Suddenly It's Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... S o it's time to leave Chacahua and we took the collectivo' to the dock and caught the launch back to Zipotelito.  This looks like something you'd find on Tom Sawyer's island.  When there are people waiting, they put a plastic bag on a pole that sticks out into the channel and the launch knows that it should stop!  No walkie-talkies, no cell phones, no smoke signals... C lear, cold and sunny with a weak spring sun trying it's best.  20 miles visibility and the winds were offshore by 2.3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp is 51.2 and the water is 57.0 at the buoy.  Low tide was at 11:04 +0.7' and high tide will follow at 6:25pm +3.2'.  We have a 3.0' swell out of 192º SSW and it's too oblique for our beaches, so we've got 2' mushers that would be perfect to push your cousin from Connecticut into...  For you, however, go get coffee... W henever you're in Zicatela, eating at Taco Brown's is a must.  Ju

Lost Boys & Co... F ish head soup.  Nice to be in a place where they don't mind throwing an entire beast into the soup.  Things haven't been the same since they stopped stewing missionaries... 15 miles visibility with the odd cloud rolling through.  Winds were offshore by 8 kts this morning and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 50.6 and the water was 56.7 very spring-like degrees.  Low tide was at 9:40am +0.9' and High tide will be at 5:11pm +2.8'.  We have a SSW swell out of 199º at 3.3' and it was a rollicking 2', despite the big wind swell event we had yesterday.  What a difference a day makes... I f you're itching to get into a hot balero tournament, Coach Barrio can get you signed up and provide the balero.  In the meantime you can just rent one of his stellar surfboards, with or without the back half...  Kinda funny, you only see the front end of broken boards used as signs.  Maybe with the fins and everything there's just t

Lost Boys & Co... W e actually ate in this place that advertised "tlayudas."  Tlayudas are 12" tortillas that are folded over your choice of meat, chicken or fish and roasted with veggies and all the fixin's.  Tasty and not quite a tostada, but heartier than a taco... D rizzling this morning with 3 miles visibility and clouds to the deck.  Winds were light out of the NE, but the sea surface had a bit of a bump.  The air temperature was 58.3º and the water was 60.1º.  Low tide was at 7:09am +0.8' and high tide was mid-day at 1:21pm +3.1'.  We have a building swell out of the west 262º that started at 2.6' this morning and is now 6.3' and building throughout the night.  Could get to 11', but the wind is also scheduled to ramp up and things look a bit dicey for the morning.  Northwester up to 25kts mañana is the report...  Check'em out... T his was the place we stayed in Chacahua, "Ishamar's."  The best part of this sign was tha

Lost Boys & Co... W e thought we might devote a few reports to the use of the surfboard as signage.  Any blank space will usually do, but the surfboard brings with it a certain cache' that suggests, sport, excitement and of course sex.  Only because, face it,  everything suggests sex (thanks to Freud.)  On #1 we thought at first glance it said "Bananas for rent."   Thank goodness we were wrong... S peaking of sex, Happy Hour tonight at 5:30 at A Basq Kitchen.   15 miles visibility under sunny-hazy skies.  Winds turned onshore early by 3.3kts and the sea surface had a bit of texture to it.  The air temp was 53.3º and the water is 59.0º.  High tide was at 11:07am +4.3' and low tide will follow at 4:55pm +0.9'.  We have a 3.6' swell out of the SW 261º and it's 3' with some fatter ones on the odd set...  Fun and should be funner mañana... #2 goes for the vertical approach, packing in beau-coup information on the up-down format.  Actually this works b

Lost Boys & Co... T his dinner upstairs at Christian's in Chacahua devolved into a domino game that went on for almost three hours.  By the time we left for our digs it was dark and we had to rely on the moon after we left the one street light at the collectivo pick up station.  A warm night with surprisingly few bugs it was kinda nice picking our way through the village... H azy sun this morning with 15 miles visibility and a few high clouds.  Winds were trying to be offshore by 2.3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp said 48º on our plastic weather station located in the orange tree outside the window, but it was officially 55.5º somewhere in Redondo.  At the 46221 NOAA station it was 58.3º and at the Hermosa Pier it was 64º in the water.  All this temperature stuff sounds remarkably relative...  High tide was at 10:33am +4.6' and low tide will follow at 4:33pm +0.6'.  We had a west swell out of 270º at 3.3' and it looked a little better at 3' to

Lost Boys & Co... L ots of milestones throughout our surfing lives.  On day 243 of her run at 366, Morgan Sliff bought in a cake to celebrate Boris "Jetski" Vishnevsky's first year of surfing.  A quick calculation had Jetski at about 200+ days in the surf this past year.  His presence in the water has been uplifting to say the least.  His good humor, camaraderie and skill are a pleasure to behold... A fter yesterday's wind we had clear skies and 15 miles visibility.  Winds were relatively light out of the NE at 3.0kts and there was a slight bump on the water.  The air temperature was a chilly 53.6º and the water got knocked down a degree to 59.7º.  High tide was at 10:01am +4.8' and low tide will be at 4:10pm +0.3'.  We had a west swell out of 269º at 5.9' and it was a solid 4' to 6' on the beach...  Some of the shortboarders like Kyle Beatty were making it look fun, but it didn't look longboard friendly...  Let's look mañana... Lost Boys & Co... T hought this image was intriguing.  The owl as the symbol of wisdom or night, with the skull on it's breast.  The skull has a cross on it's forehead...  Apparently, it's suggesting that you'd be smart to not go out at night... W indy, on shore, gusting to almost 25kts at times, but currently in the 12kt range.  20+ miles visibility with a few scattered clouds quickly scudding by.  The sea surface is chopped up with whitecaps.  The air temperature is 57.5º and the water is 60.3º, despite the wind trying to cool things down.  High tide was at 9:29am +5.0' and low tide will be at 3:46pm +0.1'.  We have a 6.6' swell out of 264º west.  It's a ragged 6' to 8'...  The good news is that it's supposed to calm down during the evening and we might just have some nice wind swell waves mañana...  Check it out... Lost Boys & Co...   T his trip to southern Mexico we decided to concentrate on some of the cultural elements of this culture-rich country.  The artwork of Mexico is justly famous for those like Siquieros, Orozco , Diego Rivera, Frieda Khalo and Rufino Tamayo, but we we've been impressed with some of the street art we fortuitously encountered.  Like this mother-earth/tree-of-life depiction.  Done on a plaster wall it was brilliant in it's rendering... C loudy this morning and it's sure taking it's time getting light outside.  5 miles visibility when you could see.  Winds were onshore from the get-go at 3.7kts and there was a slight bump to the proceedings.  The air temperature was 57.0º and the water was 60.1º.  High tide was at 8:56am +5.1' and low tide will be at 3:21pm -0.1'.  We have a WSW swell out of 257º at 3.9' and it was 3' to almost 5' with a bit of warble... Off The Grid Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... J ust got back into town early this morning from an absolutely incredible trip to southern Mexico, so we're a bit thin on the report (which is basically small surf and a gray morning.)  But in terms of culture, here are a few images to whet your appetite for some of the upcoming reports... #1 is a panoramic view of Puerto Escondido.  Basically everything from the point on the left (which a lot of folks ride when the beach at Zicatela is too big) to the marina at the far right is what you always hear about.  When we got there the main beach WAS too big and we went to the point, which personally I thought was too big.  The second or third time we went down to the point I got drilled so hard I thought I had burst my eardrum and couldn't hear worth a damn for two days... #2 shows some of the outrageous spiral rips that happen when the surf starts to crank.  They're great for getting out, which is really part of the problem.  You paddle out and don't

Lost Boys & Co... A couple of standout surf spots on the island of Barbados.  #1 is called "Duppy's" after the famous Portuguese explorer Manuel Duffy.  A Cove-like right with an occasional left, it was head-high on this day with a stiff wind out of the north-east.  A tricky paddle you had to swing to the right of the bay to avoid the bump coming back from the cliffs.  That and the current made staying on the peak a bit dicey, but you could paddle high and then drift back into the spot for the sets... H igh clouds and 10 miles visibility with winds offshore by 1.6kts and a smooth sea surface.  The air temp was 56.3º and the water is creeping up at 61.9º.  High tide was at 5:22am +4.9' and low tide will follow at 12:37pm -0.1'.  We have a WSW swell out of 268º at 4.6' and it was 3' to 5' this morning with some occasional nuggets... #2 is Soupbowls and is probably the best known of all the Barbados breaks.  It doesn't look that big until you get

Lost Boys & Co...   T his is what happens when you listen to Finley tell you that it's head high...  Well, it WAS by her measure.  In #3 the Professor scrunched up trying to get it overhead, but it wasn't quite working out.  Actually, we had gone to this spot because it was a marine preserve and we were going to do some snorkeling.  But the longer we stood there and watched this little waves pulse through, the more we thought it might be worth a go-out.  The water was crystal clear, it's was 80 degrees and there was this offshore zephyr blowing softly out to sea.  The other thing was that just about 200yds down the road was the end of the preserve...  Thanks to "Mike the Fish Slayer" we had some great fishies that night... H azy skies this morning and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the SE by 2.9kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 57.3º and the water is 61.7º, but they posted a 64º at the Hermosa Pier.  Low tide was at 11:57am +0.4

Lost Boys & Co...   T he water in Barbados ranges from deep-ocean blues to pastel sea foam greens.  Photo #1 is near the now defunct "Sam Lord's Castle."  The point was used by a phenomenally lazy (or smart) pirate who lit the reef at night to make it look like an harbor entrance and when the ships went aground he and his band would row out and pillage and plunder.   It was a living... N ice to have our electricity back on!  Foggy this morning with 50yards visibility.  Winds were light out of the NE by 1.1kts and the sea surface was a bit bumped with low tide backwash.  The air temperature was 56.0º and the water was 61.7º.  Low tide was at 11:07am +0.9' and high tide was at 6:06pm +2.9'.  We have a west swell out of 260º at 3.6' and it was 3' to 5' and some wild backwash at times with the low tide...  Supposed to be building over the next few days... #2 is Fin and Mike out on the north side of the island where the surf and surge are incredibly po
