Sometimes On Saturday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co...  So what we have here (#1) is your basic duck herder.  We didn't stop to count but there were at least a waddling and more than a flock.  If they'd have been swimming they would have been a raft...  The duck herder was looking pretty sassy as he had all of his ducks in a row... Then we have Christine, LoLa and the Professor (#2) at the palace pool, feeding the carp.  Some BIG fellows that looked like they were more than ancient... We headed to the beach and got some quality lounge and snorkel time... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

St. Rice Paddie's Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Steve Jones and the Professor both discovered they like to get haircuts and shaves in exotic locales.  Here Steve (#1) gets a shave in Sideman, Bali!   Shave and haircut, right around $3.50 US.  Steve looks like he's really getting his money's worth! Looks like a west swell out of 260º at 3'.  The water is up to 58.1º and looks like St. Patrick's Day is turning the corner on winter... And it's a Happy St. Paddies Day from the Balinese rice paddies!  Here we have LoLa checking out a crop just getting ready to mature.  It's got about 2 months until it's ready to harvest. ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... Doing the Lounge Lizard thing in Singapore on the way to Bali.  Morgan, by way of Brendan got into the lounge gig and we've made good use of them for a couple of years now.  Flew over lots of ocean but haven't seen any waves yet.  Still being slightly amazed that this is working at all! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Surf Wisdom Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T he moon peeking through the trees this morning (#1) W ho said,  " T here's something valuable about learning in slow motion.  You have to be really precise.  I think that translates into going faster on bigger waves, a bigger canvas. There's a benefit go the number of rides you get, growing up where there are short-interval waves.  Especially a beachbreak, because it's not just one spot - it breaks anywhere and you learn different angles, and you take notice of little rips and the effect the previous wave had on the wave you' re on.  You find the energy.  You're always looking for a little more pocket of energy or speed, to refine what you're trying to do." Y ep, Kelly Slater said that about growing up in Florida where you might argue has even worse waves than we do.  He took, what seems like a real disadvantage, and turned it into a learning situation.  You gotta imagine Kelly knows what he's talking about.  We can't al

Lost Boys & Co... So as far as writing the first day of March for the Surf & Culture Report, it's kinda writing itself!  It started out rainy and windy and then the rain blew through and left us with a proper gale. Officially March is coming in like a lion!   At checkout this morning it was blowing 30kts from the west with gusts to 40kts!  (Photo #1 gives you a good shot of the beach and the rough surf from the pier to Manhattan.)  Even the surf reporters were calling it "Victory at Sea."   The air temperature was 52.0º and the water is not much better at 55.4º.  The tides are swinging back to a more normal rythmn and high tide is at 5:00am +4.6' and low tide will be at 12:47pm -0.1'.  With all this wind there's a west swell out of 268º at 7.5' and it's blowing up to be between 6' to 10' and out of control! The visibility at one foot above the sand (check photo #2) was less than 10'.  It looked like the Sahara in full blast mode.  D
