Technically It's A Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... A s you are well aware, nothing ever appears to be what it really is.  In this case, up in Minnesota, we have what appears to be a 1' wave ready to break on the beach and soak these kiddies playing in the shorebreak.  What it really is, are ice crystals or ice needles that are blown by the wind and deposited near the shore in these wave-like windrows.  We're obviously not ready for Ripley's Believe It Or Not!, but we do our best...  Y esterday's swell has dissipated and we have a gray day with 7 miles visibility.  Winds are offshore out of 108˚ by 5.0kts and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temperature is 58.6˚ and the water is 60.1˚, although Capt. Donnie told us he definitely felt some warmer spots yesterday.  Low tide is at 8:08am -0.6' and high tide will be at 3:02pm +3.6'.  We have a SSW swell out of 205˚ at 2.6' and we'll call it 1' and poor at most spots...   Rumor has it, that a new swell should be popping up soon

Lost Boys & Co... F ly season is here.  Ride your bike fast, wear your goggles and keep your mouth shut! C hilly overcast skies this morning with 6 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore (103˚) by 3.2kts and the sea surface was smooth to almost glassy.  The air temperature was 58.8˚ and the water was 60.3˚.  Low tide was at 7:04am -0.9' and high tide will be at 1:44pm +3.6'.  We have a SW swell out of 219˚ at 2.6' and somehow that's been amplified into 3' to 4' waves with pretty darn good shape.  In fact, the whole weekend featured waist to chest high surf at most of the popular spots.  Better still, a lot of folks didn't get the memo and it was fairly uncrowded... ✠  "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Flat' Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... J ust like the sign says, Captain Donnie is not going to Ensenada.  If he was going, he'd have about 30 minutes until the start and it doesn't look like that's going to happen... U nder clear skies we have 20+ miles visibility and only a slight haze on the water.  Winds were calm at checkout and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 58.2˚ and the water was 60.1˚, breaking 60 for the first time this year.  High tide is at 10:44am +4.3' and low tide will follow at 3:58pm +1.2'.  We have a SSW swell out of 207˚ at an alleged 2.3'.  However, we're registering it as Flat' (read: Flat Feet.)   W here are we meeting for happy hour?  We need to know by 3pm.  No, no stress...  just let us know... dammit...   ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... A fter a few months hiatus, Urbanos reopened last night as the 6th St. Tavern.  Just luck that we were in the area and dropped in.  Met up with Mike Leko and he gave us the lowdown on the new concept.  Simply put:  Great drinks and amazing bar food.  It's like not even bar food.  LoLa had cured salmon on toast (cured in-house) and the Professor had to share a club sandwich which featured duck confit, ham, field greens, and some kinda designer mustard.  He claimed it was the best sandwich he had ever eaten.  Dude, we gotta go!  (Corner of 6th & Hope.) M ore spring in that weather with few clouds and maybe 10 miles visibility under a hazy sun.  Winds were calm at 7am and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 58.5˚ and the water is waxing hopeful at 59.7˚ (can 60 be far away?)  High tide was at 9:56am +4.4' and low tide will follow at 3:21pm +0.9'.  We still have a SSW swell out of 206˚ at 2.3' and it's not even breaking at high ti

Bay with overcast skies trying to drop a bit of drizzle and 6 miles visibility.  Winds are variable, but predominantly from the north by 3.3kts and the sea surface is sporting a bit of early morning cat's paw.  The air temperature was 58.2˚ and the water was 59.5˚.  High tide is at 9:10am +4.5' and low tide will be at 2:46pm +0.7'.  A south swell out of 192˚ at 2.6' and since it ain't gonna wrap around anything from that direction it's flat.  Flat...   ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Telemarketing Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T oday's photo is subtle, but you're just the kind of person who'll get what's going on...  Notice anything unusual?   O vercast and 5 gray miles visibility.  Winds were out of the NW, E, S and calm and the sea surface still managed to have a light nap going on.  The air temperature was 58.3˚ and the water was a surprising 59.7˚ after that sunny weekend.  High tide is at 8:25am +4.5' and low tide will be at 2:13pm +0.6'.  We have a south swell out of 186˚ at 2.6' and since we don't face remotely in that direction it was 1' and poor. F irst we should apologize for the small photo.  If you'll notice in the distance the steam from the electric plant at El Porto is going offshore.  Now look at the flag on the end of the Hermosa Pier...  it's going onshore!  It's like it's two different places!  Well, okay... it actually is two different places, but it seemed funny to see it like that.  About 15 minutes later the s

Lost Boys & Co... F or whatever reason, known only to Yahoo or the web or to our inherent inabilities, we were unable to post a photo today.  Better luck tomorrow...  Although if you see a photo, it's what it looks like to Juan and Oscar... A fter a brilliant weekend we woke up to the foggies this morning with overcast skies and 5 miles visibility.  Winds started out of the east by 2.9kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 58.1˚ and the water was 58.6˚ and you wouldn't mistake either of those for warm...  High tide is at 7:40am +4.3' and low tide will be at 1:41pm +0.5'.  We have a weak SSW swell out of 200˚ true at 2.3' and that means 1' to 2' waves, if you're lucky... ✠  "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... B oy, did we catch hell about "Lumpy" Rutherford...  Well deserved though... C lear skies and 20+ miles visibility with winds out of the NE by 9.5kts.  The sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 64.8˚ and the water is 56.8˚, as we wait for the sun to warm things up.  Low tide is late at 11:03am +0.8' and high tide is later at 6:24pm +3.5'.  We have a SSW swell out of 198˚ at 3.0', but it's not exactly coming around the bend, so we've got 1' to 2' conditions and hoping that tomorrow bumps things up a bit... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

An Eddie Haskell Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I n mid-century 20th Century America we can think of no more iconic figure than Eddie Haskell.  He was the archetypal insincere flatterer and when someone said you were "...being sooo Eddie Haskell!" you knew you were busted.  His real name is Ken Osmond and he finally got out of show-biz and became a motor cop.  Can you imagine being pulled over by Eddie Haskell? C lear this morning with that persistent wind out of the north at 5.3kts.   The sea surface is a bit chopped up, but not really out of control.  The air temperature at checkout was 53.0˚ and the water is 57.4˚.  Low tide at 9:54am +0.8' and high tide will be at 5:47pm +3.2'.  We have an oblique SSW swell out of 201˚ at 4.3', but it's not really hitting us at the best angle and we'll give it a 3'.  It's supposed to be offshore and Santa Ana conditions, but someone forgot to aim the wind machine in the right direction.  Maybe tomorrow...  ✠ "When the surf breaks,

Lost Boys & Co... T imbuktu.  It's on our wish list.  Presently impoverished and beset by desertification we're thinking it might just be the place to start our own kingdom...  Oh yeah, we're going to need bulldozers... A few left over clouds this morning with 12 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the NW by 4.1kts and the sea was a bit morning sick.  The air temperature was 53.1˚ and the water is rebounding to 58.3˚ (as long as the wind doesn't go crazy again.)  Low tide is at 8:38am +0.7' and high tide will be at 4:22pm +3.0'.  We have a west swell out of 269˚ at 6.6' and we'll call it a bit disorganized at 5' to 7'. S o if we can't make it to Timbuktu, maybe we can head to Terranea or Topanga.  They're out there... ✠  "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

It's Another Tax day Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... C loudy this am with drizzle and bit of something that almost resembled rain.  7 miles visibility in most of the cardinal directions.  Winds started out onshore by 4.1kts and the sea surface was choppy.  But the winds got variable and tried to make up their minds all morning long, even deigning to stop altogether at the odd moment.  The air temperature was 55.8˚ and the water was 57.9˚ and actually got up to 59 during the middle of the day.  Low tide was at 7:32am +0.5' and high tide will be at 2:29pm +3.0'.  We have a west swell out of 268˚ at 3.6' and it's been building throughout the day.  But it was a solid 3' to 4' this morning in Hermosa and looked fun if you didn't expect it was suddenly gonna warm up...  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Fumaric Acid Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Just a little quick this morning, with the low tide and all, but it got better!  Lots... Things started out overcast and gray with 5 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the SE by 2.9kts and the sea surface was oily smooth.  The air temp was 57.7˚ and the water was a wind dropped 54.7˚ and we're just about ready for things to warm up.  It felt cold.  Low tide at 5:18am -0.3' and high tide follows at 11:34am +3.8' as the tides flip for next week.  A WSW swell out of 238˚ at 3.3' and it's bowling right through at 3' to 4' and the tide push is helping things out to good advantage.  Looks like things are good all morning, but early the tide is a bit low and later it's too high.  Remember the wind.  What does this tell us class?...  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

N ot windy from the get-go this morning, but things were still bumped a bit.  Clear skies and 20+ miles visibility, with light winds out of the north at 5.1kts.  The air temperature was 60.3˚ and the water got blown down to 55.6˚.  High tide is at 9:34am +4.7' and low tide will be at 3:23pm +0.5'.  The buoy is showing a west swell out of 281˚ at 6.9' at an 8 to 10 second interval.  Kinda close together.  We're gonna call it 5' to 7' and maybe it still needs a bit m

Lost Boys & Co... I t's a "Peter, Paul & Mary Monday" because they sang "Blowin' in the wind."  If you haven't been outside this morning then you might not have noticed that it's blowin' like an s.o.b. out there.  Let's look at the stats and see just how windy it is... A t checkout this morning we had clearing skies, with a few wispy clouds jetting by and 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were out of the WNW at 19.9kts and the sea surface was as riled up as you can imagine.  That's a "fresh breeze" on the Beaufort Scale and a #5 on the "Force" scale.  In recent years the Force Scale has been extended from 12 to 17 to describe tropical storms that exceed 126mph.  Although it's blowin' hard for us (max today has been 24kts a "strong breeze") there are quite a few places in SoCal that have topped a hundred mph!  The air temperature is 57.2˚ and the water has blow down to 57.4˚.  High tide was at 8:53a

Lost Boys & Co.... S o, you've probably been running around and taken the back way to PCH behind the Bullpen and seen the mural that one of the local artists is working on.  To his credit he's tried to include as many patrons of that iconic establishment as space and time allow.  If you look closely you might find someone you know, like Sully for example!  Here he's depicted coming around the bend in his Triumph roadster.  So, if you thought he was around the bend, then you weren't alone! M eanwhile, the wind blew all night and into the early morning, finally turning around just before daybreak.  At checkout it was offshore by 2.9kts and the sea surface still had a bit of bounce to it.  Partly cloudy skies and 15 miles visibility.  The air temp was 57.9˚ and the water has managed to register an honest 59.0˚ at the buoy and warmer in the surfline.  High tide at 6:18am +4.8' and low tide will follow at 1:01pm -0.2'.  We have a bumped wind swell out of the we
