Mustachioed Portagee Girls Sometimes On Saturday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T he girls are the two in the middle of the photo.  That would be Morgan-Maria and Anna-Maria.  Got to love those mustachioed Portagee girls.  Since there hasn't been anything locally to talk about they headed down to Doheny and it wasn't great, but there was something.  Oh yeah, and the pancakes were great and the French toast was so enormous Anna-Maria offered it up to the table...  So it goes... N othing much this morning, with cloudy conditions and a mid-morning high tide.  Sapphire is trying, but you have to be willing to take a ticket and wait your turn...  The weatherman is doing flips and the predicted rain or rumors of rain have been largely discredited. W e'll be back on Monday, but Tuesday we leave to assist Miloe in his attempt to eat a dozen malasadas before they get cold.  Yes, we'll get them at Leonard's and then we'll try to surf it off at Fly's... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

More Than Meets The Eye Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Y eah, there's so much going on here (#1).  We like the shoulders and upper body, but the mid-section is a bit smooth.  Then there's those hips...  As Terri Garr would say, "Woof!"  Wait, do you think there's more than one person shown here?... A nother good day at Sappharua, under overcast skies and like offshore winds.  Doc and the Professor made the trek, before they were featured in the now famous "Peanut Butter & Jelly" film.  It must be jelly because jam don't shake like that.  The air temp was 59.9º and the water is 68.5º.  High tide is up at 9:15am +5.7' and low tide is way down at 3:08pm +0.5'.  The moon is full tonight and don't miss taking a look.  We have a west swell out of 262º at 3.6' and it was 3' to 4' with some shapely outsides.  Hermosa continues to be reluctant, but we'll be sending out missives in the morning... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professo

Wiki Wacki Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Do you know how many Wiki Wackers you have to drink to get three hats?  Neither do we, but it's at least three, because we got three hats.  (#1) Are our hula dancers with Lina modeling the first of the three hats.  Needless to say they were fabulous on all three girls.  We have Riley, Milly and Lina... Kinda big this morning under hazy skies and 5 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore at 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 58.8° and the water is 68.0°.  High tide was at 8:46am +5.3' and low tide is at 2:24pm +1.1'.  There's a WSW out of 251° coming in at 4.6' and it was 4' to 6'with some real bombers on the inside.  First real waves in a while😎. ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... O ur "Dive Master" Ms. LoLa (#1), heading to the kelp beds on eastern Catalina...  Spent a great day on the island with, Ginny, Milly, Lina and Riley, snorking the area just beyond Descanso Beach.  The water was a little chilly at 66º, but the crew suited up and made a couple of forays into the forest.  Thanks to Sancho, we caught some great underwater shots of the girls.  The afternoon was capped with ice cream for everyone and a green flash on the way home!  It appears that this is turning into an annual event so, get your pencils ready... A beautiful morning with hazy sun and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were light offshore, 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a fall-ish 59.9º and the air is likewise cool at 66.9º.  It broke though high tide at 8:19am +4.8' and low tide was at 1:36pm +1.8'.  We have a WSW swell out of 259º at 3.0' and it was like that with a couple of thicker outsides.  Forecast is saying the same for th

Lost Boys & Co... O kay, you know who you are!  NOW you can say you were in an award winning film.  Yes, Anna Wilder-Than-Burns, took home the "BEST DIRECTOR" award (#1) out of a slew of excellent films, including "Savage Waters" by Mikey Corker.  A Richard Yelland film, he's the guy who did "Chasing the Lotus" about Dick Brewer and Gerry Lopez and "Wade in the Water" a David Messfin film about black surfing and aquatic culture.  A tough crowd and Anna should be pretty stoked!  The rest of the Familia sure is! O vercast this morning with 10 miles visibility.  No wind and calm seas.  Air temp 59.9° and the water is 68.2°.  High tide at 10:16am +5.0' and low tide follows at 4:08pm +1.2'.  Even though there's a 2.3' SSW swell it's flat and then some... As you can see the surf is a bit better than it has been at home. T he air was 74° and the water is 75.5°.  Rain throughout the night, but partly cloudy during the day.  Surf was 3' to 4', but looking a bit brown from the evening's runoff.  We chose to take a bike ride and explore Roanoke Island site of the lost Roanoke colony.  Nope, no sign of anyone... I f you're a Wordler™ or a NYT Mini-Crossword™ devotee, we would like to abuse anyone that believes the Professor bought off Will Short today on the clues and answers.  We're just letting the coincidence be... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

More Questions Than Answers Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... S omeday Hermosa is going to have waves and we'll all be so surprised we won't know what to do.  This morning the Redondo team was out (#1) and they were making the most of the bad conditions and actually making it look good.  The squad brought them back to reality when we went out and just tried avoid being knuckled by the shorebreak... C loudy with about 5 miles visibility.  Winds were straight offshore by 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth (until it hit the sand and then it turned inside-out.)  The air was 66.9º and the water was a nice 70.2º.  High tide was at 9:40am +4.7' and low tide is at 3:06pm +1.7'.  We have some wind on the outer waters, so it's a SSW swell out of 205º at 3.3'.  It was 3' to 4' and breaking off the end of the loading dock... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... M aybe the most photographed sunset of the year, last evening was something to behold.  To top it off, there was a rainbow to the east that offset the darkening sky.  Quite a show! C lear skies and calm winds this morning!  The sea surface had a bit of residual bump from last night, but it was not a problem.  The air temperature was 66.3° and the water is 70.3° and toasty.  High tide was at 9:53am +4.5' and low tide will be at 2:36pm +2.0'.  It's a straight west swell out of 271° at 3.6' and that's what it was for your surfing pleasure! Let The Mystery Be Monday Surf & Culture Report

The air was muggy and warm at 68.0º and the water is nice at 70.5º.  High tide at 9:05am +4.4' and low tide is at 2:08pm +2.3'.  We have a 3.3' SSW swell out of 196º and it was like that, but breaking on the sand.  Basically for the flexible and committed... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Appearances May Differ Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... A ppearances may differ and this (#1) is how we look to Miss Scarlett, 7 years old...  She nailed the Professor on his surfboard and LoLa with her bicycle.  We also love the clouds, very expressionistic... And there were clouds this morning with 10miles visibility.  Winds out of the SSE by 1 to 3kts.  The sea surface was smooth.  The air temp is 64.5° and the water temp is 68.4°.  Less wonky than yesterday we have a high tide at 7:54am +3.8' and a morning low at 11:43am +3.3'.  It's a SSW swell out of 199° at 2.3' and it was again breaking really close to shore for your body-whomping pleasure... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... L et's see if we can find our way back to Idaho this evening...  Sherman!  The Wayback™! H ermosa surf was breaking right on shore this morning as the RUHS class sent more people in to body surf than board surf.  The winners?  Michael D'Angelo won the body surfing segment, Tyler Anderson was a standout on shortboard and with right around 50 waves (no joke) Seamus Swift was riding the nose to victory!  A truly remarkable performance. C loudy and cool in the morning.  Winds were light onshore and the sea surface was lightly textured.  Almost no difference between the +3.12' high tide and the +2.79" low at 7:47am.  It was a SSW swell out of 195º at 3.3' and you could render that into a 3' slabbing shorebreak...  Thankfully no one got their okole's rearranged... Tilting At Windmills Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W e were jumping sharks when who should swim by?  You got it, Barbie & Ken!  They were jumping sharks too.  What are the chances?!  Meanwhile, the crew spent Labor Day surfing high tide Hermosa and channeling Cervantes, Doc suggested we were "tilting at windmills."  We're not sure Cervantes used that exact phrase, but he meant that Don Quixoté was fighting imaginary enemies.  Doc maintained we were trying to ride imaginary waves.  But like Quixoté, our hearts were in the right place... 10 miles visibility under cloudy skies.  Winds were fluky and the sea surface was lightly textured.  The air temperature was 65.3º and the water is 69.3º and needs a bit more sun.  Low tide was at 7:03am +2.2' and high tide will be at 1:43pm +5.4'.  We have a SSW swell out of 192º at 3.9' and it was a solid 3', but you had to be patient.  It was another Sapphy day and was great for a 30 minute window and then gave up to the high tide... W e continue our assault on some of the smallest waves ever ridden!  We'll have to check the Guinness book, but we think we're on to something.  So it was ten miles visibility under partly cloudy skies and winds were offshore by 5 to 7kts.  The3 air temp was 63.9º and the water was 70.7º at the ever popular #46221 Santa Monica Buoy.  High tide was at 11:01am +5.5' and low tide follows at 4:52pm +0.7'.  It turns out we observed that low tide and even with the afternoon south wind howling around 10kts, Sapphire still looked fairly smooth.  We had a south swell out o
