New Moon Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... S o, there were some pretty awesome waves ridden over the last week, but one of the most gnarly was this right-hander that Kyle Beatty skipped into on Tuesday.  We say skipped, because about halfway down he got some air, reconnected then got pitted until it blew him off his ride.  We asked him how that went.  "I went into a full fetal position and hit the sand, but not on anything that mattered (like his neck).  Then I got rag-dolled for the longest time.  When I came up I was rattled, but I paddled back out because it was the last wave of the set and I had an opening."  He was out there with brother Connor, Alex Gray, Scotty Bredesen and Trevor LaShure.  Pretty heavy company we'd say... C lear, cold skies and 15 miles visibility this morning.  Winds were off early by 5.5kts and the sea surface was smooth until about 10am when it turned on.  The sea surface was smooth.  Cool temps all around with the air 44.4 and the water at 58.3.  High tide was a

Lost Boys & Co... O ne place that always guarantees to raise a crowd is the Breakwall on a big swell... C lear skies this morning and 15 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore, carrying the aroma of frying bacon all the way out to the lineup at 6.0kts.  Despite the bacon the sea surface remained smooth...  The air was an unecessarily brisk 43.9 and the water tried to help out at 58.3.  For comparison Boston was 51...  High tide was at 7:46am +5.9' and low tide will follow at 2:53pm -0.8'.  We have a WSW swell out of 258º at 3.3'.  It was a steady 4' with some bigger outsides... S o for every person in the water there were ten watching.  That puts the crowd at about 50 or 60... (not that anyone gives a shit about crowd size...)  Matt Parker was all alone on this one. ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... W e discovered too late that we mis-numbered our pics in the last surf report.  #3 should be #1, #1 should be #2 and #2 should be #3.  In doing this we are aware that this really makes it more complicated than just being wrong in the first place. T oday's #1 is Matt Parker.  You might remember Matt from the early days of the surf league at Bishop Montgomery.  He has turned into a seasoned big wave charger and is regularly on the short list for biggest waves ridden in the South Bay.  Professionally, he raises mushrooms for the restaurant trade.  His company is called "Shiitake Happens."  No shiitake... M ostly clear this morning with 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 5.5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was still chilly at 41.5 and the water is back to 58.3.  High tide is at 7:13am +5.7' and low tide was at 2:23pm -0.6'.  We had a greatly diminished swell at 5.9' from 272º west, but there were still some nice stack

Lost Boys & Co... L ooking big and hollow this morning!  #1 Is the Redondo Breakwall.  This is one of the Lursen crew.  He got barreled, then tried to backdoor the next section and got extruded out of the front of the whitewater.  Brought the crowd to it's feet though... M ostly sunny this morning with 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 7.3kts and the sea surface was rolling smooth with 10 to 15 second intervals.  The air was a crisp 39.8 and the water was 57.6.  Considering the windchill, it was freeze-ass cold.  High tide was at 6:39am +5.5' and low tide will be at 1:53pm -0.3'.  This is the fun part:  We have a 9.8' swell out of the WSW 252º and depending on your window it's 8' to 10' or 12' to 15'.  Some big rideable waves and if your paddling's up to speed, you just might make it out there.  Should calm down a bit for tomorrow... #2 is Jamie Meistrell grinding off the bottom of this backhander.  He took the drop late and ha

Lost Boys & Co... Y ou think the weather's crazy here in the South Bay?  You should try Big Bear...  #1 is halfway down the backside on Friday after they closed highway 18.  By the time we got to Apple Valley all the phones went crazy with alarms.  No, not Amber Alerts, but flash flood alerts.  Apple Valley looked like Apple Lake...  Trigger was on a raft... C loudy, with intermittent rain throughout the day.  5 to 10 miles visibility depending...  Winds are heavy on from 18 to 25kts and the sea surface is rugged.  The air temperature is 52.7 and the water is 58.5.  High tide was at 6:04am +5.2' and low tide will be at 1:21pm +0.1'.  We have a 9.2' swell out of the west 260º.  It's 6' to 8' but highly irregular and often intense...  Investigate coffee... #2  Manhattan Pier yesterday about 8:30am.  The wind was howling offshore at 15 to 20kts and it looks fabulous for about an hour until it did a 180 and blew the surf up, then down, then out... Lost Boys & Co... I t's breaking out far enough to wait for the right wave to bring you in...  Bigger than it looks, this one is about head high... C loudy with rain off and on during the day.  5 miles visibility variable as the rains pass through.  Winds were blustering on shore from 5.5 to 15kts and the sea surface was choppy.  The air temp was 54.3 and the water temp was 59.0.  High tide was at 7:46am +5.9' and low tide follows at 3:33pm -1.6'.  Full moon this evening to boost the tides on both ends.  We have a west swell out of 272º at 5.2' and it's 4' to 7' at most spots... T he chaos of white water begins to take on some interesting patterns... S ometimes, you just have to wonder exactly how secure the Hermosa Jail really is... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Wetable Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H ow many of you remember the Bing Surf Shop on PCH almost to Artesia Blvd?  Well, if you remember that, chances are you remember when Hope Chapel was a bowling alley and there was an Orange Julius® down the block from Bing...  The board the kid is showing off is a Nuuhiwa Noserider, one of the last big innovations before the short board era... I t is a wetable Wednesday and if it's not wet then it wasn't outside.  Breaking up mid-morning with 10 miles visibility and cloudy skies.  Winds are strong out of the west from 15 to 22kts and the sea surface is choppy and windblown.  The air temperature is 57.7 and the water is up a click to 59.2 (thank you Pineapple Express!)  High tide is at 7:43am +6.9' and low tide will be at 2:51pm -1.6'.  We have a rolling west swell out of 265º at 4.3' and it's 4' to 5' and poor shape.  We'll wait for the wind to ease up a bit... A Tangerine Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... N ext time you're in Tangiers, have a tangerine.  They're named after Tangiers... C loudy and some unexpected rain early this morning.  Visibility is 2 miles and according to our predictors, the weather should stay wet and measurably below wild.  Winds are variable, predominantly out of the west to 6kts and the sea surface is bumped.  The air temperature is 54.3 and the water is holding at 58.8.  High tide was at 6:58am +6.7' and low tide will be at 2:07pm -1.4'.  We have a west swell out of 261º at 3' and that's making it 2' to 3' with some poor to fair shaped waves...  As soon as these fronts stop marching through we might get some more consistent waves... O ur own Joey Anderson graduated at the end of the Fall Semester and there was a really fabulous art/music/gastronomical event at the Casa Anderson in the Palos Verdes Alps.  Joey and Suzi cooked most of the food with the help of Peruvian cuisine expert Mencha and the specialty

Mach 3 Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W e have no idea, why Austrian physicist Ernst Mach decided in 1937, that it would be a good idea to represent the ratio of the speed of a body, to the speed of sound.  But that being the case we decided that we should change the speedometer on the bus to reflect that more scientific measurement of speed.  So, on our own version of a test flight, we got "Scooter Boy" up to Mach .091.  This historic run was measured about mid-way down 190th St. hill with an offshore wind that most certainly will call the results into question... R ain early on in the morning with the gray hanging on.  3 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 5.3kts and the sea surface is smooth, with it's own gray/green calmness.  The air temperature was 55.4 and the water is 58.5, but no one thinks it's that warm.  High tide is at 6:12am +6.4' and low tide will be at 1:23pm -0.9'.  Th full moon is Thursday, setting up a week of minus tides and we have a Friday the 13th

Sky Won't Rain And The Sun Won't Shine Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... S o let's discuss hubris, or what we might like to call "overweening pride."  Photo #1 is the Grand Plaza in the middle of Mach Picchu.  Now if you look closely you can see a rectangle of lawn with a long narrow stone running from east to west.  Until very recently (like a few years ago) there stood a stele or monument that had been there for about a thousand years, give or take a decade.  But it turns out that the Spanish Ambassador wanted to visit the ruins and they needed a convenient spot to land his helicopter.  Right...  After hundreds of years of fucking over the Inca's they decided that they needed to land RIGHT THERE!  Maybe the most amazing part is that the Peruvians took it down!  Okay, we would've told the Spanish ambassador where he could put the stele... G ray and cloudy skies with rain predicted around 4 pm.  7 miles visibility at checkout.  Winds were light offshore variable to 1.7kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air t

Lost Boys & Co... W e're thinking that now it's the New Year and it's time to toughen up our mental game...  As for LoLa, she's been working out on her upper body and when we needed someone to open this stone doorway, she was the first to volunteer... 10 miles visibility this morning and cloudy skies.  Winds were offshore variable up to 3.2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 50.1 and the water is 58.6.  Low tide will be at 6:02am +2.5' and high tide will also be in the am at 11:46am +4.6'.  We have a decreasing swell from the west 264º at 2.0' and it's 1' and poor at most spots... W hen you're the Inca ruler things go pretty much how you want them to...  Like when he decided this would be a good place for a throne to catch some rays, he said, "Hey guys, I'd like a throne right here for sunning in the afternoon."  They said, "Yes sir, but there's a rock right there."  He said, "Yeah, I

C loudy with 5 miles visibility and it looks like rain although nothing has come down most of the day.  Winds were out of the SSE all morning variable to 6kts and the sea surface was rippled.  The air was a chilly 51.5 and the water is 58.3.  High tide was at 10:55am +5.1' and low tide will be at 6:12pm 0.0'.  We have a west swell out of 260º at 3.3' and it was 2' to 3' and best early and maybe when the tide goes down... S o, you gotta know that the whole Inca Trail is not straight up or straight down, but there are some spots that will give you a run for your money (or monkey).  Like the "Monkey Steps" (#2), so named for the manner in which you ascend them, like a monkey.  They are also known as the "Gringo Killers," although we saw no empirical evidence to suggest any veracity of that cla

Lost Boys & Co... W ell despite everything to the contrary 2017 arrived on time, just as scheduled. P hoto #1 is some of the native flora in Boise covered with snow.  We have no idea what kind of berries these are, other than the fact that we know they're not cherries.  Interesting patterns and an example of chaos theory in all it's glory... S urf today was floating on the high tide.  The wind stayed off all of the morning, so if you could wait until 11:00 you had a chance of catching some 2 to 3 footers.  A complete report will be out tomorrow with tides and all the relevant numbers... #2 is a classic example of what passes for sunning in Idaho during the winter.  Now it's true that when the snow stops falling the sun can be bright and beautiful (see #4) but just as often it's cloudy and gloomy.  You can see how much snow fell the night before by checking out the hydrant.  This is a fail when it comes to tanning... #3 is just about as far as the Professor got be
