Theseus Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

In real life this is Holsten"s Ice Cream Parlor.  But that's not how YOU know it...  We'll give you a hint:  It figures in a bad ending.

Morning dawned as per usual with overcast skies and 1¼ miles visibility.  But as the day progressed we have had considerable clearing and it looks like it might qualify as a summer day (this would be number six!)  Winds were calm at checkout and ramped up a bit during the session to 3.2kts with a light tack on the water.  The air temp was 61.3° and the water is 61.2°.  High tide is at 8:01am +3.2' and low tide will follow quickly at 11:15am +2.9', heading to a max high tide in the evening at 6pm +5.7'.  This is setting us up for some radical tidal swings next week.  The swell was coming from SSW 200° at 2.6' and we thought it was about 1' to 3' with fair to good shape.  There were some fun ones if you could find the right spots...

Photo #2 is the entrance to North Beach, Sandy Hook, New Jersey.  It features a wide, white sand beach, beautiful hot beach weather and an amazing view (#3) of Manhattan Island.  It's a National Seashore and for a lot of the year it's pretty desolate.  But in the summer, because it ends up being one of the closest beaches to Manhattan, it gets a fair amount of beach-goers.  We rented an umbrella, got a couple of dirty water dogs and relaxed at the shore.  It also gets a swell every once-in-a-while and has some okay waves!  If you look closely at the photo, you can see the Empire State Building and the parachute drop at Coney Island...

Okay, did you figure out how you know Holsten's?  It's the restaurant where Tony Soprano is eating when the series ends - however you think it ends...

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."
