A Phonic Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... H ere's this morning's playing field (#1).  40th St. El Porto.  We can see why El Porto surfers are so aggressive, angry and belligerent.  You have to wait in line until they open the gate at 6:15am and people are cutting in front of you, yelling and carrying on and in general making the entire experience so dismal that you want to take up checkers or something that doesn't require your presence at the beach.  Despite all that negativity co-captains Dane and Kade (#2) surfed like champs and helped propel Redondo to victory over El Segundo.  Once again our girls came in 1, 2, 3 in both short and longboard and looked impressive in the meantime. H azy sun this morning and less than 10 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the SSW from 1 to 2kts and the sea surface was smooth and most accommodating.  The air temp was 55.7º and the water is 59.4º and trying to lose that iodine smell.  Low tide was at 6:54am -1.1' and high tide fills in at 1:36pm +3.5'

Lost Boys & Co... T he swell has gone down a foot or so, but these little wedges kept coming through the office (#1).  It was mainly cloudless and warmed up quickly, 59º in the air and 57.7º at the buoy.  Still a trace of algae in the water although the iodine smell has dissipated a bit.  Low tide was at 5:54am -1.3' and high tide followed at 12:22pm +3.8'.  We have a SSW swell out of 199º at 3.3' and it was turning the corner nicely and leaving us with some solid 3 to 4 footers and some nice long lines to build up some speed.  Paddling out yesterday Doc ? suddenly thought his leash had wrapped around his shoulder??  He didn't hear the little fisher woman on the pier yelling that she had a big one on the line.  You guessed it, she had snagged Doc above the right nipple through his wetsuit.  We encouraged him to just bend the hook around and make it a nipple ring, but he felt it would reflect poorly on his professional image...  Like how often does he work without a

Lost Boys & Co... A little Rick Griffin (#1) always makes the day a little brighter.  Even if it's in black and white... T oo bad we don't have smell-o-vision so you could smell the rather acrid smell of the surf this morning (#2).  It could be from the oil seepage, or the algae bloom, or Doc Scale's theory that it has to do with salt water intrusion, but it smelled pretty bad and there was a lot of ambient foam.  Winds started out offshore by 3.4kts and turned about 9am.  The sea surface had a lazy roll to it.  The air temperature was 50º and the water was back to 59.0º.High tide was at 10:24am +4.6' and low tide will be at 3:50pm +0.8'.  We have a west swell out of 278º at 3.9' and it was 4' to 5' with some pitching peaks that rolled into some deep inside holes...  Like high tide... A year ago today (#3) we were spending the evening in Puerto Escondido and wondering how to get in without "handing the honk."  Couldn't figure it out s

Lost Boys & Co... I f José made it to have side bites (#1), then you'd better damn-well use side bites...  Like that... W indier than shit this morning.  13kts from the west.  Some clouds rolling in west to east.  The air temperature was 55.0º and the water is trying at 61.2º (try harder...  Thank You)  High tide was at 9:33am +4.0' and low tide will be at 3:16pm +0.4', switching up to some morning minus tides starting Wednesday.  We have a west swell out of 273º at 4.9' and it was a blown down 3' to maybe 5' depending...  The wind is supposed to be offshore in the morning so check it and hope for the best... C loudy this morning and almost looked like rain might fall.  Winds were out of the SE by 7kts and changed pretty early to whip things up.  The air temperature was 53.6º and the water can keep getting warmer at 61.5º.  High tide was at 4:58am +4.3' and low tide was at 12:25pm +0.0'.  We have a west swell out of 280º at 4.9' and it was 4' to 6' with some fat, wild, sets coming through.  It was Redondo Vs. Palos Verdes this morning and the Sea Hawks managed to dethrone the Sea Kings 80 to 67.  Turns out the determining heats featured the women!  They surfed strong and powerfully and made the big difference in the score... D eep in Mexico you'd be surprised at how many vintage VW buses are still plying the highways...  Spotted this flat gray primer model (#1) in Puerto Escondido outside of Kika's Circus bar...  If you find yourself there, order the café au lait.  You get two for the price of one and if the barkeep flips the lid from the mezcal bottle and you catch it you get another one...  Don't worry, by the time you've had three you couldn't catch the plague... B eautiful morning with just a bit of sideshore from the southwest at 2 to 4kts.  The air temperature was 53.9º, but warmed up very nicely and the water is 60.6º.  One tide today and tomorrow and it was Low at 10:33am +0.5'.  We had a SW swell out of 232º at 3.9' and it was 3' to 5' with some ledgy right lines. Lost Boys & Co... F or a hundred pesos you get a dozen oysters (#1).  That's a little less than 50 cents a bivalve and they come with a squirt of lime and a dash of flavorful hot sauce (almost as good as Mr. Christiano's.)  Tarsan, Capitán Donaldo and the Professor made short work of that platter, for sure! S tarted out cloudy this morning, but the sun broke through and visibility was about 10 miles.  Winds were light offshore and the sea surface was smooth. The air temp was 48.9º and the water is trying at 60.6º.  Low tide was at 6:46am +0.3' and high tide follows at 1:24pm +2.9'.  We have a SW swell out of 225º at 3.3' and it was 2' to 3' in the surf and some nice ones on the odd sets... Lost Boys & Co... Y es, Jeff "Rip" Neal is back and on the S&CR!  He's down south and should we venture that way we'll drop by his office and let him check our crowns... M eanwhile, the wind decided to give up a bit and it was offshore this morning blowing 2 to 3kts.  The sea surface was smooth.  The air was back to the chilly 47.9º and the water is 59.7º.  Low tide was at 6:00am +0.1' and high tide follows at 12:21pm +3.2'.  We have a SW swell out of 222º at 3.3' and it was 2' to 3' and some smooth little zippers sliding along the Office (#1) D own in Mexico (where he's hiding out until next Monday) Don Congrejó shows who's got the bigger claw (#2).  In a "pinch" we're hanging with Capitán Donaldo... W e started out with Maggie in the cab, but an hour and a half later it was Enrique in a rented "lancha" across the Lagunas de Chacahua to our destination on the island.   Enrique kept it at around 20kts and it was all you could do to keep your eyelashes from beating the crap out of you eyes.  A young lady joined us for the voyage and it took an entire eight minutes before Enrique had her back on the rear thwart to keep him company for the ride...  It&#

C loudy today and it looks exactly how spring is supposed to look in the South Bay.  Visibility was around 7 miles and winds were persistent out of the SW by 3 to 5kts.  The sea surface was bumped and a bit rugged.  The air temperature was 57.0º and the water is 60.6º.  High tide was at 10:57am +4.0' and low tide will be at 4:24pm +1.3'.  We had a west swell this morning out of 265º at 3.9' and it was 3' to 5' and we cou

A fine morning with a few clouds to the south and almost no wind.  The air temp started out cool at 48.9º, but warmed quickly.  The water is 57.4º and let's hope things are warming up a bit.  Low tide was at 7:00am -0.4' and high tide followed at 1:21pm +3.5'.  Despite the tide we had some nice lines coming through (#2) and it was right around 3', bending that SSW swell around from 200º.
