Lost Boys & Co... W e know slightly more about football than we do about Lacrosse...  But the Superbowl is always special if for no other reason than the commercials...  So, here's to some great commercials and may the best product win... H ere we have our own personal hero Hugo Vau (#1) on the smallest wave we've ever seen him ride...  The last pic he shared, he was so far back and the wave was so big, that you could barely see him...  Nice to see him smiling and peace back at you brother! T his morning we had 10 miles visibility under hazy skies.  Winds were offshore, but it was still bumpy, like it has been all this week (see #2).  The air temp was 48.8 and the water is 60.3, getting up to 62/63 during the day.  Low tide was at 7:42am +2.2' and high tide follows at 12:53pm +3.1' with not a significant tidal differentiation.  We have a west swell out of 267º at 3.9' and it was 4' to 5' with some head-high outsides... C lear skies this morning and 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 2.2kts, but the sea surface was bumpy, with no apparent wind event last night.  It's supposed to get windy earlier tomorrow.  The air temperature was 52.2 and the water is holding at 60.3.  High tide is at 10:38am +4.9' and low tide will be at 5:35pm +0.1'.  We have a strong swell out of the west 260º at 5.2' and it was 3' to 5', but quick and not too clean... T he original Malecón cruiser(s).  #2 features Ivan Fernandez's dad on the left and his buddy on their Harley's.  This was probably in the late 50's... Lost Boys & Co... O ur heartfelt condolences go out to Kobe Bryant's family and friends...  A tragic loss to the world of sports and entertainment... E ven when it's small it looks like it's got some punch!  Nazaré (#1), with Hugo looking at it because it's too small to ride...  For him... H eavy haze this morning with 3 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 2.9kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was 48.7 and the water is 60.6.  High tide was at 10:05am +5.4' and low tide will be at 5:07pm -0.3'.  We have a west swell out of 260º at 4.3' and it was 3' to 5' with some fat ones on the odd set... Lost Boys & Co... L adies and gentlemen, may we introduce the boys...  (#1)  From L. to R.  "Rasta" Pete Georgianna, John (J.P.) Pesce, Jimmy "Utah" Thomas and Jimmy (Pitcher house) Young.  Right around 200 years of surfing experience.  Not a day goes by in Hermosa when these guys don't have a pulse on the heart of the town...  By the way February is usually the time for Jimmy Young's "Cold Water Classic."  Heats of 15 minutes, no wetsuits allowed... C lear skies and 20+ miles visibility this morning.  Winds were calm and switched early around 9am.  The sea surface was smooth to rippled.  The air temp was 50 and the water is 60.4.  High tide was at 7:46am +6.2' and low tide follows at 3:00pm -1.2'.  There's a west swell out of 265º at 4.6' and it was 3' to 5' breaking pretty close to shore... Lost Boys & Co... K ade Kaufmann (#1) on a sizzler at Hermosa this morning.  The outside were almost twice this big, but that didn't stop the Redondo squad from chasing some barrels... A teachable moment is what we have here in photo #2.  This lad is leading with his arms, projecting himself through this lined up section and building speed for what we hope is a spectacular maneuver... P artly cloudy skies this morning and temperatures in the high 40's on the beach and 60.1 in the water.  That 60 number is pretty impressive for January.  Winds were offshore by 5.4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  High tide was at 7:05am +6.2' and low tide will be at 2:23pm -1.1'.  We have a west swell out of 267º at 4.6' and it was 4' to 8' with some macking sets... T ravis Connell (#3) on this right that was as close as we got to having a "pier nugget" this morning.  This wave was overhead, for sure, but Travis is also 6'4" so he makes it look smal

Lost Boys & Co... A couple of happy boys (#1) taking a break from candy coating those surfboards of which we've become so fond.  Birdie and Oscar (not their real names) embracing the euphoria of the boiled-in-oil dough rings... A nother beautiful South Bay morning (#2) after it rained a bit last night.  Visibility was about 10 miles and partly cloudy skies.  Winds are already onshore by 2.5kts and the sea surface is a bit bumped.  The air was 54.9 and the water is 59.9.  High tide was t 6:23am +6.1' and low tide will be at 1:42pm -0.9'.  There's a west swell out of 260º at 3.3' and it was 3' to 4' with some fat high tide rollers.  Might have been better if the wind had been off... Lost Boys & Co... H ere (#1) we have Dr. Scale's recently repaired wetsuit, with a rather provocative red thread suturing the slice.  The Professor usually uses black thread with additional glue on the stitch, but the red looked so good... 5 Miles visibility under cloudy skies and looked remotely like rain all day.  Winds were on from the get-go and no matter what we couldn't make it look good enough to go out.  The air temperature was 54.0 and the water is still 59.7 no matter what we try to do.  High tide at 5:37am +5.8' and low tide was at 12:58 -0.5.  We have a flimsy west swell out of the west 260º at 3.3' and it was half that and high tide, so check it out early and we'll let you know what we think is happening early... F riday at Hermosa Pier (#2), dawned pink and offshore, with some shoulder high waves and just a bit lined up with the tide.  Better tides this week and let's see if the swell helps us out... Three Dimensional Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... D espite the gray, we experienced most of the day in the traditional three-dimensions.  Looking down the beach (#1) you can see that we had a little less than a mile visibility and cloudy skies.  A bit of rain is forecast for the evening, late, and it should break up early in the morning.  Offshore winds this morning by 6kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 48.9 and the water is 59.9.  Low tide was at 6:25am +2.1' and high tide follows at 1:25pm +4.0'.  There a swell out of 225º SW at 2.6' and it was 2' and pretty lined up with the low tide... J etski sighting (#2).  He came out for a brief moment for some air and retreated back into his lair to continue recuperating...  Everyone who has gotten this latest strain of the lurkus, says it's the worst ever.  Before your through you face the specter of creeping skin, the chilblains, hacking cough and if you're not lucky, pneumonia.  We are told the flu shot works perfectly half

It's A Win On Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... I t's been kinda like #'s 1 & 2 all week long.  A bit walled up on the lower half of the tide and then a bit peakier at the top half.  Also we've had that hazy sun with about 10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3.3kts and the sea surface is smooth.  Air and water temps are holding at 45 for the air and 59.7 for the water.  Low tide was at 6:25am +2.1' and high tide is at 12:10pm +4.8'.  We have a WSW swell out of 241º at 3.0' and it was 3' to 5' with a lot of close-outs and zippers across the playing field... A nd the field was crowded this morning with Redondo High surfing against the combined squads of South and West high schools.  Sporting one of the deepest teams we've seen in recent history, Redondo won 94 to 53.  There were some outstanding performances with 1st's by Kade Kauffman, Matt Pogue, Kierra Fedio, Kevin Elliott, Deborah Mendiha, Ben Oien and Jonathan Fox.  A really fun team to watch, we'll le

Lost Boys & Co... " I felt a tug on my line and you wouldn't believe what happened next..." (#1)  We thought we had seen some big mantas in Mexico (like dinner table size) but this one is amazing... C hecking out the quad-fins on this truck (#2).  We're guessing Ed could have broken one of them off with no problem... A nother beautiful morning with 10 miles visibility and a few high clouds.  Winds were light offshore by 3.2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a chilly 45.2 and the water is holding at 59.7.  Low tide early at 5:12am +2.1' and high tide was at 11:11am +5.6'.  There is a west swell out of 264º at 3.3' and it was 3' to 4' with the occasional five footer.  Tides were a bit too low initially, but got better as the morning progressed.  Next week the tides should be more favorable and the surf and winds should be consistent... C larke got this shot of the Professor (#3) shuffling off toward the pier.  We've had a run o

Special Ed-dition Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I n the long tradition of James Campbell, Danger Boy and all of the others who have risked life and limb, we have our own Ed "Doc" Scale (1).  You will note Doc's heavily bandaged right calf.  After a trip over the falls, his board caught up with him and proceeded to plant the fin deep into his leg.  Initially, he seemed more concerned about his new wetsuit (totally understandable) then the reality of the situation sank in (so to speak.)  The fin hit him hard enough to break out of the fin box and leave the screw...  Ouch... #2   Lounging at Little Company...  His wife Rita came to pick him up and announced that this "hadn't been on her schedule."  Bacallao responded that "that's kind of funny because I penciled it in yesterday."  People, let's communicate here... I n the midst of all this drama, the surf was pretty good.  Winds were out of the east by 3.3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  It was a bit chilly with th

Once Upon A Full Moon Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I t's a full moon Friday and it was shining in it's full glory this morning as it plummeted into the Pacific (#1).  We're always surprised when people look shocked that the moon and the sun are in the sky at the same time.  People, LOOK UP! N ow of course, if you look to the east, the sun is coming up (#2) and our dedicated surf heroes are getting into their wetsuits to meet the day...  If you were there you'd know that the air temp was 43.0 and the water is 59.9.  Kinda chilly.  Clear skies with some high clouds and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3.4kts, which drove the ambient temps down a bit, but the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  High tide was at 8:09am +6.6' and low tide followed at 3:28pm -1.4'.  We had a 3.9' swell out of 267º west and it was a rocking 4' to 6' and there were some good ones if you were careful... T he tide was washing over the rocks (#3), but there's always hope as you're making

Elvis Is 85 Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Y es, Elvis (#1) would have been 85 today.  Or he IS 85 depending on your opinions regarding his demise or lack of it.  We're hoping you had a good day, mostly because no one works on Elvis' birthday...  Right?  It's in our contract... C ool this morning, at 48.0º and 60.1 in the water, although the Hermosa Guards had it at 58.  Partly cloudy skies and 10+ miles visibility and the winds were light offshore at 5kts.  High tide was at 6:53am +6.1' and low tide will be at 2:14pm -0.8'.  Big tidal swings with an 8' foot differentiation on the full moon on Friday.  There's a west swell out of 268º at 4.3' and it was 4' to 5' with some overhead outsides.  Best at high tide, there were some wind swell peaks up and down the beach.  #2 is an RUHS charger leaning through a little wedge... S unrises this week have been gorgeous!  This morning (#3) was no exception as we waited for it to get light enough to venture into the water... N o

A clear beautiful morning with over 10 miles visibility and a few high clouds.  Winds were offshore by 7.2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 52.2 and the water is 60.3.  High tide was at 6:16am +5.7' and low tide was at 1:39pm -0.3'.  We have a west swell out of 267º at 2.3' and it was better the closer you hit it to high tide.  About 3' to 4' and some fast wally waves...  Tarsan was in fine form and got the dump for his rail-grabbing virtuosity... R oessler plunge (#1) always seemed to be such an anachronism, both because it seemed to be from another era and here was this crystal blue plunge next to the gray-blue Pacific...  Come on in, the water's fine... Lost Boys & Co... W ho dat? (#1)  Merely the triumphant return of Jimmy Utah.  Checking it out this morning and providing wave, tide and weather information.  Nothing happens in Hermosa between 5am and 10 am that Jimmy doesn't know about it, nothing... A beautiful morning with 15 miles visibility under mostly clear skies.  Winds were winter typical offshore by 6.3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a chilly 45º and the water is 59.4.  High tide was at 5:42am +5.4' and low tide will be at 1:02pm +0.3', getting ready for some big tidal shifts with the full moon on Friday.  We have a west swell out of 266º at 3.6' and it was 3' to 5'... T aking a look at Rat (#2) yesterday.  With some low tides on the boards for this week, it might be a good spot to check when it's dredging...  It's also a bit protected from the wind when there's a lot of south in it...
