Feeling A Lot Like Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... H ere's a shot of Sappharua breaking just about even with the end of the jetty.  There were some bigger ones... B umped and uneven this morning, with 12 miles visibility under clear, cloudless skies.  Winds blew all night and then abruptly around 5:30am, stopped and turned offshore.  Sporadic intervals of off, on and profound calm ensued, while the sea surface remained bumped and chaotic.  We kept waiting for it to even out, but it defied our patience.  The air temp at checkout was 55.1° and the water temp has plummeted to 54.7°.  We weren't expecting we'd be going back to booties until November - we just got through throwing them back into the car...  High tide is at 8:07am +3.9' and a not-so-low tide follows at 1:48pm +1.0'.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 277° fat at 6.2'.  Lots of waves in that range maxing at about 7'-8'.  Bumpy though - be ready to bandage those kidneys...  Tomorrow (despite the predictable crowds)

Lost Boys & Co... T hree months - bam-zoom - just like that and we're installing Marco on an airplane back to the homeland.  He managed between his hectic work schedule to fit in some great adventures, like running in the SuperBowl 10k with Tia Annie, when he'd been here all of 3 days!  Surfing, skiing, biking and a bit of dancing here and there - yeah - he's the best!  Think he'll be back...? H azy sun this morning, with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were slightly offshore at checkout at 1.1kts and the sea surface still has that residual bump from the pm winds.  High tide is at 7:23am +3.9' and low tide will follow at 1:21pm +0.8'.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 265° true at 3.9'.  We're calling the resulting waves 3' to 4' and looking like a wind-knocked spring morning.  Actually, things might straighten out a bit for the afternoon and the rising tide.  Take a look... A nd if you get a chance take a closer look near the end of the

Lost Boys & Co... L ooking more like yesterday than we had hoped this morning... C lear skies, 20 miles visibility and it's still too windy in the am at 4.6kts.  Light chop on the sea surface and it's freshening in the afternoon.  The air temperature is 55.5° and the water is a windblown 55.9°.  The sun sure makes it nice though.  High tide is at 6:31am +3.9' and low tide will be at 12:18pm +0.7'.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 278° at 4.3'.  We're calling it 3' to 5', but it's ragged and sucking out as the tide goes down.  Should be some better conditions tomorrow, but you can be sure the swell will also take a hit... #2 We have the Portagee crew at Brother's for a bit of brekkie before heading to the Anaheim Mouse Palace.  L to R:  Marco, Davide, the Professor, Nuno, Carlos and Luis.  They head to Vegas and then on to the rest of their Cali tour.  Do they like it here?  The Hooter's Bikini Contest might have clinched it for

Lost Boys & Co... I nterestingly enough today's photo #1 is included in photo #2.  Maybe about a hundred years later, but who's counting?  The pier on the far left is the old lumber pier and until the late 60's the tracks were still in place all the way to the spur at Sapphire St.  There's still a divot in the wall where they could straighten the cars.  It doesn't make any sense when you see it now.  Every so often people dive there and claim to see pilings, but we've never found them...  Photo #1 was this morning just after a huge set came through that broke 30 feet beyond the rocks.  You could've gone either way, but you had to make up your mind really quick... C lear skies after the wind blew all night and cleansed the atmosphere.  20 miles visibility, with only a bit of haze from the ocean spray.  Winds are from the NWbN starting around 5kts and gusting to 12 to 15.  A light to medium chop on the sea surface and expect white caps by mid-morning.  T

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have two views of the Professor's experimental cylindrical hydrophilic acceleration chamber.  #1 demonstrates the random array of water born precipitates rapidly falling out of suspension.  Although random, the pattern appears almost predictable.  Number two hearkens back to the formation of the universe as the rays of the central mass begin to coalesce into defined spokes, creating a miniature galaxy right there in our bucket - uh, we mean our cylindrical hydrophilic acceleration chamber... H oping you had a Happy Easter.  The weather's in a changing mode and things are supposed to be warming up this week and the Santa Ana's are supposed to kick up.  This morning we had clear skies and 17 miles visibility.  Winds started early this morning and by 8am it was 6.9kts out of the SW and the sea surface was in chopped mode, just short of white caps.  The air temperature was 55.0° and the water was 58.8°.  Considering this is April 25th, the water

N o.  We have no idea why people put the Body Glove™ stickers on their cars tilted in the left hand corner.  We asked the Professor why he did it.  "I did it because everyone is doing it and I am a sheep.  He continued, "When our father would ask, "Why are you doing that?""  We'd answer "Because everyone is doing it."  He'd then counter with, "I suppose if everyone jumps into the ocean, you would too!"  Then we'd say, "How big is the surf?"  This was to indicate that we did have some standards, although minimal... M ostly, partly, cloudy with sun in between the margins.  16 miles visibility, but not much to see out there.  Winds were onshore from the start of things from 3 to 5kts and the sea surface was slightly chopped going into full chop by about 11am.  The air temp was 57.5° and the water was still cool at 57.4°.  Low tide was at 7:48am -0.5' and high tide will follow at 2:43pm +3.4'.

Lost Boys & Co... A nd a Happy Birthday it is to our own Annie "LoLa" Paine.  No matter how hard she tries, she'll never catch up to the Professor, who just happens to be really old.  In Photo 1.  She is shown with her Portuguese cabaña boy Marco (who is visibly food-drunk from the eats at Gourmet Foods open house,) Gen Carlisle, Kenny "the Flying Torpedo" Norris, Marcel & Athlyn Lagnaz.  A gray spring morning we have today, with 10 miles visibility under a pretty heavy overcast.  Winds were calm at checkout and the sea surface was smooth.  Should pick up during the day with 8 to 10 kts winds out of the WSW.  The air temp was 58.2° and the water is unrepentant at 57.2°.  Low tide was at 6:45am -0.9' and high tide will follow at 1:22pm +3.5'.  The 46221 buoy is reading a SSW swell out of 202° true at 3.3'.  It's still a bit too south and we're getting about 2' of that total.  Still some waves if you were patient like Don Swift

Lost Boys & Co... " F eets don't fail me now..."  When the bad guys are bigger, uglier and not as fast, running is always a good choice (fig.1  feets considering the running option.) If they're really bad, super ugly, fast enough, but not super nimble we suggest scaling a wall.  Gotta make it a high wall though... (fig. 2  this was almost too high for the scaling option.) L ooks like the gray is starting early this year.  Overcast skies with a bit of the drizzles early on and 15 miles visibility.  Winds were onshore from the get-go by 4.6kts and the sea surface had the expected light chop to go with it.  The air temperature was 59.3° and the water is 57.4°.  Low tide was at 5:50am -1.2' and high tide will be at 12:15pm +3.8'.  We have a SW swell out of 217° at 3.3', but it's passing us by obliquely and we're only showing 2' of it. O vercast this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were about 5kts offshore at checkout and turned pretty early until by 10am it was onshore and the sea surface had a light chop.  The air temperature was 61.2° and the water was 58.6°.  High tide was at 10:24am +4.6' and low tide will be at 3:48pm +0.8'.  The buoy was reading a SW swell out of 231° at 3.6'.  We're calling it 3' to 5' with some long rights and short lefts at Topaz and short rights and long lefts at Sapphire.  A real gray spring day... S o, what's the best?  A Dodger game (they won 2 to 1 over the Cardinals) or a chocolate fountain?  We crashed Gourmet Foods every-other-year open house and got food-drunk.  Marco is seen in photo #2 wonder

(A note of caution:  One should only beat the drum.  There is not an acceptable substitute.  Thank you...  The Duke and the Dude...  Ed.) G orgeous day out there this morning.  15 miles visibility, under clear skies and warm sand.  Winds were calm at checkout and the sea surface was only slightly bumped from the wind swell.  The air temp was a cool 52.4° and the water is still refusing to get warm at 56.7°.  High tide was at 7:49am +4.9' and low tide will follow at 1:56pm -0.0'.  The ever popular 46221 Buoy is reading a west swell out of 261° at 3.6'.  We're calling it 3' to 4' with a rather persistent rip off the jetty at Sapphire, sending you floating toward 615 and the end of the line.  Haggs local and Big Bob Boy, Robert Stassi made it down to Sapphire this morning and joined us for a few peelers.  We really liked that Cork

Lost Boys & Co... F uckin' A!  So yesterday Fred Tisue is rolling with Mark O'Mailman Mitchler and suddenly he's not making any sense and one of his arms isn't obeying basic commands.  Next thing you know he's in Torrance Memorial next to Miloe (because Miloe has his own suite on the top floor and gets all of the good eats) and they're scanning his CAT to see what's going on with his wiring.  Among the good news:  They're letting Freddy out of the hospital this afternoon if he behaves.  They determined that the fluid in Miloe's cardiac sac is draining and they decided NOT to open him up and pump it out.  Danger Boy is not in the hospital (He was also not in the lineup, so we don't know where he is.) M eanwhile, spring continues to sprong and it was another beautiful day here in lotus land.  20 miles visibility, under mostly sunny skies.  Offshore winds in the am at 5.7kts and the sea surface was smooth and wet to the touch.  The air temp was

Lost Boys & Co... N ick Corsinita, at 102 big ones, the Lost Boys oldest member, missed a turn and ran his Ferrari into the hereafter - figuratively speaking.  He lived a long life full of work, laughter and travel.  He worked for the Feds and let contracts on some of the biggest military-industrial contracts of the 20th century.  He could tell you how much it cost for us to rent Bikini Atoll before we rendered it uninhabitable, where all the money went when Cuba turned communist and why Lyndon Johnson was behind Kennedy's assassination.  One Thanksgiving the power went out and he spent a couple of hours entrancing the kids and grown-ups alike with stories of days gone by, until dinner was ready and the power magically went back on.  Bad news:  The Ferrari was totaled.  Good news:  The blond was fine. A blustery spring day we're having here.  Visibility 12 miles, under mostly cloudy skies.  Winds were onshore from the NW from the get-go at 6.9kts and the sea surface was

B eautiful spring day this.  Mostly sunny skies and 12 miles visibility.  Winds were variable, but predominantly offshore at 3.4kts.  The sea surface was smooth, except for some of the rebound off the jetty.  The air temperature was 52.1° and the water is hanging down in the 56.1° region.  Low tide is late at 11:54am +0.1' and high tide is even later at 6:45pm +3.9'.  Everything changes tomorrow, including your underwear.  The buoy tells us that we have a west swell out of 264° true at 3.9'.  Topaz and Sappharua like that kind of thing, so they ratcheted it up to 4' to 6' and bounced some nice ones off the rocks.  Great day.  Tommy Horrigan, is leading the pack in pieces of broken equipment this season.  The Professor has 3 and

Lost Boys & Co... W e went to the Hermosa Beach celebration for the inductees to the "Walk of Fame" Friday night.  We managed to get the attention of the cute Sunday Brother's girl while she was serving the tri-tip burritos.  Yow-zum...  If you want to see some additional photos go to the Spyder/HB Film Fest and Big Wave Challenge Facebook page.  In fact if they have the video of Matt Mohegan, that won first prize, you'll get quite a rush.  On a LEFT he took off on the SOUTH side of the rocks at Hammerland (El Porto.)  You might recall that the jetty used to be quite a bit longer, so there's lots of rocks out there to cause things to peak up.  He takes off and you see him cross the end of the jetty with this huge boil bubbling beneath him.  The entire audience held it's breath until he got to the other side, then they erupted.  Well, everyone except Tyler.  Bet he's seen that boil lots in the past...  Next year... T hose big white cumulus clouds bumping around the sky this morning with unlimited visibility and all the smog blown out to Las Vegas or Cedar Breaks or even Salt Lake City.  Winds started up onshore and are freshening as we speak.  12kts out of the SW and the sea surface is chopped going to white caps.  The air temp at checkout was 49.0° and the water was back to a refreshing 56.7°.  Yeah, like we thought it was going to tickle 60 and then the wind comes up, dredging all that cold water off the bottom.  Low tide is at 7:16am +0.3' and high tide will follow at 2:01pm +2.8'.  The buoy is reading a SSW swell out of 205° at 6.2' and we're looking at 4' to 6' waves bouncin
