Another Good Friday Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T his is a postcard of our own design featuring the southside of the pier.  Looks pretty much like this today, except it's overcast.  Oh yeah, and it's got a little wind on it...  And since it's spring break there are a bunch of folks splashing around.  Did we mention there aren't any waves... B y the numbers we have 9 miles visibility under gray skies.  Winds are out of the north by 4.1kts and the sea surface is still smooth.  The air temp is 56.1˚ and the water is 58.6˚, trying to warm up.  Low tide is early at 5:22am -0.5' and the high isn't that high at 11:32am +4.2'.  We have a WSW swell out of 251˚ and it might be good if it was bigger than the 2.3' that's showing on 46221.  We're calling it 1' and poor, with occasional waist high wall at El Porto... O verheard this morning at Brother's... "I knew that topless waitress had something up her sleeve."  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it...&qu

Lost Boys & Co... A s most of you know, Mark Mitchler and Right Wing Fred have been buying and restoring old VW's.  This is one of their latest efforts.  It's a 1973 bus with a few of the camper amenities (fold down table, bed/couch, storage box) built in.  It's also got a better sound system than most of that vintage.  A pretty, almost Petty blue and white - would look deluxe driving to the beach!  $16,000 and you can call it your own!  Tell him the Professor sent you!  (310) 373-7130... 10 miles visibility this morning under overcast skies.  Winds were lightly onshore from the get-go, variable to 2.3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 55.9˚ and the water is 58.8˚, but reaching around 60 at midday.  High tide is at 10:44am +4.6' and low tide will follow at 4:27pm +0.6'.  We continue to have a SSW swell out of 199˚ at 2.6', but it's not looking that big.  We'll call it 1' to 2' and poor to poorer... O vercast remains with 7 miles visibility and a light but persistent gray.  Winds were calm and the sea surface had a roll, but was mostly smooth.  The air temperature was 56.7˚ and the water was an encouraging 59.4˚.  Like it's spring...  High tide at 10:01am +4.9' and low tide will be at 3:56pm +0.3'.  We have a SSW swell out of 212˚ at 3.3', but it's still too much south and we've got 1' to 3' surf at most spots, with El Sporto chest high... O ur sincerest condolences to the Foley family on the passing of John Foley after a brief illness.  John was the archetypical Irishman and was always ready with a quick smile and a story.  He was a great dancer, could hold a pint and knew his way around a party.  John joined us in Ireland for the "Rose of Tralee" pagean

Lost Boys & Co... D o you think it's merely a coincidence that the new "Hermosa Pie & Cake Company" is right next to "Hermosa Smoke & Gift?"  We're thinking, "Location, location, location...!" O vercast and hazy conditions this morning with 7 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 5.1kts and the sea surface was smooth, with a significant roll.  The air temperature was 55.6˚ and the water was 58.6˚ at the buoy and a surprising 61.0˚ at the Hermosa Pier.  High tide is at 9:20am +5.1' and low tide will be at 3:27pm +0.1'.  We have a SSW swell out of 203˚ at 3.3', but it's too oblique an angle and the tide is a bit too high for good waves this morning, south of Manhattan.  The Manhattan Pier  (and points north)  were breaking, but the pier had (no kidding) 50 surfers on the south side.  We didn't even look at the north.  No idea what was going on..  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professo

F ifteen miles visibility under mostly clear skies with only a few clouds to mar the perfection.  Winds were offshore by 4.1kts and steady throughout the morning.  The sea surface was smooth to a manicured brush.  The air temp was 55.2˚ and the water was 58.1˚, trying hard to warm a bit.  High tide is at 6:40am +4.5' and low tide will follow at 1:36pm +0.2'.  We have a WSW swell out of 248˚ at 4.6' and it was a fine day at most spots...  It will be crowded mañana, count on it... H ora Feliz at 5:30pm at Samba.   A pparently celebrity worship starts early...  So here we have Miss Lilly appreciating a rather two-dimensional Justin Bieber.  Our quick calculations suggest that by the time she's 18 he'll be 35.  She'll probably think that 35 is ancient...  We had two thoughts:  1. We wish we were 35.  2. in 16 years we'

Lost Boys & Co... Y ou know how you're looking through the yoga catalog and you think, "Gee, that girl in the yoga ad looks an awfully lot like Suzanne."  And you're looking and she even has that little crinkle in her eyebrow where she stopped her surfboard with her head.  And then Suzanne walks in and says, "Oh yeah, I did a clothing shoot for Celestyna and I'm in the catalog."  Well, cool...! P artly cloudy skies with a bit of haze along the beach and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 4.1kts and the sea surface was smooth with a distinct roll.  The air temp was 55.8˚ and the water was 57.0˚, pretty much refusing to warm up into the 60's, despite the calendar saying it's spring.  High tide is at 5:46am +4.2' and low tide will follow at 1:03pm +0.4'.  We had a west swell today out of 272˚ at 4.3', which was pretty great and the waves were 3' to 4' with some bigger outsides.  Danger Boy and the Professor surfed H

Lost Boys & Co... H mmm...  We have no idea what's going on in today's photo.  Ethan Pezzolo (left), is looking a bit the secret agent, but the goggles, inner tube and floaties kinda blow that outta the water...  Looks more like a Sadie Hawkins Day pool party... L ast day of Winter, for those of you who yearn for the Currier and Ives landscapes and endless downhill slopes.  But that's history at 4:02am Wednesday morning, as the Vernal Equinox evens up the day and night in the northern hemisphere.  We're ready... O vercast this am with 5 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was glassy to smooth.  The air temperature was 53.6˚ and the water just jumbled that to 56.3˚.  The tides are still flattening out and Low tide is late at 11:18am +1.0' and high tide will be even later at 7:01pm +3.0'.  The swell has continued to drop and currently we have a SSW swell out of 202˚ at 2.3'.  1' knee slappers when there are waves, but it's wall

T en miles visibility under cloudy skies this morning.  Winds were offshore by 2.1kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 55.9˚ and the water was still chilly at 57.0˚.  Low tide was at 9:44am +1.1' and high tide was late at 5:37pm +2.7' on a day with little variation.  The buoy registered a SSW swell out of 196˚ at 3.0'.  Not all of that turned the corner and the surf was 2' to 3'.  If you were at Hermosa, there was some clear water and nice long (often makeable) walls. Lost Boys & Co... S o this is the best shot we could get...  We wanted to get him from the side, but some cardinal kept pushing the Coach and the Professor to the back.  There is no truth to the rumor that the Professor grabbed a red yarmulke and barged his way in, speaking in Danny Kaye Italian.  That was the Coach.  The Professor merely borrowed the Argentinian Ambassador's sash and pushed the Coach from behind...  Olé! A lmost foggy, but certainly overcast with 2 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 53.6˚ and the water was 56.7˚.  Low tide was at 6:20am +0.4' and high tide will follow at 12:26pm +3.6'.  We have a WSW swell out of 243˚ at 2.6' and we're gonna call it 2' to 3', but it's not quite that robust.  We've also got the west wind coming in early... Lost Boys & Co... M aking tracks toward where we think the surf might be... F oggy this morning once again as the inland regions heated up to the 90's.  Visibility was around 50 to 100yds.  Winds were once again lightly onshore by 2.9kts and the sea surface was presumed to be smooth.  The air temp was 51.3˚ and the water was 58.2˚ at the Hermosa Pier and 56.5˚ at the buoy.  Low tide was at 5:36am +0.2' and high tide will follow at 11:41am +4.2', not too much tidal swing as we head into next week.  We have a WSW swell out of 247˚ at 2.3' and as the day progressed that moved up to 3.0'.  Maybe some little ones in the morning... S orry the report was so late this evening...  The selection of the Pope threw off our entire schedule.  Looks like it will be a "Pope Francis Friday"...  Francis's, Frank's, Fran's etc. were all celebrating today...  S peaking of Friday...  There will be an "Hora Feliz" at Samba starting at 5:30pm.  The

F oggy gremlins this morning and 50 yards visibility.  Winds were lightly onshore and the sea surface was mostly obscured.  The air was a moisture ladened 50.5˚ and the water was even more moisture laden at 56.7˚.  High tide is at 11:01am +4.7' and low tide will be at 4:57pm +0.4'.  The buoy tells us, even though we can't see it, that we have a west swell out of 261˚ at 2.0'.  We'll guess from what we can barely make out and the sound, that it's 1' to 2'...  Supposed to get better mañana... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... S ee Jim De Carli's response to our photo of last week.  Today we decided to install this photo of the Redondo pier area probably from the late 50's or early 60's.  Hard to tell what time of year it was, there's no snow on the mountains, so it's probably not winter.  Look at all the people on the pier!   F oggy this morning, with less than a quarter of a mile visibility in most spots.  Winds were quirky and the sea surface was mostly smooth.  The air temperature was 53.6˚ and the water was a dampish 56.5˚.  High tide is at 10:21am +5.2' and low tide will be at 4:28pm +-0.0'.  We have a weak west swell out of 255˚ at 2.6' at the buoy and 2'+ on the beach.  You can tell some of the spots aren't happening when everyone shows up at Torrance Beach... Lost Boys & Co... I f you were in the mood for a delicious barbacoa , then you needed to be at Jimmy Barahona's this last Saturday.  A birthday party for his mom Chinda, inspired him to dig a pit and work his magic.  He covered the meat with agavé leaves stuck the pot in the ground and covered it back up.  The hardest part was waiting...  Ah, but the results were magic... D ark this morning, but we had clear skies and 20 miles visibility as the day dawned.  Winds were offshore by 1.9kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 53.1˚ and the water was 56.1˚, being driven down by the winds early on the weekend.  High tide was at 9:40am +5.5' and low tide will be at 3:58pm -0.4' and it's the last minus tide until the end of the month.  We have a WSW swell out of 258˚ at 3.0' and that's just about what we have for your surfing enjoyment.  Get it before the wind comes up... Y ou've heard of dueling banjos?  Here we have twirling mustaches...
