A Bit Of A Warble Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S ome days the conditions don't make a lot of sense.  Like this morning.  There was 10 miles visibility and wispy cirrus clouds.  Winds were offshore by 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was rolling with some odd surface currents.  The air temperature was 51.0º and the water was a full 10º warmer at 61.0º.  Low tide was early at 6:29am +2.0' and high tide will be at 11:51am +3.5'.  So it's a WSW swell out of 247º at 3.6', but it was 4' to 6' and turning inside-out on the new sand bars that have been forming.  The conveyor belt on the south side of the pier has been eradicated and if you tried to paddle out there you found yourself being sucked through the pier and deposited on the north side.  Our photograph shows a distinct warble, but really doesn't show how big some of the outside sets were... Lost Boys & Co... W hen somebody tells you that the surf was "mellow" you can call up this photo (#1) of Steve Denis on a "mellow" day over the last week to describe just how "mellow" it's been.  His broken board attests to the "mellowness." V isibility was about 15 miles this morning and the skies were partly cloudy.  Winds were offshore from 3 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was 52.0º and the water is 60.8º.  Low tide was early at 5:30am +2.0' and high tide will be at 11:10am +4.2'.  It's a WSW swell out of 257º at 3.6', but as you know, everything is not as it seems.  It was 4' to 5' with some fat sets and even though Aaron got a gaping tube most of the action was closed out and pounding.  Calling for some weather for the end of the week, but we'll let you know how it looks mañana... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... W hen those Redondo surfers are charging it's hard to stop them (#1).  Peninsula couldn't and there was some fine surfing on both sides!  It was RUHS 92 and PEN 46. 10 miles visibility under partly cloudy skies.  Winds were offshore at 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a bracing 48.9º and the water is holding at 60.1º.  High tide was at 9:00am +5.9' and low tide follows at 4:10pm -0.7'.  Reading a 3.9' west swell out of 261º, but contrary to the numbers it was an easy 4' to 6' with some bigger outsides!. ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... Y ou know how you take off on a wave and you wonder, "What the hell is going on behind me?"  Maybe it's the noise?  Maybe a shadow?  So, Jah Morgan turned around and looked (#1) and much to her surprise the left she had taken off on had morphed into a double overhead zipper leaving 10th St. in a hurry.  Jah, Anna and Christian got some good ones and earlier Laurie and Milly we're paddling into some nice ones. A ll of this as the day began to clear up.  It started out rainy and drizzly and then slowly came around to a partly cloudy morning with a rather brilliant sun coming through.  Winds were calm in the morning and the air was 57.3º and the water is 60.6º.  High tide was at 8:27am +6.1' and low tide follows at 3:41pm -0.9'.  It's a WSW swell out of 255º and at it's peak it was 5' to 8'+ and moving a lot of water... Lost Boys & Co... Lesson #1.  Chew with your mouth closed.  Da boys warming up with some coffee and working on their manners. Clear skies and 15 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3 to 5kts and the sea surface was rolling but smooth enough.  The air temperature was 55.0º and the water is 59.5º.  High tide is at 7:13am +6.1' and low tide is at 2:39pm -1.1'.  There's a WSW swell out of 254º at 6.2' and it was 6' to 8' and consistent.  If you were persistent there were some good ones... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Need A Bigger Pump Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... G rabbed this screen shot (#1) from the SurfLine™ cam on the southside of the Hermosa Pier.  It's raining, the surf is pumping through and the lifeguard parking lot is under water.  At this point just a little under knee high, but they're doing their best to move the water to points lower than the lot.  Hard to tell if it was the outfall backing up or the high tide drove all that water around the berm and into the parking lot...  Don't know if they forgot to clear the drain or it's just something you don't do in January without a directive... S o you got the raining part, just under a mile visibility and overall smooth seas.  Winds are consistent offshore averaging about 12kts, with the surface slightly abraded.  The air temperature at checkout was 57.3º and the water is 59.9º.  High tide was at 6:30am +6.0' and low tide will be at 2:02pm -1.0'.  Some big tidal swings this week, so expected some coastal flooding.  It's a WSW swell o

Further Testing Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... N ear the amber sands of Hermosa Beach (#1) Doc Scale was in the water conducting further testing on his new blade.  Nothing official, but we're thinking he liked it.  Easier catching waves, good glide, tracks well.  More testing to follow... K evin Gilligan just off the disabled list, charged the Pier left and looked like he'd never left.  Maybe the cool water helped, but whatever, he looked in shape.  Also congrats as he started his retirement this week!  Not going to let grass grow under his feet, but not the grind of the daily job... C loudy this morning with the sun trying to break through on occasion and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 54.5º and the water is 58.6º.  Low tide was at 11:31am +0.4' and high tide follows at 5:58pm +2.9'.  A WSW swell out of 242º at 3.0' and it was 3' to 5' and that Pier left is still cranking.  The boogie boarders have taken to g

Lost Boys & Co... N ow this (#1) is what it looks like when everybody has gotten cleaned up by the previous wave and this second one is probably going to hit someone you know on the head...  Pretty though... M eanwhile, it was partly cloudy this morning clearing later with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore 2 to 4kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temp was 55.6º and the water is 58.6º.  Low tide was at 10:08am +1.0' and high tide followed at 3:58pm +2.9'.  No dramatic tidal fluctuations, unlike next week that should show some bigger swings.  We have a WSW swell out of 255º at 3.0' and it was 3' to 4'+.  Talking about some rain late tomorrow evening, so let's see what's in store before the storm...  D oc Scale took his new whip out today and it was looking pretty good.  He hesitated to comment, suggesting it needed some further testing... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Wither Thou Goest Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Now you can go on about how many waves you've caught at Hermosa or maybe impress us with the biggest waves you've ridden there.  But you might have to go some to beat Johnny here making his way to the northside.  Long time resident of Hermosa/Puerto Escondido, he's ridden both at max conditions.  Do you know that he's been known to ride standup occasionally?  Probably when he's tired of every wave being overhead.  Co-Hermosa Surf Ranch devotee, he and Jay and Dave never miss a swell.  We watched him a couple of days ago ride the new sandbar left into the office and then take the conveyor belt back out.  He probably rode 40 waves that day.  He rode 3 while Doc and the Professor were paddling out!  He's surfed right through the class and the kids didn't even know he came through.  Another guy who deserves a plaque on the pier! Cloudy this morning and 7 miles visibility.  Winds have been light all day with smooth surface conditions even th

Lost Boys & Co... I magine how good you'd be if your parents had taken you out when you were this young (#1)!  You'd be a contender!  Yep, it's Jesse, Nick and Daisy.  The family that surfs together...  Burfs together?  Gurfs together?  Turfs together?  ??? I nteresting interplay of atmospheric elements this morning.  Started out clear and damp, then got hazy, then full on fog and then hazy sun for the remainder of the morning.  Winds were light offshore 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was 48.0º and the water is 58.8º.  Low tide was at 6:55am +1.8' and high tide will be at 12:34pm +4.3'.  We have a WSW swell out of 244º at 2.6' and it was 2' to 3' and really fun.  The lefts were the way to go, but don'tcha know an odd right came through occasionally. C lass as usual tomorrow, out at 8:15am and then out for the rest of the finals week.  We're hearing rumblings about the start of the competition season, so we'll try and g

Lost Boys & Co... A short report this evening, as we left the Idaho snow (#1) behind for a little Southern California sun!  Not without leaving a mark, however... I t was partly cloudy this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds out of the east by 2 to 4kts.  The sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 49.0º and the water is 59.0º.  Low tide was early at 5:37am +1.9' and high tide will be at 11:32am +5.2'.  It was a WSW swell out of 255º at 2.6' and it was 2' to 3' and as near as we can tell Steve didn't have to go over to Aaron's for a couple of hours... W eird high school schedule this week with classes tomorrow and Wednesday.  Must be finals or something.  Bottom line it gives you a few extra minutes of warming time before hitting it... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

A Well Worn Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... A nother Chilly one this morning with the mercury dipping to 41.5º and the water finally dropping below 60 to 59.4º.  Clear with just a few scattered clouds and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were onshore and added a bit of windchill to the proceedings.  High tide was at 7:34am +6.7' and low tide drains the pond at 3:03pm -1.6'.  It's a west swell out of 269º at 4.3' and there were still some good outsides in the ear high range.  You can see that the sand bar that's set itself up opposite the berm.  The left is a nice rolling takeoff, but the right jacks a bit and makes for a rather speedy run.  Supposed to be windy tonight and we'll see what that brings for the morning! W e're going to be experimenting this week with various posting choices and we're setting up a Instagram account and other things that were just getting the hang of.  The report will still come to your e-mail account, but we're hoping you'll be able to direct p

A Tenured Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W e know you're looking at this photo (#1) and wondering, "What year was that?"  Well, hope you're sitting down!  It was this morning.  Yessirree!  It was clear and cold 40.1º in the air and the water was a nippy 59.7º.  Winds were consistent offshore at 3 to 6kts and the sea surface was smooth.  All of this seemed to be arranged to drop the wind chill down to 30-something.  High tide was at 6:51am +6.4' and low tide is at 2:25pm -1.2'.  We have a west swell out of 276º at 3.3' and it's breaking from 3' to 5' off of some of those new sandbars we've been watching.  Forecast is for little or no change for tomorrow morning, so you might be tempted to suit up and brave the chill. A s a note, we're working on a "SRUF Familia" website and we'll keep you abreast of the progress.  If things go according to plan, the report should land there as well and you can tell all those folks who have questions about ou

Cold Snap Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... D on't know if you noticed, but it's really cold out there!  On our way to the beach it was 39.9º on the time and temperature sign.  The good news is that the water is a full 20º warmer at 59.9º, but we're not convinced at how good that is.  There's 10 miles visibility and a bit of hazy sun with no clouds.  Winds are offshore by 1 to 3kts and the sea surface still has a bit of left over oscillation from the wind yesterday.  Speaking of yesterday's wind, we caught a news clip of palm fronds falling on a car in west L.A.  We're waiting on the Go-Fund-Me request to pay for the guy to buff out his Maserati...  Despite that tragedy high tide was at 6:09am +5.9' and low tide will be at 1:46pm -0.7' for quite a generous tidal swing.  Between the tide and the wind and Billy McIntosh throwing Blue Nun bottles into the rocks at Sapphire, there should be some good beach combing... First Week Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S unrise (#1) lit things up this morning as soon as we thought it was going to keep getting colder.  But it was cold enough!  45.0º air temp and 61.0º in the water.  Winds were out of the east by 4 to 6kts and the sea surface was smooth.  Low tide was at 11:42am +1.2' and high tide follows at 5:39pm +2.8 for a slight perturbation in the tidal flow.  It's a generous WSW swell out of 259º at 4.3' and it was 4' to 6' and some good ones at the Pier.  Not exactly longboard friendly, but Aaron, Steve Dennis, Zack and Dave Shaffer made it look better than we thought.  The kids of course, ripped it up!  Some standout performances by Jackson Owens, Dylan Morrisroe and Billy Galin. O ur forecasters are saying that it'll be a bit smaller mañana and then windy and big on Sunday.  No rain in the forecast, so you can stay dry... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Aloha Vince Ray Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... V ince Ray, South Bay icon and legendary surf instructor passed away yesterday.  He was 66 years old and had taught thousands of South Bay groms how to surf (including our own Jah Morgan!)  His Chevron Surf Camp was a mainstay of the summer beach scene and he was always stoked and ready to get his aspiring surfers into the water.  This last year he fretted about the future of the surf camp, not because of his illness (pancreatic cancer) but because the city of Hermosa wanted to move the container that housed all of the boards and equipment he used in his classes.  We first met him officially when he attended Cal State Dominguez Hills.  He was a special education teacher for the Manhattan Beach School District and he was working on his degree.  His performance as "Surfing Santa" for the Easy Reader was always something that seemed to ring in the season. We're sure that the memories of surfing and the stoke he instilled on his students will carry on al

Only Day Two Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... S o it's only day two of the new year and already both Ginny and Anna have cracked their windshields, Milly got her board run over and the surf is still pumping...  Not like this day (#1) last week when the waves were scraping the bottom of the pier, but still some good power! 20 Miles visibility with only a few clouds.  Winds were offshore by 2 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was once again a chilly 46.8º and the water is 61.7º.  Low tide was at 7:29am +2.7' and high tide was at 12:32pm +3.7' for a slight wiggle in the tides.  It's a WSW swell out of 252º at 4.9' and it was 5' to 6' and Milly, Ginny, Anna and Donnie got some good rides while the Professor was duly drubbed while testing his leash... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!
