On The Fringe Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... L ook, we don't care if Nanny is working the pedals...  NO ONE under two should be driving a Land Rover!  Now Toyotas and Nissans are different, we even had NaNa the surfing coyote driving the X-Terrible.  And Luke Maggio was 12 and he drove it all over PV looking for CarveBoard™ hills.  But most importantly if you insist on driving - wait until your mother is in the car!... U nder cloudy, at times, rainy skies we have 3 miles visibility and a persistent, undeniable humidity.  Winds were offshore and variable all morning up to about 4kts and the sea surface was smooth to bumpy as the fronts bumped through.  The air temp was 61.3° and the water was 63.1°.  High tide was at 9:08am +3.9' and low tide will be at 4:29pm -0.2'.  We have a west swell out of 263° at 5.9' and we're calling it 3' to 5'.  Not as big as yesterday, but some nice ones just the same... Lost Boys & Co... B ig time Metapan fans...  Getting harder to tell the gringos from the locals all the time... R egardless of the hyped reports of the impending storm, it IS starting to look a bit dark and threatening.  Cloudy skies and 7.5miles visibility.  Winds were calm at checkout and the sea surface was glassy.  The air temperature was 59.0° and the water was 62.4°.  High tide was at 8:08am +6.1' and low tide will be at 3:22pm -0.4'.  We have an almost indecipherable swell out of the SW at 223° reading 1.6' and dropping .  The surf is less than a foot, but predicted to rise as the weather pushes in and things get wet and presumably wild...  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... B ig Wave Dave sent this pic in of the one that got away in El Porto... U nder a hazy sun we have 10 miles visibility and some clouds in the west.  Winds blustery on-shore 8 to 12kts and the sea surface is choppy.  The air temperature is 57.7° and the water is holding nicely at 63.1°.  Some significant tidal swinging with high tide at 7:40am +6.1' and low tide at 2:50pm -0.3'.  We currently have a WSW swell out of 250° at 2.3'.  It's sloshing up on shore at about 1' to 2' and everything is generally looking windy, cold and a little too small.  Everyone keeps saying mañana, but it looks more like Thursday... T hey call it a Mohawk, but it looks better on a warthog.  Wait, maybe we'll start calling it a warthog...  The haircut that is... the animal already is a warthog...  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

M eanwhile we went out for coffee in Eagle, Idaho this morning and had to avoid, not only the morning traffic going to work, but the occasional tumbleweed blowing down the main drag at about 25 mph.  Interesting mixture here of rural and urban landscape.  Strip malls with small farms in between.  Brings bac

Lost Boys & Co.. . F rom Tyrone James... Hi Frank, Check out this picture Luke sent me from Espinho, Portugal.  He's been visiting Marco and surfing around Porto.  Luke is in love with Portugal.  He tells me that he could easily live there!  With waves like that, who couldn't!   (We can't think of anyone...  even the water wasn't that cold last time we were there!   Ed.) I t's STILL flat, however, we shall persist.  Trying to rain under cloudy skies and 7.5 miles visibility.  Winds were slightly offshore by 1.9 kts and the sea surface was anywhere from glassy to smooth to pool table.  The air temp and the water temp were 59.7° and that's the first time, in a long time that that has happened.  High tide will be at 10:01am +6.7' and low tide will follow at 5:21pm -1.0'.  The buoy is reading a SW swell out of 227° at 1.6'.  Take all those factors and parse them out and it equals, flat. Lost Boys & Co... N ew to the list today is Phil Oglesby, who was part of the crew who went to El Salvador.  You might remember that Phil was the one who threw his board under the wheels of a runaway 747 filled with orphans to bring it to a spectacular stop.  Our photo features him on top of his favorite mount "Milagro."  He rode it to the soccer game rather than ride the bus.  If it's a fast horse, it's Milagro... L ots of visibility this morning, in the 20+ mile range, with partly cloudy skies.  Winds were offshore by 4.6kts at checkout and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 56.0° and the water was 58.8°.  High tide was just that at 8:29am 7.2' and low tide will be at 3:37pm -1.4', for an 8.6' tidal differentiation.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 267° at 1.6' and it's about half that big when it gets to the beach.  There is some rain on the way, so maybe the surf will follow the rainy weather...  ✠ &q

Lost Boys & Co... O ur photos today are cataloged under the general heading, " Paying to Play ."  In the case of Photo #1 we have Jen Doyle and Katie Parkinson smiling over the remains of Jen's board.  As fate would have it, Katie needed a long board for the semi-finals and the always helpful Jen volunteered her ride.  Everything was going great until Katie caught the final wave of the heat and got unceremoniously dumped on the sand.  She was okay, the board... uh, not so good.   A marvelously clear day under cloudless skies and unlimited visibility.  Winds were offshore in the am by 5.6kts and the sea surface was glassy.   The air temperature was 46.1° and the water, after all that wind over the weekend was down to 58.5° at the buoy ( where did you put those booties??? )  High tide was at 7:09am +6.7' and low tide will drain it out at 2:04pm -0.8' for a week of minus tides.  We have a SSW swell out of 192° at 2.0' and dropping.  We're calling it

Lost Boys & Co... W e're nothing if we're not about capturing first-time events.  Here we have a shot of Oscar Barahona, taking his first ever SUP ride.  Looks like he's been doing it forevers.  In fact it was hard to believe he had never paddled before.  He swears it was his first go.  Then we have the almost professional quality Danger Boy.  He had actually been on it for a couple of days before Oscar got there.  He was rather ecstatic about the whole thing, as you can see.  We're not SUP devotees, but we could see the utility here on the lake.  A good way to get around and way back into some of the backwaters along the typically impenetrable weeds and hyacinths.  That also reminds us that we need to get a water camera to take back into some of those areas.  You can paddle so far into the trees and inlets that it looks like a National Geographic special.  One morning LoLa and the Professor paddled up to a Night Heron rookery, a large mangrove tree teeming with b

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have a photo taken by the noted anthropologist LoLa Carlisle Paine.  She has captured a group of revelers, who are in the process of taking part in a fiesta that started at roughly ten in the morning and went until the sun sizzled into the lake.  We were ferried to Guatemala (entering the country illegally, technically speaking) and began drinking the moment our jungle cruiser hit the dock.  Our host, the pistol packing (okay, it was a Glock, but he had it painted flat-silver) Nathan, kept the Gallo's coming all day long (we didn't drink all day since we didn't start until 10am.)  It was a 10 course meal that included a chicken starter (shown,) shrimp soup, beef, carnitas, salad, 3 varieties of tortillas and his special Guatemalan stew with pork.  To say a good time was had by all would be an understatement of classic proportion.  Note:  Somewhere between the soup and beef, we noticed LoLa wasn't at the table.  We strolled around the gro

C lear skies this morning and 20 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 1.9kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The ambient air temperature was 65.7° and the water was 62.6°.  Low tide was at 8:37am +3.3' and High tide was at 1:47pm +4.1'.  We have a west swell out of 260° at 2.3' and we're calling it 1' to 2' and poor to worse.
