I f you hit it this morning you might have been golden!  Cloudy and rain finally fell around 9am.  Winds stayed offshore all morning and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 55.5 and the water is 57.6 winterized degrees.  High tide was at 4:58am +4.7' and low tide follows at 12:26pm +0.0'.  We have a west swell out of 260º at 3.0' and the surf was 3' to 4' with some fun little wet ones... L oLa waiting for everyone to catch up, on her way to about 3,000 vertical feet of downhill.  Her gambit was no nonsense, ski steady and use the hill to her advantage.  The Maharishi, and Buck had some impressive bursts of speed and the Professor carved some fluff, but when you got to the bottom... there she was... O ver the weekend even some of the sea birds were grounded.  This pelican (#2) was hanging out on the pier looking for hand outs.  When you look closely, there are some fabulous colors going on there... U nder pressure (#3).  The aesthetics of sprinkler systems... N o scheduled happy hour this week.  We'll be hieing to the frozen north and doing cold weather research/testing in Montana and the Yellowstone area...  We're out Thursday and back in a week...  If past is prologue

Lost Boys & Co... S o, if you look closely at the first wave of this set, you'll see none other than Socrates Bard making his way down the face (#1).  Saturday dawned bumpy and wild, but Soc, Melissa Mazur and Johnny Juapo made it out and acquitted themselves well with some predominantly left slabs that left most of us on the beach watching... C lear as the proverbial bell this morning with winds out of the north by 9kts.  The sea surface was bumped and uneven and the water temperature is a wind-aided 58.5, while the air is 41.1.  High tide was at 7:46am +6.7' and low tide will be a really low -1.7', attesting to the power of the full moon.  We have a west swell out of 267º at 5.6' and it should clean up nicely later today... O n Sunday, windy was an understatement...  We always like it when the flags fly UP! (#2) L ooking like the Kalahari (#3) not only was the Strand covered this morning, but the winds drove a copious amount of sand down the Pier Plaza and all the

" W est Hollywood is run like a laboratory on a pirate ship." Mayor Pro Tem John D'Amico made that statement this morning while addressing a room full of pirates and citizens from West Hollywood...  well, we applauded...  What a great city slogan though, "West Hollywood: A Laboratory On A Pirate Ship"  We were there with the pirates... I n case you've been out of touch, it's true, Marco (#2) from Porto, Portugal has washed up on our shores and he and his family (Raquel and Mateus) are living with the Professor fo

Lost Boys & Co... ... A nd it's off we go...  We're going to compare some images this morning just for fun.  Because we are hopelessly trapped in the confines of linearity, let's start with #1:  Here we have the camera pic of Hermosa (South) and it's looking pretty zero.  That combined with the caption that says "FLAT" emphasizes the notion... W atching the horizontal, a couple of times we thought we might have seen some lightning flashes.  Could be compromised eyeballs...  Still there was 5 miles visibility and the ceiling was closing in.  Rain starting about 9:30am.  Winds out of the ESE by 10.3kts and the sea surface had a bit of a ripple.  The air temperature was 50.2 and the water is 59.2 and combined with the wind it made things a bit chilly.  Low tide at 10:56am +0.9' and high tide will be at 5:32pm +2.8' as the tides start to swing a bit more radically.  We have a SW swell out of 223º at 2.3' and it was a fun 2' to almost 3' for

Lost Boys & Co... S apphire and Topaz not particularly enjoying the tides this morning (#1), as we get ready for a few days of rain.  Sounds like it will be intermittent, so keep an eye out for a window to jump through... M ostly clear skies this morning with 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3 to 4kts and smooth seas.  The air temperature was 41.1 and the water is 59.2.  Low tide was draining things to the point of wally-crashy at 9:26am +1.5' and high tide was mid-afternoon at 3:19pm +2.6' for not much of a tide change.  We have a WSW swell out of 259º at 3.0' and that made for 3' to 4' slabs that made you pay for the pleasure... C loudy nights add an interesting soft touch to the lights (#2)... O ur team of Happy Hour experts have decided that it's R-10 for this week's Hora de Fiesta.  We'll be gathering at 5:30 if there's no rain...  If there IS rain we'll go inside.  We are that smart... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'

Lost Boys & Co... K inda bumped in Hermosa (#1) this morning after the weather yesterday, but still some good ones on the odd sets. B rilliant, clear blue skies and 20+ miles visibility.Winds were out of the east by 5.6kts and the sea surface had some residual bump from last night's winds.  The air was a chilly 39 and the water was 59.4, but we had a real start when we checked the temps and it came up 6º CELSIUS!  Kinda felt like 6º...Low tide was at 7:44am +1.8' and high tide was at 1:09pm +3.0'.  We have a WSW swell out of 258º at 4.3' and it was 3' to 5' and a couple of surprises every ten minutes or so... " C ada dia é melhor do que o dia anterior"...  Portuguese for "Every day is better than the day before..."  It's the slogan we have adopted for this season.  It is also what a lot of people say just before things go to hell...  We're hoping for different results... A pologies for all of those who have been trying to reach us

Lost Boys & Co... Miloe has a question for those hungry for some warm waves, great food and a break from the usual... Do you think that there are any surfers on your list that would want to go with me to Mexico for a week of surfing May 25 - June 1?  If so would you ask...? Consider yourselves asked... Freeze-ass cold this morning at 41.1 (clarification:  Water freezes at 32f, the average ass freezes at 45f) and the water dipped below 60 to 59.5.  Clear as a bell with 20+ miles visibility and we didn't notice any clouds.  They might have all frozen and fallen to the ground.  High tide was at 10:03am +5.1' and low tide follows at 4:55pm +0.0'.  We have a west swell out of 271º at 3.3' and it was a fun rising tide 3' to 4'...  but it was cold... Okay, photo #1 is what it looked like in Hermosa yesterday...  Photo #2 is Nazaré, Portugal about 8 hours earlier...  Yeah, and that speck on the wave is our friend Hugo Vau, making it look almost reasonable.

T hanks to Reneé Evette our den mother and chronicler of all things Hermosan, for this great shot (#1) of a rainbow exploding beneath a dark sky.  Replete with palm trees and enough blue sky to give one hope for tomorrow...  C hilly this morning with the air temps around 40 and the water 59.7.  Finally below 60!  20+ miles visibility and clear windy skies gusting from 8 to 12 kts and the sea surface was bumped and rough.  High tide was at 9:33am +5.4' and low tide was at 4:28pm -0.3'.  We have a west swell out of 276º at 4.6' and the surf was 3' to 6' and pretty bumpy... T he checkout this morning with Chipper, Jah and Skippy (#2).  The Professor reported that the register of their voices was so high that they were actually conversing with dolphins that circled the pier.  Being that Skippy will be leaving for Las Vegas soon, they have decided to have a group surf mañana to give her a proper send-off.  Southside around 7:30 - 8 and dress appropr

Lost Boys & Co... Cloudy this morning with rain squalls (#1) and plenty of seaweed to make things minestrone.  10 miles visibility with winds variable to 20kts and the sea surface is wind-blown and white-capped.  The air temperature was 48.7 and the water is 60.1, possibly taking a dive with all this wind.  High tide is at 9:01am +5.7' and low tide will be at 4:01pm -0.5'.  We have a bumped up west swell out of 262º at 6.2' and it's 5' to 8' at most spots... Things were a bit downside-up in Boise, this time (#2)...  with muddy skies and a 100% humidity... Getting into Boise is easy...  Getting out, not so much... (#3) It was like this: Underpaid TSA Agent:  Sir, the scanner has shown that you have a hot spot in your groin area... Professor:  Yes, why thank you! TSA:  Uh, well, I have to ask you to stand out of line over here and I'm going to use the back of my hand to examine the area.  Do you have any questions? Professor:  Yes, can she do the examinati

M ostly cloudy this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 8.0kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was a chilly 48.9 and the water is still 60.3.  High tide is at 6:51am +5.6' and low tide follows at 2:08pm -0.6'.  We have a WSW swell out of 254º at 3.3' and it was a legitimate 3' to 4' on a high tide fueled rolling swell...
