student in the Professor (photo #2).  The Professor said, "You know after all these years you kinda get into a rut on the application of wax.  Like little circles or broad swipes across the board.  The "Vishnevsky Method®" incorporates the diagonal application, leading to increased grip and a aesthetically pleasant finish.  I will use it on all my boards!"  (photos:  René Evette for Wax-On Quarterly ) C loudy this morning and it even looked like it might rain.  Winds were out of the SE by 6.0kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 58.3 and the water was 61.0 at the buoy but felt a bit colder in the lineup.  High tide was at 10:12am +4.0' and low tide will be at 3:27pm +1.4'.  We have a west swell out of 276º at 3.6' and it looked a tad bigger in the water.  We

T here is a reason why there are no more mermaids...  ( "Mermaid Suite" by Suzi Paine ) O vercast this morning and the offshores are howling out of the ESE at 10kts.  The sea surface is rolling glass.  The air temperature was 57.3 and the water has dipped again to 58.6.  High tide is at 9:34am +4.1' and low tide will be at 3:01pm +1.2'.  We have a west swell out of 276º at 4.3' and it was bigger than that with most sets being in the 4' to head-high range.  Surf was good all day with the persistent offshore winds... W e live in a beautiful place and on a day like today when the winds are offshore and the clouds are scudding across the sky and the manes on the waves are blowing whiter than white, it's just a bit more fabulous...   Lost Boys & Co... I n photo #1 we have Jetski regarding the camera with the slightest bit of contempt.  We're getting ready to go surfing.  The surf is good.  We are meeting Suzi.  Can we carry on now...?  Thank you... P artly cloudy this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds wee light out of the SW by 5.6kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 47.3 un-May-like degrees and the water was 58.6.  High tide was at 8:56am +4.2' and low tide will be at 2:35pm +0.9'.  We have a WSW swell out of 250º at 4.6' and it was 3' to 5' and made for a pretty good session... W e get a call from our weather expert in Boise, Idaho, warning us that an extremely volatile weather cell is moving in our direction.  We ignore the warning, A:  Because it's California and it never rains (despite a whole year of evidence to the contrary!)  B:  Our weather expert is in Boise, Idaho and Redondo Beach is a cool thousand miles away.  C:  It's not raining at

A nother May gray with 4 miles visibility.  Winds were onshore from daybreak at 2.7kts at checkout and the sea surface was lightly chopped.  The air temp was 57.7 and the water temp is 62.2.  High tide was at 6:27am +4.3' and low tide will follow at 12:52pm +0.2'.  We have at 3' swell out of the SSW 196º and it was 2' to 3' and really only happening from Manhattan north...  Supposed to rain tomorrow and the weather pattern is a bit unstable... B umped into this (#2) on our way out of a dark warehouse.  It's like, "Oh yeah, this is kinda, really dangerous and be careful even though it's in a dark corner that you can't see on the way out..." ✠⚡️ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

A nderson holding court, while the Professor, Jon and Jetski are in rapt attention.  Jetski had just asked him if he liked to color and he said, "No, I really prefer drawing.  The whole staying-in-the-lines thing really bugs me.  I like to start out with a blank piece of paper and just let the pencil and the paper dictate what happens.  Some mornings it's trucks, sometimes it's buses or heavy equipment.  Lately I've been experimenting with a pointillistic approach.  I'm still working out my small motor control, but it's a great stress reliever..." M ay gray and 4 miles visibility.  Winds wee on from the start by 1.8kts and the sea surface was a bit ruffled.  The air temp was 61.3 and the water is 62.6.  High tide was at 5:16am +4.3' and low tide will follow at 12:04pm +0.1'.  We have a SSW swell out of 202º at 3.3' and it was a high tide floated 2' to 3' and not quite deluxe... T he only time your leash tangles around your feet is when you have a nice Pier-Nug like this little one the Professor snagged...  So what to do?  Well, make it look as intentional as possible and say things like, "The tube was going to be so small I had to get on my knees to fit in it..." B lue skies with a bit of ambient haze.  Visibility 10 miles.  Winds were offshore by 3.2kts and the sea surface was smooth/glassy.  The air temperature was 58.6 and the water is 62.8.  Low tide is at 11:05am -0.1' and high tide will be at 6:07pm +4.3'.  We have an oblique SSW swell out of 210º at 3.0' and it was 2' to 3' on a lowering tide.  Some high tides in the a.m. coming up, so if there's a swell it could work at some spots... A t the end of the school year when the surf is small, we let the kids choose their own adventure.  Some folks go out for the small surf and try out long or different boards, some try slack lining under the Pier.

Lost Boys & Co... F irst Mike Karg visits from Switzerland and spreads his own brand of Euro-elan and culture, then Marcel Lagnaz has us over for some al fresco grilling and now Julie Bachmann (#1), comes surfing through town checking out the marketing possibilities in So Cal.  Julie, who lives in Bern, is the Sales Rep for Quicksilver/Roxy Europe and is entertaining the notion of resettling in the US.  Obviously a top-tier sales person, Julie will be sending us her resumé if you'd like to take a look!  We're just wondering if Switzerland needs to put up a wall...
