Tan Tan, Tiznit & Tata Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have a panorama of the Medina in Marrakech.  All of those tents are absent until 4 o'clock in the afternoon.  At that time the vendors enter the Djemaa el-Fna and start setting up shop.  Within an hour they're cooking, serving and hawking their wares.  This was the low-tide catch that we had at Restaurant #1. O n a day when the USA loses and advances and the Portagees win and don't advance, we have overcast skies and 10 miles visibility.  There is no place to park in Hermosa.  You'd think there was a hockey game...  Winds were calm to 2.3kts out of the SSE and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 64.6˚ and the water was 69.4˚, but will be 70 before you can get to the beach.  High tide was at 10:24am +3.9' and low tide will follow at 3:06pm +2.1'.  We have a SSW swell out of 203˚ at 3.3' and the surf is a fun 3' to 4' until the tide gets too full... A s usual Danger Boy and the Professor are out there, one tryin

Lost Boys & Co... S o you wander down these alleyways in Marrakech and you halfway expect Jesus and the apostles to come walking around the corner.  It's like nothing much has changed in one or two thousand years.  You turn down this corridor and it's rug merchants for blocks.  Almost no one leaves this area without a rug.  On the way back a week later, the agents at Ryanair were stuffing their tills with the cash from the extra baggage.  The Professor offered to let his rug (a fine example of the Berber Blue people at the base of the Atlas mountains) be used as a runner down the aisle-way.  "Thank you!  But that will be 25 euro!" O vercast this morning, breaking into some partly cloudy skies and quite delightful.  Winds were from the south at 2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 64.5˚ and the water is 69.3˚ at the buoy and posted 71˚ at the Hermosa Pier.  High tide was at 9:46am +3.8' and low tide will be at 2:29pm +2.0'.  We ha

Stuffed Trout Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W e had stuffed trout at Beelman's Pub downtown LA last Wednesday with Mike Leko and we're still thinking about it...  Not to mention the chicken liver sandwiches...  Field trip sometime this summer! O vercast this morning with 7 miles visibility.  Winds out of the SSW at 3kts and the sea surface had a slight chop.  The air temp was 64.1˚ and the water is a delightful 69.4˚.  High tide was at 9:04am +3.7' and low tide will be at 1:49pm +1.9'.  We have a 3.3' swell out of the SSW at 205˚ and it's a high tide 3', with just a bit of a bump... S orry about the fuzzy photo here in the market in Essoueira.  The veggies all jumped at once.  Sometimes we think we get all the good stuff up here, but we've seen some of the best produce ever on the road (for instance Zihaut, the mercado in Puerto Escondido and here in Morocco.)  Great seafood as well...  Lost Boys & Co... S o, there you are in a foreign country and suddenly something catches your eye.  All at once familiar, but somehow out of place.  This was the Explora shop in Essoueira, Morocco.  Wetsuits, boards for rent and clothes.  Kinda funny to see Body Glove™ so far away from home... C an we just start summer now and not wait for the 21st?  Thank you.  20 miles visibility and clear skies.  Winds were soft out of the NNW by 2 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 62.3˚ and the water was quite nice at 67.6˚.  Low tide was at 9:22am +0.4' and high tide will follow at 4:17pm +5.0'.  We have a SSW swell out of 205˚ at 2.3' and it was just about that for a nice small day.  We took out Randy and Matt for one of their first lessons and they both did a great job!  Watch for them in the lineup this winter when it gets big! T he girls in the foreground were from Australia.  They were on a surf trip to Morocco for their six week holiday.  The girls

Lost Boys & Co... W e're cruisin' through the kasbah in Marrakech and this robed woman with dazzling green eyes, walks up and leads us over to this stall where the black turbaned "Aziz" is drumming.  She says, in flawless English, that he needs accompaniment on the oud.  The oud is a five stringed instrument that they often play in open tuning, playing rhythm with the tambour.  You know how many Dirhams you can make in a couple of hours?  So the Professor and Aziz belt out more than a few classics and before you know it, it's time for some mint tea... L ooking more like summer every day!  15 miles visibility and partly cloudy skies turning sunny before the noon hour.  Winds were variable to 2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 61.3˚ and the water was a delightful short-suit friendly 66.9˚.  Low tide was at 8:25am -0.1' and high tide will be at 3:18pm +4.4'.  We have a WSW swell out of 247˚ at 3.0' and that was about it, a

Lost Boys & Co... O k, so you're 7,000 or so miles from home and you're hanging out in the Temple Bar district and you're just kinda cruising on a Sunday night and who do you run into?  Well, another Lost Boy.  Mark Comon was taking his photography class on a field trip to Dublin and we caught him working on lighting night shots and working with shadows for max effect.  Yeah, yeah, we could use a class, but we'd have to cut out the ukelele lessons... L ookin' almost like summer this morning with 15 miles visibility under mostly sunny skies.  Winds were variable, mostly offshore to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 62.3˚ and the water was a very accommodating 67.6˚.  Low tide was at 7:32am -0.6' and high tide will be at 2:18pm +4.5'.  We have a WSW swell out of 253˚ at 3.2' and it's making some nice 3' to 4' waves.  Could be a similar set-up mañana, so wax up and get out of the rack on time... Lost Boys & Co... T he Hermosa Pier Promenade was crowded with the eager and curious as the USA took off to an early lead over Ghana in the World Cup.  We must admit that we didn't see anyone as eager and curious as Tio Clark!  No question about his support for the red, white and blue.  It must have been effective, since after the Ghanians tied things at 1 to 1, the US came back to finish the match 2 to 1. A bit of a westerly swell this morning with partly cloudy skies and 10 to 12 miles visibility.  Winds started out onshore, variable to 3kts and the sea surface had a light chop.  The air temperature was 59.5˚ and the water was 66.7˚ at the buoy and a posted 69˚ at the Hermosa Pier.  Low tide was at 6:42am -1.0' and high tide was at 1:21pm +4.4'.  We have a WSW swell out of 255˚ at 3.0' and it was an honest 3' with some outside fatties...  Maybe more mañana...  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Full-Moon Friday The 13th Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... N ow how often do you have a full-moon AND a Friday the 13th?  Hmmm, we don't know either, but probably not very often... I n Ireland the way they banish demons during a full-moon or a Friday the 13th is to go to the pub.  Here we have two excellent examples of pub-bage.  Bittles, on this corner that resembles the set up for the Flatiron building in New York and the Temple Bar which is either named after the district or visa-versa... P artly cloudy this morning with 12 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the SW at 4.1kts and the sea surface had a heavy ripple/light chop going.  The air temp was 62.3˚ and the water seemed warmer than the advertised 63.9˚.  High tide was at 10:50am +4.1' and low tide will follow at 3:40pm +1.8'.  We have a SSW swell out of 198˚ at 2.6' and that translates into about 2' and a bit weak on the rising tide... Lost Boys & Co... W e're going to start off with Irish cuisine today.  Breakfast food to begin with.  Here are The Professor, Joey and Suzanne preparing for the assault on the full-Irish.  That being:  Blood pudding, sausage, bacon, egg, beans and potatoes.  Since you don't wanna have the same thing two days running, the Professor ordered this breakfast featuring a puff pastry as big as your head covering some cheesy bits, meat and eggs... C loudy this morning, breaking up early with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the NNW by 3.3kts and the sea surface was a bit rippled.  The air temperature was 64.1˚ and the water is 64.2˚ at the buoy.  High tide was at 9:20am +3.8' and low tide will be at 2:11pm +1.7'.  Some fat evening tides coming up with the full moon the next couple of days in the 6.7' range.  Tie your boat to something high and sturdy.  We have a SSW swell out of 205˚ at 1.6' and it's 1' to 2' and building!  Check it early-ish

Temple Bar Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... S o, we are late returned from the Emerald Isle, by way of Morocco and are ready to share some pics and stories from the journey...  But first how's the surf here...? I t's overcast this morning with 5 miles visibility.  We have winds variable to 3kts, primarily out of the SSW.  The sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature is 62.2˚ and the water is 66.8˚.  High tide was at 8:34am +3.7' and low tide will be at 1:29pm +1.7'.  We have a SSW swell out of 201˚ at 1.6' and it's 1' to 2' and needs a lot of help... Y ou might recall that for many years the Irish experienced what they termed "the Troubles."  Two areas in Belfast, Northern Ireland were lightning rods for each side:  For the Catholics, Shankill Road.  And for the Protestants, Sandy Row on Falls Road.  Of course, where would we go to look for answers?  Right, Shankill Road and Falls Road.  Right off the bat we couldn't find anyone to give us a tour of Sandy R
