Full Scale Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... S ome little snappers this morning (#1) as they cancelled the contest for lack of swell.  Maybe the only problem is that they forgot to look.  That happens...  But the wind was offshore by 2 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was bracing at 39.7º (not freezing as Boomfwappa pointed out from Colorado at 24º frigid foaming degrees.)  The water was a relatively warm 57.4º, but cool to the touch.  High tide was early at 4:04am +5.2' and low tide followed at 12:00pm -0.5'.  We have a weak SW swell out of 233º at 2.3' and it was 2' to 3' and you needed to play the inside-out game to catch'em early and avoid the sand bars that were walling them up on the inside... ( A ctively copying a critical essay from the New Yorker inserting our own art and p.o.v. Based on the extravagant description of a piece of relatively obscure Dadaist art.  We don't know if this is plagiarism, humor or copying.  In all honesty we wish we could write li

Lost Boys & Co... C old enough to give you the fantods this morning as the thermometer dipped to 39º on the lanai here at the Mar y Fuego towers, where we've posted up for the next week.  We can see the surf (#1) from our perch, but no Perch.  The water temp is a wind driven 57.6º and cold to the touch and we've got 20+ miles visibility.  Winds at checkout were 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  Low tide was at 10:52am +0.1' and high tide follows late at 6:12pm +2.9'.  There was a west swell out of 261º at 3.0' and it was 1' to 3' and crashy with the lowering tide... C ontest mañana pitting Peninsula against the home team (Redondo Union) at the Hermosa Pier.  Horn blows at 6:30am!  Extra points for navigating the ice flows... H ere (#2) we have the Jersey/Hermosa connection, featuring Doc ? (Exit 131), Rasta Pete (Exit 100), J.P. (Exit 36) and Jetski (No Exit).  The Professor snapped this shot and asked to be credited with Exit 148... ✠ "Whe

Lost Boys & Co... S now was coming down in these big soft flakes (#1) flocking the entire landscape in Currier & Ives drifts.  We hot tubbed on this day because visibility on the mountain was close to zero.  Made for some fine lacy trees (#2) though... H azy sun this morning with the wind already blowing out of the west by 11.5kts.  The sea surface is predictably chopped and the air temperature is 51.0º.  The water is 58.8º, but this wind might drive the temp down a bit.  Low tide is at 7:37am +1.0' and high tide will be at 1:25pm +2.9'.  So the result of all this wind is a west swell out of 268º at 4.6', being blown down to 3' to 5'.  It must be pretty close to have such a short period swell and it might still be blowing mañana... T his pic (#3) describes how crowded the slopes were...  Not so much... S o the crew bids Idaho a goodbye (Maharishi, Buck, Anaconda Burke, LoLa and the Professor) and let's see what's cracking in the morning! ✠ "When

Lost Boys & Co... Y es, we're back with news from the north and all points in between, but let's start with the local scene!  (#1)  You can see from the pic, that we had about 10 miles visibility and the skies were partly cloudy.  Wind started out offshore and quickly changed to whitecaps and slush...  The air temperature was 52.3º and the water is 58.8º.  Low tide was at 6:16am +1.1' and high tide was trying at 12:02pm +3.6'.  The advertised swell was 2.3' out of the west 264º, but it was hitting the sandbar and jacking to 4'+ and ledgy to dropping you off the loading dock...  Doc summed it up best on the paddle out, "*#@&^%!  &#!%!"  T he Maharishi Larking sporting his trademark mustaches (#2) riding up the Centennial Chair at Brundage in Idaho.  We were blessed with good snow and fine weather for the most part and the hot springs were a delightful addition... T he mountain crew (#3) consisted of LoLa, the Maharishi, Buck and the Professo

Return To The Sea Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... A couple of other views of the "Return to the Sea" ice sculpture.  Considering the material, a great white (#1) was a natural for this display.  Then there's a grouper (#2) that would look good floating in a martini glass.  A big martini glass...  Finally the title sheet of ice (#3) and our cue to head back to the beach... G onna be a warm one today as the thermometer read 58.3º in the air this morning and 59.7º in the water.  Visibility was 20+ miles and winds were light.  The sea surface was smooth.  High tide was at 4:33am +4.6' and low tide follows at 12:35pm +0.3'.  It's a west swell out of 279º at 3.0' and that was it on the nose, with just a little crunching on the inside.  Earlier is better for the next week to take advantage of the tide... P rofessor Pepper, holds Exhibit A (#4) which you may first imagine is a fish, then at second glance a trophy and finally the left foot of his fishy sandals.  He got them on-line, of cours

Lost Boys & Co... T hat little pink nose is all you can see of Bruddah Miloe (#1) as we floated high above the snow at Brundage Mtn.  Da Bruddah took some time to attempt to instruct LoLa and the Professor on some tips in the powdery stuff.  Every time he'd turn around, they'd ski-daddle over to the groomed runs...  If you look closely you can see the Professor's reflection in the goggles... A nother beautiful summer day here in the South Bay as temps climbed almost to 80 mid-day.  Winds were off in the morning at 2 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The water is holding at 59.5º.  Low tide was at 11:43am +0.8' and high tide is at 7:09pm +2.9'.  We have a west swell out of 267º at 2.6' and it would've been a deluxe 2' to 3' if there was a sandbar or two, as it was, it was great for body-whomping, but not so much for surfing... " U nder the Sea" was the theme of this incredible ice sculpture (#2) that won first place in the McCall

Lost Boys & Co... Y ou leave your bus outside in the frozen north (#1) and the next thing you know it's won a prize in the Winter Carnival.  Harder than hell to start though... A bit warmer here in the Southland this morning with 50.5º air and 59.2º water.  20+ miles visibility and mostly cloudless skies.  Winds were out of the east by 3 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  Low tide was at 10:22am +1.3' and low tide was at 5:00pm +2.6'.  There's a west swell out of 261º at 2.6' and it was a thrashing 2' to 3' with the general consensus being that if you got out without breaking your neck, you were lucky... T hat yellow glow in the distance is Brundage Mountain (#2).  You can see from the accumulated snow on the carports that there was a fresh dusting of powder during the evening.  On the mountain it was a foot to almost two in the corners.  Good skiing and if you were in to a bit of powder bouncing it was good for that too. Lost Boys & Co... " C aught Ya'!"  Burnsy and Jah (#1) warming up some cold hands at the bucket.  Of course there's always a moment for a facial (#2).  And you were wondering how Jah keeps that youthful appearance?  Well that AND she's young... A beautiful clear morning with unlimited visibility.  Winds were offshore by 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 48.9º and the water is 59.0º.  Low tide was at 8:34am +1.6' and high tide was at 2:11pm +2.8'.  We had a WSW swell out of 250º at 2.3'.  It was 2' to 3' and crashy to really crashy.  The higher tide later didn't seem to help that much, but there's tomorrow! C oming in from under the pole, the crew spied their first Idaho snow somewhere near the Idaho/Oregon border (#3).  In the west Idaho is one of the few places that got some recent snow. B ruddah Miloe (#4) got high-centered trying to follow LoLa sneaking into the Winter Festival in McCall.  No we didn
