Lost Boys & Co... H ey, it's a kind of a fish... C lear skies and 20+ miles visibility this morning.  Winds were offshore by 2.7kts and the sea surface was smoof (like the peanut butter.)  The air temperature was 49.3˚ and the water was 56.3˚.  High tide was at 10:33am +4.8' and low tide will be at 5:05pm +0.2'.  The buoy shows a west swell out of 272˚ at 3.0' and the surf was a consistent 3' to 4' and excellent contest waves at Hermosa Pier.  The finals are on Saturday starting at 7am! Mail Bag Answers to yesterday's quiz... Is the correct answer Sadao Watanabe? Birdie (Actually, no...  but that was a good guess!) I dunno where she is, but that's definitely Julia!!  I wish she'd kept up with the sax! Gidget (Definitely Julia... we're getting warmer here!) First of all, that's Boomfwappa behind the traps... Jim Campbell is holding the sax for Julia (Paine) Burke, at Cattleman's on the Redondo Beach Pier...  1976? Boomfwappa (Correct

Lost Boys & Co... T here were a few places yesterday that were protected.  One of them happened to be right underneath Kincaid's.  Not only was it breaking on the north side of the inside of the horseshoe, it was breaking on the south side as well.  We questioned the legality of surfing there, these days, but decided that it would take a while before anyone got there to shout you out... N ot yesterday's brilliant clarity, but 15 miles under hazy sun.  Winds were off by 5.7kts and the sea surface was clean and smooth.  The air temperature was 48.6˚ and the water was 56.7˚ despite yesterday's wind.  High tide was at9:55am +5.3' and low tide will be at 4:36pm -0.2'.  We have a WNW swell out of 301˚ at 4.6' and it was 3' to 5' this morning. S ome fine contest surf at Hermosa Pier this morning as the South Bay Surf League held it's first Men's Short Board Preliminary Heats.  Some fine surfing from all of the participants.  As we've sai

Lost Boys & Co... O vercast and rainy this morning...  Some swell showing on the south end of the bay. 10 miles visibility and a pretty low ceiling, with scattered rain squalls, if you're thinking about floating around.  Winds were out of the SSE at checkout at 9.9kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temp is 61.5˚ and the water is 56.3˚.  High tide is at 7:42am +5.8' and low tide will follow at 2:47pm -0.6'.  Just make sure there's no lightning if you decide to look for the odd piece of sea glass.  We have a west swell out of 262˚ at 3.9'.  Depending on where you're looking we've got 1' to head high surf.  Marine and the Cove have been happening.  The places in the middle not-so-much... O ut of the archives:  Our local pump jockey at the local Mobil on the corner of Beryl and PCH.  Must be around 1969/70.  Today he would be a "gasonista."  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... S o we know that someone hid a box of See's candies somewhere in #11 on the 11th floor of the Topaz International Trump Tower Suites.  When there's no surf down below, it's really easy to get distracted...  So we mounted a thorough search and sure enough we found it.  But you know how cruel chocolate eaters can be.  It was empty.  Empty.  Okay, maybe just a few chocolate sprinkles, from the chocolate cremes.  Not even any papers or the blister pack divider between the levels.  Currently, there are no suspects (other than the usual suspects...) F or real rain.  Not that Southern California drizzlation -spitting "rain," but the real thing.  A short ½ mile visibility through the drops and a pretty low ceiling.  Winds were strong offshore at 8.9 to 13kts.  The sea surface was smooth, but a tad windswept.  The air temp was a wind chilled 56.1˚ and the water was 56.8˚.  High tide is at 7:09am +5.6' and low tide will follow at 2:20pm -0.5

Lost Boys & Co... There's a pair to draw to... "Scooter Boy" and "The Danger Bus."  Be nice and you can have a ride... Cloudy this morning with 12 miles visibility and some haze on the deck.  Winds were offshore by 5.1kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air was a warming 65.3˚ and the water was not at 55.6˚.  High tide at 6:34am +5.4' and low tide will be at 1:52pm dipping into the minuses at -0.3'.  The buoy has a west swell out of 263˚ at 3.0' and that's about what you'd find where it's breaking.  Supposed to start raining about 8pm tonight and then off and on throughout the evening.  Bring your bumbershoot to the checkout...  for stylin' if nothing else... ✠☞☢☞♣ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

W aves were a block long and if you weren't near the corner it was hopeless.  However, there were some loose ends that made it look awfully appealing.  26th St., Danger Boy and the Professor on a morning ride... 17+ miles visibility under hazy sun.  Not quite the clarity of the past week, but still quite summer-like.  Winds out of the SE at 4.1kts and the sea surface was glassy to smooth.  The air temp at checkout was 62.4˚ and the water was 55.9˚.  High tide was at triple 5's 5:55pm +5.2' and low tide will be at 1:21pm +0.0'.  The buoy is showing a west swell out of 262˚ at 3.0', but most spots are either flat or wally-crashy, like our photo.  The weather is supposed to change long about Thursday and with it, maybe the surf...  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... P icture perfect... except you'll notice there's absolutely NO whitewater.  Not a little splash, no ankle snappers, nada...  Some days are like that... L ots of visibility this morning, in the 20+ range with only a few straggling clouds about.  Winds persistent out of the SE at 2.9kts and gusting and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature was 59.4˚ and the water was 55.4˚.  High tide is up at 5:11am +5.0' and low tide will be at 12:46pm +0.4', with some minuses due at the end of the week in the pm for you beach gleaners.  The buoy has a west swell out of 264˚ at 2.6' showing on the beach at 2' to 3', but pretty wally crashy with no where to go...  unless you're thinking about paddling or breakfast. S ometimes you just feel crabby.  These guys, well, they feel crabby all the time.  Always reminds us of the story of the crabs in a bucket.  We walked by and this guy had all these crabs in a bucket, but there was no top.  "

Lost Boys & Co... S o we're behind this bus this morning and there's this sign that says, "DANGER do not turn in front of this bus."  So we're sitting there thinking, "You can never pass this bus."  Somehow this caused some distress on our part.  Buses don't go very fast and it's kinda nice, when you get a chance and it's safe and all, to zip around these barn-sized conveyances.  But according to this sign you can't do it.  Nope, sorry...  We're still behind it...  The sign says "San Fernando 12 miles..." C lear and not nearly as cold.  Amazing what a few degrees will do.  20+ miles visibility.  Winds are offshore by 3.6kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temp is a cool 52.9˚, but up 6.7˚ from yesterday.  The water is 54.9˚ and going for 55!  Low tide is 7:45am +1.7' and high tide will follow at 1:15pm +3.4'.  We have a SW swell out of 236˚ at 1.3 barely breaking feet.  Translate that to 6" on the

L ots of visibility this morning, in the 20+mile range with a bit of smoggies on the deck.  Winds were offshore by 2.9kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was just a tad warmer at 46.2˚ and the water was 54.9˚.  It's supposed to get into the 70's for the end of the week ands no foul weather in sight.  Low tide is at 6:26am +1.7' and high tide will be at 12:08pm +4.2'.  The buoy has a weak SW swell out of 217˚ at 1.6' and we're thinking it's not quite that big.  On an entirely different planet they're considering running the "Eddie" this week.  Maybe

F reeze-ass cold.  Ask Danger Boy, he'll tell you.  But it was clear and you could see as far as you wanted.  And the wind was offshore by 2.9kts and the sea surface was that perfect offshore brushed satin finish.  Just enough wind to blow up some nice manes as the waves galloped down the beach.  The air temperature was a molasses stopping 44.1˚ and the water was colder than a Northern Irish beer at 55.2˚.  High tide was at 11:15am +5.0' and low tide will be at 5:54pm -0.1'.  We have a west swell out of 269˚ at 2.0' at the 46221 buoy.  It was just about that big, with a few fatter outsides.  DB and the Professor decided the sun was making the rest of the ingredients just right for a bit of a go-out south of the Hermosa Pier.  It was scenic, but the first time you went over a cresting wave t

Lost Boys & Co... W hen Andrew and Kelli told us they were going to get married on the beach we thought, "What a great idea!"  Then they told us it was going to be in Shell Beach.  "You mean Shell Beach, California ?"  They said "Yes!, on the beach."  So we thought, "Okay, we'll bundle up and it'll be a tad breezy, but it'll be fun."  Then they said, "Yeah, it's gonna be on January 12th at 3pm."  Then we thought, "Hmmm, where's my Land's End parka.  We'll need raincoats, waders and an umbrella.  Maybe some waterproof matches..."  So Ché, LoLa and the Professor, along with 250 years of sky diving experience and 500 years of surfing time rolled up and down the coast with Shell Beach in the crosshairs of their GPS's.  It started out freeze ass cold, but as we got closer to Shell Beach a funny thing happened;  it just kept getting warmer.  By one o'clock the wind had died.  By two it must

Lost Boys & Co... T ake a close look at this shot of Burnout.  There's a rip that roaring out to sea at about 10kts.  It looked to be about 50 feet wide and about a quarter of a mile long!  If you had jumped into this thing it would have taken about 2 minutes to be outside, way outside.  By that time you'd be wondering if it were such a great idea in the first place...  but your hair would be dry... T he winds have died and although there's still some residual bumpiness, it looks like we're getting ready to resume our regular weather patterns.  25+ miles visibility under predominantly clear skies.  Winds were from the north at 7.0kts.  The air temp was 46.2˚ and the water is a full 10 degrees warmer at 56.3˚.  High tide was at 8:10am +7.0' and low tide will follow at 3:14pm -1.7'.  If you get off early this afternoon, head down to the beach and check out some of the low tide beachcombing opportunities.  We have a WNW swell out of 286˚ at 6.6'.  Ther

D azzlingly beautiful this morning with unlimited visibility and nary a cloud in the sky.  The hawk was off by 6.6kts and the sea surface was lightly burnished by the wind, but smooth.  The sun felt good even though the air was a brisk 52.0˚ and the water was 57.7˚.  High tide was at 5:46am +6.3' and low tide will be at 1:05pm -0.8'.  We have a west swell out of 272˚at 5.2' and the surf was 3' to 5' and cleaning up from the big winds of Monday.  You might expect it to be a bit cleaner, if not a tad smaller mañana.  Will certainly be worthy of a look... C lear skies and unlimited visibility, with a sharp wind blowing from 12 to 15kts out of the NNW.  The sea surface was choppy and getting choppier as the wind continued to build.  The air temperature was 52.2˚ and the water was 57.2˚.  Low tide was at 12:17pm -0.1' and high tide is late at 6:34pm -0.1'.  We're in for some big tidal changes this week, peaking on Friday with an 8.7" tidal swing.  Minus tides all this week in the afternoons.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 261˚ at 5.6' and we have 5' to 6' surf at most spots.  If it weren't for the wind, it would probably be interesting at a few choice spots.  As it is, mañana, seems to be the top choice...
