Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have a snap of the Professor mowing some foam.  Then, of course, we have our second shot of Ché straightening it all up!  You might notice that the Professor left what might be considered a rather uneven playing field... H azy sun this morning, with 10 miles visibility and the possibility of a rather nice day looming large.  Winds are calm and the sea surface was glassy at the checkout.  The air temperature was a cool 56.5° and the water remains chill at 63.5°.  Low tide at 6:10am +2.5' and high tide will be at 1:35pm +5.0'.  We have a SSW swell coming out of 204° at about 2.6'.  It was small but fun in the sunny morning... Lost Boys & Co... A happy birthday to Gidget this morning!  25 years ago today, the Professor was counting fingers and toes to make sure she had all of the requisite parts.  She came fully equipped! W hile we're sending out the good wishes, we need to congratulate Tamara Ball and Andrew Flores, who tied the knot on Saturday.  The Coach was a co-celebrant and he started things out by making sure that everyone knew that he wasn't Doug.  There were two girls sitting in front of us and one turned to the other and said, "I told you that wasn't her dad!" S aw this utility vault lid in Honolulu.  The abbreviations kinda obscure it's interest.  So, it should read City & County, Street Light Division,  Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii.  It's got to be at least 50+ years old since this is the 50th anniversary of Hawaiian statehood. A beautiful day in the southland, but a tad chilly.  We had 15 miles visibility under clear skies and calm winds and glassy surfa

W indier this morning than yesterday and a bit choppier, from the west at 7.5kts, with low clouds and some overcast.  5 miles visibility.  The air temp was 67.1° and the water is continuing to drop.  It's a chilly 61.0° (like November temps!)  High tide at 10:54am +5.0' and low tide will follow at 4:48pm +1.3'.  The best news is that the buoy has jumped to 4.3' out of 192° SSW.  There are some waves in the 3' to 5' range, but it's chopped up and not the best shape.  Maybe tomorrow if things even out... Lost Boys & Co... L adies and gentlemen...!  May we present the dueling ukulele duo of Boomfwappa and the Professor!  Fresh back from their whirlwind (or should we say "tradewind") tour of the islands.  On the mainland they will be providing their own wind... C loudy, windy and rough this morning.  Visibility was barely 4 miles and the winds were kicked up from the start 7.5 to 10kts.  The sea surface had significant bumps & chops.  The air temperature was 65.3° and the water was cool at 62.6°.  On mornings like this it's a real question about short or long suits!  High tide is at 10:32am +4.8' and low tide will be at 4:14pm +1.4'.  The ever popular 46221 buoy is reading a SSW swell out of 206° true at 3.6'.  It looks like it's trying to happen, but the local surf was in the waist high range and pretty sloppy.  Maybe tomorrow... Lost Boys & Co... S o, there are people that you expect to see when you travel thousands of miles on vacation, like the Honu Lani O Kei Kai outrigger team.  Featuring the Professor, Savannah, LoLa, Donna & Boomfwappa, they managed to uphold the family tradition of talking more than paddling.  "Look!  There's a turtle!  He's passing us up!  Shut up and paddle!"  Then there are people you thought you might run into like the young Miloes, Mary, Jenna, Paul & Thomas.  Thanks to them the Professor got a sweet ride to enjoy Rockpiles on and some great plate lunch afterwards!  Then, there are total surprises, like walking along the beach at Waikiki and finding Murphy trying to hide behind this leaf - no, wait...  that was on the Manoa Valley hike when he was doing his impersonation of an elephant with a missing ear...  Thanks to Murphy we got to see some of "hidden" Waikiki.  We're thinking that might be his next career! O kay, back in the Southland we arrived to sunny skies and 15 miles visibility with a bit of marine haze.  Winds are calm and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temperature at checkout was 60.6° and the water took yet another dip to 65.7° after we thought it might warm up...  (Of course it was 80+°s at Waikiki - suffa den...)  High tide is at 9:51am +4.5' and low tide will be this afternoon at 3:11pm +1.7'.  The current swell is coming at us from 206° SSW at 3.6'.  We're calling it 3' and pretty fun and clean.  We surfed this morning and everybody was saying how it had gotten cold again... Lost Boys & Co... O ur two photos embrace the notions of:  How do we get there?  How do we get out? Big Wave Dave sent us the first pic.  Honestly, BWD, what's the skinny on getting there?  We wanna go too... I t's really trying to look like summer out there!  Overcast this morning but clearing early, visibility 12 miles.  Winds started out onshore by 3.5kts, freshening to 7.9, then 10 to 12kts in the p.m.  The sea surface had a pronounced tack.  The air temp was 60.9° and the water was 62.2°, but there were some warm spots that had to be 67-68°.  Low tide started off the morning at 5:23am -0.4' and high tide will follow at 11:44am +5.6'.  The buoy is reading a W swell out of 260° at 2.6' and we're calling it 1' to 3' and fun.  We caught some nice little peelers in the lee of the rocks this morning and there were actually a couple of outsides with a bit of push.  The tide floated it early, but for a while it was good fun... Lost Boys & Co... Our first shot this morning is of one of our favorite hot young surfers, Corey Kupke.  He rides everything from long boards to elias and everything in between.  Here he's shown in Ché's shaping bay checking out an SUP fin.  The Professor is trying a couple of smaller models on his 9'6".  As soon as there are waves, he might have something to report... Overcast this morning but clearing early, with 15 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the WSW at 4.5kts at checkout and the sea surface had a definite tack going.  The air temperature was 60.9° and the water is 62.4° (note:  The lifeguards have a posted temp. of 67° at the Hermosa Pier.  Normally we would take that and run with it, but last week they had a temp of 66° posted when they held the pier-to-pier swim and they ended up taking 40 people to the emergency room with symptoms of hypothermia!  Right Wing Fred swam it and won his age group and came in 17th in the next group down.  He had been sk

Lost Boys & Co... W e have this nice centerpiece of succulents and cacti on the table on the lanai.  Danger Girl gave us the idea.  Sometimes when we go to the beach, we collect shells, sea glass and interesting stones and put them in our various planters.  While diving through the surf at Sandy Hook, N.J., the Professor found this great snail shell about 2½" across and decided it would make a nice addition to the mix.  What he didn't realize was that there was a rather large hermit crab in said shell.  Fortunately, he had packed his treasures in a plastic bag and spared the rest of the luggage from smelling like the underside of the pier.  Unfortunately, the crabby fellow did not travel well and didn't make the high altitude transition.  Kinda bummed us out...  You can see his carapace poking out from the bottom of the shell... T rying desperately to be another summer day (this would be #9 by our calculation.)  Overcast in the morning, burning away to partly cloudy and then clear skies with a fog layer hanging out about 3 miles.  Winds are out of the SSW by 1.5kts and the sea surface was glassy to a light tack.  The air temperature was 59.9° and the water reads 61.9° at the buoy.  High tide is at 9:57am +4.6' and low tide will be at 3:07pm +1.5'.  The buoy is reading a SSW swell out of 211° at 2.3'.  We're calling it 1' and poor.  We took advantage of the smooth seas to do a bit of paddling this mo

L ook at that!  A brand spanking new U.S. blank, ready to be shaped into the surfboard of your dreams.  Actually, the Professor's dreams to be exact.  Ché, has told him that he can use his bay to shape it and the Professor is a bit giddy with the possibilities.  We'll keep you apprised... T oday, by our calculations is the 7th day of summer.  These are days when the haze burns off like it's supposed to do and you could theoretically, go to the beach.  So even though the day dawned overcast and gray it cleared up around 10:30am.  At checkout we had 1½ miles visibility and considerable haze.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth to a very light cats paw on the water.  The air temp was 61.3° and the water was 60.1° with a 62° warm spot here and there.  High tide was at 8:29am +3.5' and low tide will follow at 12:30pm +2.7'.  The swell remains out of the SSW 200° at 2.6' and we're persisting in calling it 1' to 3' and poo

M orning dawned as per usual with overcast skies and 1¼ miles visibility.  But as the day progressed we have had considerable clearing and it looks like it might qualify as a summer day (this would be number six!)  Winds were calm at checkout and ramped up a bit during the session to 3.2kts with a light tack on the water.  The air temp was 61.3° and the water is 61.2°.  High tide is at 8:01am +3.2' and low tide will follow quickly at 11:15am +2.9', heading to a max high tide in the evening at 6pm +5.7'.  This is setting us up for some radical tidal swings next week.  The swell was coming from SSW 200° at 2.6' and we thought it was about 1' to 3' with fair to good shape.  There were some fun ones if you could find the right spots... Lost Boys & Co... S o this is how it goes...  We get up and it's overcast.  Not too thick, mind you, but gray and in concert with the haze makes for about a mile and a half visibility.  Winds are calm and the sea surface for the first time in a while is glassy.  The air is a bit nippy at 60.8° and the water is just wrong at 62.1°.  In fact it feels like it's 62.1° in the surfline as well.  Almost everyone is in long rubber.  But the secret is that the tide is high at 7:19am +2.9' and then almost instantly low at 9:22am 2.8'.  This means that we get the tidal push at 9:22 and it goes until almost 5pm!  The swell is from the SSW 200° true at 2.6' and we got every bit of that 2.6' and maybe a little more on the push.  So we went out and surfed those little butt kissers and it was pretty fun.  The best part was that in the midst of all this, the sun (you'll remember the sun from picture books on things in the skyYou had to wait a bit, but if you were patien

You also know that when you haven't been surfing for a while you'll do strange things to get wet.  No, nothing that strange, but we did get in the water this morning just for grins and it was pretty fun!  Here are the numbers:  Visibility:  1.5miles, with variable haze.  Wind:  From the SSW by 7.2kts.  Sea Surface:  Tacked.  Air Temperature:  A chilly 56.5° (coldest recorded for this date!)  Water Temperature:  60.3° (ditto on the coldest for this date.)  Low tide:  7:53am +2.5'.  High tide:  3:47pm +4.9'.  Swell direction:  SSW 201° true.  Swell height:  3.0'.  Surf:  1' to 3'.  Conditions:  Fun!  Even though the buoy is reading some pretty cold temps, in the surfline it's probably a

Lost Boys & Co... M onday's dawning cool and overcast with 1 mile visibility and plenty of haze.  Wind's already onshore by 3.3kts and the sea surface is glassed to a bit of light tack.  Winds will pick up throughout the morning, ramping up to about 10-12kts this afternoon.  The air temperature at checkout was 60.3° and the water is 61.3° - brrr... Low tide is at 7:22am +2.1' and high tide will be at 2:43pm +4.8'.  The buoy is reading a SSW swell out of 197° at 2.6' and we're calling it 2' and poor.  That being said we saw some folks at Sapphire scoring some nice little sliders into the hook of the jetty.  We also noticed that there were signs warning about swimming in the area, due to contaminated water.  We don't know what the issue is, but we'll try to find out!
