Fat Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co...   S o, the average American ingested 4500 calories yesterday!  And we know we all like to think of ourselves as just a bit above average.  Well, even though there was a bit of precipitation, it was still crack-a-lackin' and requiring the right amount of energy to make brekky an option and still burn off some of those turkey BTU's.  Here's a reeling left on the north-side of the Hermosa Pier going off unridden...   R ainin' pretty steady and 5 miles visibility under an extremely low ceiling.  Winds were off all day yesterday and lookin' like they might today as well.  3.7kts right now and the sea surface is smooth, with almost no surface tension from the rain.  The air temp is 57.5˚ and the water is 62.4˚, so not freezing, but cool gray.  High tide was early at 5:59am +5.8' and low tide will follow at 12:54pm +0.3'.  We have a generous west swell out of 267˚ at 5.2' and it's hitting straight on, with waves in the 3' to 5&#

Happy Thanksgiving Thursday

Image
Lost Boys & Co... M uch like the first Thanksgiving, the braves had a hard time getting into the bathroom because all of the squaws were braiding hair, adjusting headbands and applying paint.  Getting ready for the Torrance Turkey Trot it's Aubrey, Rebecca, Allison, Suzanne and LoLa... N ot really a report, just wanted to say Happy Thanksgiving!  Everyday something happens in this big world that gives us pause to recognize how thankful we should be.  We live in a beautiful place, surrounded by abundance and healthy enough to run in the Turkey Trot.  Damn, we're lucky!  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... S o, we head down to Manhattan Beach last night for the annual stroll and we take pics of elves and reindeer and ballerinas, thinking that one of them ought to be good enough for the report.  But NOooo!  We're just about to our bikes when we see this fuzzy little number.  At first we thought it was a yak, but on closer inspection it turned out to be a Chewbaccacycle or a Chewbika or a Chew-Wheeler...  Very cool, except for the fact that it was drizzling and the whole thing was drenched and smelled like a wet dog... R ainy this morning with 5 miles visibility and low angry looking clouds.  Winds are steadfastly onshore by 7.2kts and the seas are riled up.  The air temp is 58.5˚ and the water is 63.1˚.  High tide is at 10:16am +5.3' and low tide will follow at 5:45pm +0.3'.  We have a short period (4sec) WSW swell out of 250˚ at 2.6' and it's crumbly, sloppy and not looking deluxe.  Good morning for coffee...  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we

Lost Boys & Co... W e know what you're thinking, "goblin shark," right?  Nope, it's a "Long-Nosed Chimaera."  It's got a whip-like tail and this cone-shaped nose that gives it the appearance of going a hell of a lot faster than it actually does.  Scientists believe these are actually quite common, but since they like to swim between 1,000 and 2,000 meters your chances of getting poked are pretty slim.  Unless, of course, it was an especially egregious wipeout.  All of that is good news!  The bad news is that their dorsal fins have a highly venomous spine!  So, next time you're trolling at 6,000 feet, be careful...   C loudy, gray, with 6.8 miles visibility.  Almost looks like it could rain.  Winds were calm this morning and the sea was oily/glassy.  The air temperature was 57.3˚ and the water was 62.8˚, dropping a bit from yesterday's winds.  High tide was at 9:42am +5.7' and low tide will be at 5:03pm +-0.0'.  We have a west swell

ANOTHER Tequila Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... N ot sure we have to explain, but apparently you can have two Tequila Tuesdays in one week.  It all started with the Professor giving Danger boy a ride home from the Hawthorne version of Earl Scheib, nominally known in Lawndale/Hawthorne as Errol Chaib.  The Professor finding himself out of the bubble, ran out of oxygen and wheezed himself into a hacking, clattering coughing fit.  Upon reaching the Fortress of Danger, Danger Boy allowed that he had just the remedy and produced a brand new bottle of "Chamuca" an especially potent añejo cough suppressant.  Almost miraculously, the Professor's cough disappeared, taking wing like "the buzzard god who copulates in midair with the souls of dying virgins."  Danger Boy offered another dram for good measure and the Professor left healed, sealed and delivered...  Except he couldn't remember what day it was... B eyond the Golden Gate and in the lee of the Marin headlands the Rovens' family pondered the moment after spreading the ashes of Clara Rovens, Doug's mom.  A remarkable woman, the tributes were many and sincere.  Considering how folks move around today, it was incredible that Clara spent the span of her years in one city, San Francisco.  Classy, bright and unflappable, she fits our criteria for a great surf mom.  Our condolences to the Rovens' family...
