Redeye Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W aiting for the sun to go down, the fam, in eager anticipation, is ready for Joey to start the bonfire.  In the best tradition of Hawaiian Fire Gods, fire twirlers and fire eaters, Joey is waiting for the propitious moment to begin the festivities...  Is it dark enough yet?... A great day to return home with only a few clouds in the sky and over 20 miles visibility.  Winds were light out of the south by 3.3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 71.5˚ and the water was 66.9˚ and ready for your short-suit assault.  High tide was at 9:38am +3.8' and low tide will be at 2:21pm +2.0'.  We are enjoying a SSW swell out of 203˚ at 3.3' and it was a solid 3' with some fuller outsides throughout the morning... Lost Boys & Co... C ongratulations to Janine Burdette! A great ceremony at South High and she continued in the tradition of smart, beautiful South High Grads! O vercast this morning and 2 miles visibility.  Winds were light onshore by 2.3kts and the sea surface started out glassy and bumped out over the morning.  The air temp was 63.7˚ and the water is 66.0˚.  Low tide was early at 5:30am -0.9' and high tide will follow at 12:06pm +4.0'.  We have a SSW swell out of 2.3' and it was 1' to 2' with some waist high outsiders.  The crew was out in force this morning, with Tarzan & Ronnie joining Clarky, Boris, Robin and the Professor.  To top it off, José Barahona came cruising in and showed the assembled group a thing or two.  In this case Location, location, equipment... W e'll be out until the 30th of June doing recon in Northern California and Hawaii.  Reports will be sporadic at best, so escape the June gloom if you can and we'll see you on the 1st of

Abbey Road Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

S ome folks make everything look so easy.  Photo #1 is the beach equivalent of the Abbey Road album cover with Jetski, Bobbin' Robin, Gus and the Professor playing their own favorite Beatles.  Now they want to do one with better production values crossing 11th St.  ( Photo credit:  René Evette, Den Mother Productions ) L ight overcast this morning with ½ mile visibility.  Winds wee light out of the SE at 2.3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 64.5˚ and the water was 65.8˚.  High tide this morning was at 11:22am +4.1' and low tide will be at 4:12pm +2.0'.  We have a SSW swell out of 205˚ at 3.0' and it was a solid 3' with some makeable corners, until the wind came up and mushed it over... Twinkle Toes Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

W e have an exclusive photo of the boys watching the raising of this ancient statue found off of the Hermosa Pier.  Believed to have been carved in the 3rd century BC by a group of Egyptian artisans who had come aground in Southern California.  This is the first verifiable example of their civilization in California.  The sea floor is scattered with numerous artifacts and now their removal can begin in earnest.  When questioned why this discovery took so long a lifeguard responded "No one ever bothered to look."  It was found when they were taking the morning water temps... O vercast this morning with ½ a mile visibility.  Winds were onshore from the start, but light at 2.1kts the sea surface was glassy.  The air temperature was 65.1˚ and that matched the water temperature.  High tide was at 10:38am +4.1' and low tide will be at 3:31pm +1.8'.  We have a SSW swell out of 199˚ at 3.6' and it was a fun 3' to 4' with some fun peaks. L et's go on a surfin' surfari...  Some longer equipment for the paddle as Jetski, Robin and the Professor get ready for the walk.  2½ hours later they were back at the bus after scoring some solo Cove and braving the board biting rocks... A serious case of Sophmoritis as the second year crew gather around Coach Avery to soak up some wisdom.  It was "choose your own adventure day" and it was hard to generate enough stoke to make it out...  L. to R.  Kyle, Hali, Tate, Emma, Coach Avery, Drake... D rizzling this morning with 1 mile visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth with a slight roll.  The air was a damp 62.5˚ and the water was edging closer to the magic 65˚ at 64.4˚.  High tide was at 7:07am +3.8' and low tide will follow at 12:30pm +1.1'.  We have a SW swell out of 233˚ at 3.0' and was almost that, rolling in about 1' to 2' with some marginally bigger sets... S ome of the usual crew checking Hermosa in the rain.  From L. to R.:  Jetski Vishnevsky, Sea Marisa Jane, The Professor and Rasta Pete.  The conversation was going like this:  "How come I always have to be Mr. Pink?"  "Okay, Marisa can be Mr... No wait...  Marisa can be Ms. Pink...  "Well, that's kinda sexist!"  "Well, yeah.  That's what makes it funny." M eanwhile, it rained off and on this morning, steady at times.  Visibility was 5 miles and the winds were from the north at 7.3kts.  The sea surface was smooth to glassy at the Cove, with the seaweed keeping things oiled down.  The air temperature was 69.0˚and the water was 64.6˚.  Low tide was at 9:43am +0.3' and high tide will be at 4:L41pm +4.8'.  We have a SSW swell out of 198˚ at 3.9' and it was just about that on the hill... "Do I ride it or just hang it on the wall?"  These beauties were hand made for Paul and Chris Miloe by Barbara Miloe's brother in the northwest.  They use the ribbed "airplane wing" construction and have plugs to equalize the pressure and get rid of any condensed moisture.  "A thing of beauty is a joy forever..." O vercast and a bit close with 3 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the SW early by 5.4kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature was 62.3˚ and the water is 64.0˚.  Low tide was at 8:44am +0.0' and high tide will be at 3:44pm +4.4'.  We have a SSW swell out of 213˚ at 3.6' and since it's a bit of a slice to hit the So. T he latest "Drop Zone."  You gotta read it.  It's got so many typos and errors that it's almost as fun as the Daily Breeze...  A couple of good photos though, with the Professor's sled next to Eddie Solt's Ford wagon in front of Brother's.  Then there's Chucky, the Professor, Clark (the Meth Hunter,) Captain Donnie and Ivan at the helm.  The staff photo features Ronnie, Ivan, Oscar and Oscar "Junior" or as we call him Yoshi! H appy hour at 5:30pm tonight at Bluewater Grill!  Around the fire pit, unless Danger Boy makes the scene...  Wait, we just won't light the fire pit...  Okay, bring a jacket... T his morning we had cloudy skies and 7miles visibility.  Winds were consistent out of the SE by 2.3kts and the sea surface was rolling smooth.  The air temp was 61.3˚ and the water was 61.9˚, but it's been warming up at the buoy all week.  Low tide was at 6:11am -0.8' and high tide follows at 12:49pm +3.8'.

"W e who are about to get thrashed salute you!"  Said the Professor, as he lead Bobbin' Robin Fenlon and Jetski Vishnevsky into the almost head high surf.  Okay, so it wasn't Waimea Bay, but if you've been surfing about 15 minutes and you suddenly get thrown into those sucking dredgers, it's enough to make you think about taking up checkers...  To their credit, they both caught a few and most importantly said they'd return.  Maybe when it's a tad more docile... A re we not tar, we are men...  "No, no buddy, we're not covered in tar.  These are wetsuits.  What do you mean why are they black like tar?  No, you can't smell them to see if we have tar on them!  We're fine.  We're going surfing.  Is there tar out in the water?  Well, where do you think it comes from?  Why do you think they used to call sailors TARS!  Or how about "Antimacassars?"  You know those doilies your grandmother had on the backs of her overstuffed chairs?  They were there to protect against the "Macassar" tar that the sailors used to keep their pony tails stuck together!  Look, we're going surfing...  if you don't leave us alone we'll inflate your vest and send you out to sea..." H ere we have Boris and the Professor ("Don't call me Natasha") giving the surf a cursory check before hitting it this morning.  You can see it's gray and we can tell you there was about 9 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the SW by 3.6kts and the sea surface had a light bump to it.  The air temperature was 59.1˚ and the water was 63.7˚.  High tide was at 9:50am +3.8' and low tide was at 2:45pm +1.7'.  We're headed for some minus lows in the am toward the end of the week, so no diving in the shallow end.  We have a SSW swell out of 199˚ at 2.6' and it was 1' to 2' in the surfline.
