Sky Won't Rain And The Sun Won't Shine Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

So let's discuss hubris, or what we might like to call "overweening pride."  Photo #1 is the Grand Plaza in the middle of Mach Picchu.  Now if you look closely you can see a rectangle of lawn with a long narrow stone running from east to west.  Until very recently (like a few years ago) there stood a stele or monument that had been there for about a thousand years, give or take a decade.  But it turns out that the Spanish Ambassador wanted to visit the ruins and they needed a convenient spot to land his helicopter.  Right...  After hundreds of years of fucking over the Inca's they decided that they needed to land RIGHT THERE!  Maybe the most amazing part is that the Peruvians took it down!  Okay, we would've told the Spanish ambassador where he could put the stele...

Gray and cloudy skies with rain predicted around 4 pm.  7 miles visibility at checkout.  Winds were light offshore variable to 1.7kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 48.0 and the water is 58.6.  Low tide is at 7:28am +2.4' and high tide will be at 12:54pm +4.0'.  We have a SW swell out of 226º at 1.3'.  If there was surf it would be half of that...  Look for rain tonight...

In #2 we have the remains of the stone posts where they anchored the roofs and set the thatched coverings.  It would have been great to see how these things looked with thatched roofs in place and painted buildings...  It's overwhelming to imagine how they cut the stones and placed them in the walls.  This isn't even a good example of some of the stone work...

Here in #3 we have a sun dial.  The stone is cut and placed at the right angles so that you can tell exactly what time it is, the cardinal points and if you're good, what time of year it is.
