Flamingo Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... O kay , so when you're in Boise do as the Boys do and instead of TP-ing the home of those whose attention you wish to attract, you install a flock of flamingos on the front lawn.  It's safe, funny and except for the little plastic droppings, it's pretty clean. A beautiful fall morning on the day before Halloween.  We have 25 miles visibility, under clear cool skies.  Winds are offshore by 3.8kts and the sea surface is smooth with a slight tack.  The air temp is 56.0° and the water has rebounded a bit to 63.1° (thank goodness!  it was waaay too cold!)  High tide is at 7:40am +5.4' and low tide will follow at 2:07pm +0.9'.  The buoy is reading a small 2.6' swell out of the west at 263° and we're calling the resulting waves 1' and poor.  Good morning for a hot cocoa though... O ur second shot this morning is of Gidget in front of the "Catalnia Coffee Co."  We always thought it was the "Catalina Coffee Co," but she

Lost Boys & Co... W e took this pic of a leaf in Boise last week.  Good thing we did - everything is getting covered with snow today!  We contacted Allison Wonderland and she verified that it was indeed snowing.  Not to be outdone, our water temps took a dive - from 67.1° on Monday to 56.8° today!  That's a 10.3° drop.  Not only did we have to wear a long suit, booties are now the order of the day. A beautiful day despite the drop in temps, with 20 miles visibility and clear skies .  Winds were offshore this morning, by 3.2 kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was a brisk 50.5° and the water was the aforementioned freeze-ass 56.8°.  High tide was at 7:20am +5.0' and low tide will follow at 1:34pm +1.5'.  We're gearing up for some pretty radical tidal swings as we hit daylight savings time head-on.  The buoy is reading a 270° west swell at 4.3' and we're calling the waves 3' to 5'.  We surfed Topaz this morning and some of the peaks end

Lost Boys & Co... I n some places summer is really over and you can't even get into the old swimming hole.  Allison Burke is taking a long look, remembering some of those summer days! H azy skies with 20 miles visibility this morning.  Still windy with 13.6kt gusts and choppy seas.  The wind is straight out of the north, so if you can find someplace to hide and a sunny corner, you can warm right up!  The air temperature is 61.5° and the water has dropped a few to 63.9°.  High tide was at 7:03am +4.7' and low tide will be at 12:59pm +2.1'.  The buoy is reading a swell out of the west at 272° and 5.2'.  We're calling it 3' to 5' with some nice thick outsides.  Topaz had some powerful sets coming through and Burnout was pounding.  Check it out! O ur second shot is of Sapphire and Topaz.  We surfed Sapphire this morning, while the wind blew side-shore the whole time.  It wasn't epic, but there were some good waves.  The water has dropped to low-springsu

Lost Boys & Co... S o, tell us, where do apples come from?  Well, lots of times they come from a store.  Sometimes they're even packaged in tissue paper or wrapped in some slick plastic shrink wrap.  But with all the farmer's markets around these days, you can really score some good, fresh apples.  Of course, you could head out to the country and find an apple orchard (yes, Virginia, apples grow on trees!) and pick them yourself.  We did just that and found some great red and yellow delicious apples.  The folks that own the orchard give you a bucket, a long handled apple plucker and send you out to pick your favorite apples.  They also tell you that while you're out toiling among the branches, that you can eat as many apples as you want.  What they don't tell you, is that if you eat enough apples they will ferment, sublimate and fester right there in your very intestines!  Not good.  Not good at all...  We know... V isibility is 12 miles and the skies are cloudy

Lost Boys & Co... I t's fall up in the north country and we took this shot as we jumped headfirst into a huge pile of similarly colored leaves.  As you can tell we were getting pretty close to touchdown when we snapped this shot... A beautiful morning here in the southland though, sunny and predicted to reach the 70's.  20 miles visibility and high clouds.  Winds are offshore by 3.2kts and the sea surface is smooth with a light tack on the outside.  The air temperature is 69.1° and the water is 67.1°, still really nice in your spring suit.  High tide was at 6:28am +4.0' and low tide was at 11:26am +3.2'.  The swell is predominantly out of the west by 260° and the buoy is calling it 2.6'.  We're calling it 3' and it looked every bit of that as we surfed the Hermosa Pier this morning. O ur second shot this morning is of our favorite thespian, Allison Burke (right) in her roll as "Dr. Emmett" in John Patrick's "Curious Savage."  Sh

Lost Boys & Co... "Make a right turn at Fallon..."  Last week we were in Groveland, outside of Yosemite and this weekend we're in Boise, Idaho.  Someone asked how we got here from there and that was our smart-assed answer.   It's foggy at the checkout this morning (Danger Boy has provided the details) and visibility is around 100 yards.  Winds are calm and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temp is 63.7° and the water is 66.9° - still in the springer category!  Low tide is at 5:26am +3.2' and high tide will follow at 12:15pm +5.0'.  We have a 3.9' swell out of the WSW at 265° and we're calling it 3' to 4'. Our plan is to show some fall colors next week, so stay tuned.  There are also supposed to be some waves on the way, so we'll report on whatever we find!  Have a great weekend! Lost Boys & Co... T oday's shot is Wapama falls on the west side of Hetch-Hetchy Valley.  The falls is spectacular, but that blue sky is also pretty fantastic.  It was really that blue! G orgeous day today!  Visibility is 20 miles and there isn't a cloud in the sky.  Started out a bit foggy at the beach, but that burned off fairly quickly.  Winds are offshore by 5.6kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temp was 59.4° at the checkout and the water is 66.7°.  Low tide is at 5:02am +2.9' and high tide follows at 11:33am +5.5'.  Our favorite buoy is reading a SW swell out of 229° at 3.9' and we're calling the surf 3' to 5'.  Topaz and Torrance are breaking pretty hard, but some of the rockier places have some nice waves.  Check Rat, the Cove and Sapphire.  F rom:  Shannon & Devon Bogart Saturday is Devon's Redondo High Girls Volleyball Pasta dinner fund raiser .  We would love for you to come! It starts at 6:00 in the Redondo High Cafet

Whispering Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H ere's a shot of the west side of the Hetch-Hetchy reservoir as we made the trek to Oompaloompa Falls.  Legend has it that John Muir thought that Hetch-Hetchy was even more beautiful than Yosemite Valley.  That's a pretty powerful statement from a guy who used to climb 100' pine trees during windstorms for kicks.  In the early 20th century the city of San Francisco bought the valley and dammed one end.  It seems that during the great earthquake, most of the damage resulted when they ran out of water and a lot of the city burned down.  Well, that's not going to happen again!  It was gorgeous, especially with a bit of fall colors starting to show.  A beautiful morning with 22 miles visibility and nearly cloudless skies.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp at the checkout was 59.6° and the water is 66.7°.  High tide is at 10:58am +5.9' and low tide will be at 6:28pm +0.1'.  The 46221 buoy is telling us that there

S o you're standing on the edge of the dam at Hetch-Hetchy and you're looking over the shear drop and you notice this stairway running all the way down to the bottom.  All that stands between you and this adventure is a chain and - oh yeah - 17 flights of stairs.  We decided to hike to the waterfall instead... A beautiful morning with 20 miles visibility and clear skies.  Winds were offshore by 1.9kts and the sea surface was smooth with a slight bit of tack.  The air temp was 63.3° and warmed quickly as the sun rose and the water is 67.1°, pretty warm for the middle of October.  High tide is at 10:26am +6.3' and low tide will be at 5:40pm -0.2'.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 255° at 3.9' and we're calling it 3' to 4'.  Kinda fun early, with the tide making things a bit fat later on... Lost Boys & Co... W hat the hell is this thing? (photo #1)  Found it on the launch-pad in Florida under the rocket that I am loading with fuel.  I'm thinking this thing wants to go home?  Well, I just wanted to say, once I find a match for the rocket I will be flying home next week Yaaaaaaaaaaa! (Wow, that's gotta be some match!  Ed.) P artly cloudy this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature is 64.4° and the water is a delightful 67.8° (still being perfect for a springer!)  High tide is at 9:55am +6.5' and low tide will be at 4:55pm -0.5'.  The #46221 buoy is reading a 3.0' swell out of the SW (224°) and we're calling it 3' to 4'.  We surfed Torrance beach with Tyrone James this morning and he was ripping it up.  He got a couple of lefts that started out looking pretty wally and made them with room to spare.  He's been riding that yellow Matt Calvani Becker and he can really mak

Lost Boys & Co... O kay, it's only been 20 hours since it stopped raining .  We know the Lifeguard Service and Danger Boy suggest 72 hours before it's safe to go in the water. Barry Santos always told us that 48 hours was more than enough.  Bunker Spreckles always though 24 hours was good enough for anything.  Mike Purpus and Don Swift are in the water today and would've been yesterday, but Don had to work and Mike didn't wake up.  Have you had your hepatitis shot?  That might influence your decision... P artly cloudy with 12 miles visibility.  Winds were calm at the checkout and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp is 63.1° and the water is 65.5°.  High tide is at 7:56am +5.7' and low tide will follow at 2:06pm +0.6'.  The buoy is reading a 5.2' swell out of 245° (WSW) and we're calling it 4' to 6'.  We snapped our photo of this lad at Topaz straightening out his legs to see if this wave was honestly overhead.  It was and there some fi

Lost Boys & Co... Y ou know how you're waiting for the doctor to come in and excise your tonsils, or cut off those unsightly skin tags around your eyes or remove that 6th toe on your left foot.  You notice some of the warnings on the various equipment (photo #1) that they've got warming up for your especial procedure.  This one makes you begin to wonder about the chemical nature of the anesthetic you'll be using.  Your first question to the nurse:  "Is the anesthetic flammable?"  Her answer:  "You are the first person to ever ask me that question."  S o, it's raining out there this morning and we have barely 2 miles visibility.  The clouds are right on the deck and the winds are out of the SE by 3.8kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature is 64.8° and the water is 65.7°.  High tide is at 7:27am +5.2' and low tide will be at 1:19pm +1.3'.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 261° at 4.9'.  The surf is a strong 3'

B lasting on our way from the Topaz International Trump Tower Suites (the 11th floor,) to check out the surf, we spotted this tear-drop trailer on the corner of Beryl and Catalina.  Kinda makes you wanna hit the road and find some hidden spots in Baja or the mainland.  Mazatlan is sounding pretty warm and welcoming right about now... V isibility was 10 miles this morning, with cloudy skies and a little drizzle in the corners.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was glassy.  The air temperature was 61.3° and the water is 65.1°.  High tide is at 6:28am +4.2' and low tide will be at 11:19am +2.8'.  The buoy is reading a really weak 1.6' swell out of the SW at 218°.  We're calling the surf flat to 1' and poor.  Currently the weather is moving in and we're hoping that the predicted swell arrives this evening or tomorrow.  If it does indeed rain, we

Fat Tumor Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... N o!  This is NOT the Professor's heart.  For one thing it's too large and for another it's pumping way too fast.  This is what is called a lipoma.  It was removed from the wall of his chest in a simple out patient procedure early this morning after he checked out the surf.  C loudy this morning with rain showers scattered across the playing field.  We can see the golden city of El Dorado across the bay so we're calling it 20 miles.  Winds are offshore by 3.7kts and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temperature is 64.2° and the water is 66.0°.  High tide is at 6:58am +4.7' and low tide will be at 12:26pm +2.1'.  The buoy is reading a 2.3' swell out of the west at 260° and we're calling it 2' and breaking right on shore.  The gutters are barely running but they're black sludge.  Caution is advised, but only if the surf comes up... Lost Boys & Co... T his is a bit of an abbreviated report this morning.  We're having some network, spatial, existential and computer problems and it looks like we're going to be sending out the report infrequently for an as yet unknown amount of time.  We beg your patience and our hope is that we can get things back on track as soon as possible.  U ntil then, have a great day (it's a little small but it looks fun!), good surfing and we hope to see you soon! Fondant Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have a shot of the Coach pointing out the very heavy layer of fog that moved through the beaches this morning.  It was thick, moved quickly through and was cold.  Kind of an odd day weather wise. C urrently visibility is 10 miles after the fog galloped away.  Winds are calm, but we can see some tack on the water out at the buoy, so expect things to get windy early.  Right now the sea surface is smooth.  The air temp is 65.8° and the water is 68.9°.  High tide is at 8:50am +5.3' and low tide will follow at 2:56pm +0.9'.  The buoy is reading a 2.0' swell out of the SSW at 207° and we're calling it 1' and very poor.  Let's hope things hop up a bit for the weekend. T o the Editor: (Re: Sheep with leggings photo:)    I think those are Original Ugg boots ...   B WD (Re:  Travel plans:)   Went to Cabo Sun-Thur and hit it perfect. W e were thinking the other night about all of the places that wouldn't do so well in a tsunami.  Kinda like Roessler pool.  Can you imagine that one minute you're doing laps in this crystal clear warm aquatic environment and the next you're flying past Haggerty's at 20kts and wondering what it's going to be like when you start heading back toward shore.  B eautiful day today!  17 miles visibility under a hazy fall sun.  Winds stayed offshore all morning at 3.9kts and the sea surface was a most excellent glassiness.  The air temp was 64.4° and the water is 68.4°.  High tide was at 8:31am +5.0' and low tide will follow at 2:24pm +1.3'.  The buoy is reading a 2.3' swell out of the SSW at 207° and we're calling the waves a clean and glassy 1' to 3' with screaming little peelers.  But you could slice'em - yeah, you could!
