A Chopped Thursday On Rye Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... R edondo Coach Duncan Avery surveying the playing field for the "Kickoff Classic."  It was windy, full of white caps and the usual El Porto sneakers on the outside.  The bad news:  The conditions sucked.   The good news:  It sucked equally for everyone.  Still after all the foam cleared Redondo had placed 9 surfers into round 2!  Action continues next week... S o, you've got a good idea of how things looked this morning.  Cloudy with 10 miles visibility and it almost looked like rain.  Winds were persistently onshore by 5.9kts and increased as the day rolled on.  The sea surface was rough with white caps and those occasional sneakers we mentioned.  Nothing like sitting in what you imagine to be the line-up, only to be rolled over by a set that breaks another 25 yards outside.   The air temp was 71.8º and the water was 73.6º.  High tide was at 10:37am +5.6' and low tide will follow at 5:31pm +0.5'.  We had what was advertised as a 3.3' swe

Lost Boys & Co... T he sleep of the  vanquished...  We'd have more photos, but it turns out our new computer is so different that we haven't figured out how to properly download and keep our information...  Working on it... M eanwhile the surf has dropped, the humidity has increased and no one is taking "no" for an answer.  Cloudy this morning with 15 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was glassy.  The air temperature was 73.8º and the water was an incredible 74.1º.  High tide was at 10:11am +5.6' and low tide will be at 4:53pm +0.4'.  We have a SW swell out of 230º at 3.3' and it was 2' to 3' with some quick little rights and lefts that were worth the trouble.  Face it, when the air is in the 80's and the water is in the 70's it's time to go in.  The unbelievable part of that, is that it's happening HERE... S o, we have a couple of days left this week and we're getting ready to take off for points south

S till some swell in the water and some warm temps.  20+ miles visibility this morning under partly cloudy skies.  Winds were calm at go-out and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 72.5º and the water was 73.0º at the buoy.  If you think that was warm, this afternoon the #46221 Santa Monica Bay buoy was reading 77.2º!  Pretty incredible.  High tide was at 9:24am +5.5' and low tide will be at 3:48pm +0.6'.  The buoy was reading a SSW swell out of 205º at 4.3' and it was a solid 4' to almost head-high in Hermosa.  At high tide the drops were plenty makeable, but the endings could be problematic...   T he trees were so full of apples that they were falling on the ground before they could pick them.  Farmers come by the orchards and shovel up fruit f

Lost Boys & Co... O kay, so we're getting ready to go up to Boise for a long weekend.  Good surf today and it's supposed to get better as the weekend approaches!  No report tomorrow, so we'll see you Monday! P artly cloudy skies this morning with 15 miles visibility.  Winds were lightly offshore by 3.7kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temp started out cool at 65.6º and the water was 71.6º.  Everyone is already starting to worry about what to do when the temp really starts to drop...  More rubber?  High tide was at 7:54am +4.9' and low tide will follow at 1:43pm +1.7'.  We have a SSW swell out of 196º at 3.3' and it was a consistent 3' with some nice lines with which to connect the dots...   ✠  "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... W ell, we've got a new computer and the settings are all cattywompus.  But we'll soldier on and see what shakes out... T he legend of Mumbles Barnes continues...  Not to mention Mumbles Jr.  That's another story... C lear skies and warm weather, with 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were pleasantly offshore by 3.6kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 65.3º and the water was 72.7º.  High tide was at 7:24am +4.7' and low tide will be at 1:02pm +2.1'.  We have a SSW swell out of 193º at 3.0' and it was 2' to 3' with some well shaped little peaks. W e have Jetski, Clark the Meth Hunter and LoLa disecting dinner.  Clark has recently gained some notoriety for his culinary creations.  This Saturday afternoon he cored a pineapple, inserted a pork loin and then wrapped the entire thing in bacon.  He baked the assemblage and when it emerged, the bacon was crisp, the pineapple was juicy and the pork loin melted in

Lost Boys & Co... A panorama of the Hotdogger Championship last Saturday.  It was quite a bit more successful than the organizers imagined and some of our Lost Boys & Co. participated in the inaugural event... W e don't do this very often, but this is kind of a special circumstance.  The Redondo High Surf Team is the only team on campus that doesn't levy a charge on the parents and athletes for the program.  They raise money for jackets, changing robes, backpacks and the like through donations from the community (and the parents and aunts and uncles and... possibly you!)  If you wish to donate or see what it's all about, I've attached the web site: https://app.snap-raise.com/fundraisers/5301 There's no obligation and they rely on the generosity of folks like you.  You might remember when you or your kids were in school and you had to sell cookies, work the concession stand or sell raffle tickets.  It's not so much fun to ask, but if you donate you get t

Lost Boys & Co... D redging low tides this week.  It'll be interesting how this plays out for the Hotdogger Championships this Saturday at the Hermosa Pier.  Action starts at 7am and goes until the early afternoon. Don't know if there are any spots open, but there are some great prizes and excellent swag! M eanwhile, it was hazy sun and 10 miles visibility while the winds switched at will and the sea surface was bumped over.  The longshore current was ripping north to south and you could spend a majority of your time trying to stay on your spot.  The air temp was 69.3˚ and the water was 71.8˚ at the buoy.  Low tide was at 5:39am +1.5' and high tide will follow at 11:54am +6.1'.  We have a west swell out of 264˚ at 3.9' and it was a solid 3' to 4' with some bigger waves on the outside.  You had to be fast or taste sand fireworks... H appy hour at the Mermaid, Friday at 5:30pm.  Go ahead, try the lobster-mac...  We're not saying you'll like it, but
