First Is Good Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W e're slightly stoked today since two of the members of the Redondo Seahawks Surf Team finished 1st and 3rd in the Men's Kick Off Classic Contest.  There were 180 contestants to start and Dylan Morrisroe and Tyler Anderson made it to the winners dais.  Dylan is a freshman and Tyler is a sophomore, so we're thinking that bodes well for the Seahawk surf season! L ight clouds this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were light offshore by 2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was warmer this morning at 48.0º and the water is definitely wintered at 58.6º.  Low tide was at 10:11am +2.6' and high tide followed at 2:57pm +3.6'.  There's a WSW swell out of 245º at 2.3' and it was 3' to 4' at 26th St. for the contest! O ne year ago today Burnsy, won this blade (#1) from the "Pink Board Project."  A little shorter than her usual ride it still took four of them to carry it. 25 years ago SeaWolf took this shot of Go

Lost Boys & Co... It must have been COLD, look at the nose on this elf (#1)!  Yeah, well, we have some hot rum to get some circulation to those nares in no-time flat... Clear and cold this morning with 10 miles visibility and offshore winds at 2 to 3kts.  The sea surface was smooth and the wind chill brought things down to 40.5º, while the water was a brisk 58.5º.  Low tide was at 8:39am +3.1' and high tide followed at 1:22pm +3.9' for not much of a change at all.  We had a WSW swell out of 258º at 2.3' and it was 3' with an occasional bigger set.  The Professor and Burnsy ended up on the south side of 10.5th St. and Donnie showed up and got some rights at 10th.  Cold, but the sun helped things out... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... " O UTSIDE!"  And this (#1) was it...  A pretty little wave, the operative word being little.  Taking a closer look would tell you that it was breaking in about 6" of water and that it might have generated enough power to push a third grader to the beach.  But it was a beautiful morning, with mostly clear skies and 20 miles visibility (you can see those big puffy clouds out on the horizon).  Winds were offshore, albeit 45º, but the water is still holding at 61.2º.  High tide was at 8:18am +6.2' and low tide followed at 3:43pm -0.6'.  We had a weak west swell out of 263º at 2.0' and the surf was just about half that... M ost people wait for Santa at the mall so they can sit on his lap and recite their X-mas list.  Not Purpus.  He hunted St. Nick down and started jabbering at him with his requests.   Not quite sure what Santa said, but Purp's latest write-up in this month's Surfer's Journal was a nice Christmas present... ✠ &qu

Lost Boys & Co... NOW , we know who (#1) we're voting for in 2024!  Our only caveat is that he has Sam Elliot for Vice President.  We will be prepared to abide... P artly cloudy skies this morning and at least 20 miles visibility.  Winds were a steady offshore at 3 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 50.1º and the water is 62.6º.  Low tide was at 7:12am +3.1' and high tide will be at 1:01pm +5.1'.  A west swell out of 270º true at 3.3' and it was a consistent 3' to 4' with some well shaped lines.  Kinda as good as Hermosa gets this time of year... " H ow To Make An Island 101"  All you have to do is look to the Big Island of Hawaii and you get a first hand look at island building.  The first eruptions were about 700,000 years ago and the first vestiges of an island started to pop up about 400,000 years ago.  The eruptions (#2 & #3) are courtesy of Mauna Loa, the largest subaerial volcano on earth, rising from it'

Lost Boys & Co... H oping you had a great Thanksgiving and you're getting over the tryptophan poisoning.  But here comes the real deal - CHRISTMAS!  W e found some old negatives and had our go-to photog/cinematographer Burnsy transfer them to digital images, like god intended.  Here's (#1) of an incredibly young Professor throwing darts and salsa dancing on his 10'2" Bing Australian Model.  Olé! C loudy this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Kinda looked like Bass Lake yesterday morning (#2).  Winds were consistent offshore by 2 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth to oily glassy in spots.  The air temperature was 54.5º and the water is 61.2º at the buoy.  Low tide was early at 5:25am +3.1' and low tide will be at 11:43am +5.7'.  There's a SSW swell out of 215º at 2.3' and it was 3' to 4' and seemed to work marginally better at the lower tide...  Could be3 good mañana C ontest Wednesday at 26th St. Manhattan for the second half of the Men

A Clear Case of Berm-icide Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T he sunset last night was spectacular (#1).  Doc Scale got a shot of the Manhattan Pier that is destined to be his Christmas card and you'll have to wait for that! N ot going to bore you with all the stats this morning, but the surf was small to non-existent.  A beautiful morning, offshore winds and crystal clear water, but the surf chose not to cooperate... M eanwhile the County got out their D-8's and started building the berm (#2).  In no time at all we should have our wall.  All the poor Hermosan children who can't go skiing will have their own sandy Alp to slide down.  Of course this signals the beginning of the winter season and we'll be starting it out with Thanksgiving this Thursday.  We'll be out until Monday the 28th, so here's wishing you and yours a happy Thanksgiving and you should know that we're thankful for YOU! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Bubble Bubble Water Trouble Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I f you needed an excuse to stay out of the water you might start with the outfall next to the pier (#1).  At the high tide it was gurgling and merrily bubbling away like it was possessed.  And in a way it was, with all the pent-up evils on the streets like dog shit, motor oil, various dusts and pollen and the occasional rat or racoon that gets washed out to sea...  Didn't look inviting... F ew clouds bumping along this morning with light winds and bumped up sea conditions from the winds.  The air temperature was 55.0º and the water is a wind lowered 61.3º.  High tide was at 8:43am +6.3' and low tide will be at 3:52pm -0.4'.  We have a 4.9' west wind swell out of 265º at 5' to 7'. B ut honestly, that wasn't enough to keep the faithful out of the gunk.  Here (#2) we have a brave charger dropping in on this left heading over to the pier.  The tide was high and they took advantage of the additional water to get some distance.  Of course th

Lost Boys & Co... L ook at Dane Acosta getting ready to smack this lip! (#1)  After yesterday's wind we thought it might be bigger, wafflier or down right ornery.  But it turned out to be nicely manicured and the Redondo class got some nice lefts and rights all morning long.  Like this (#2) long left that held up for Shane Murphy getting shot out of Aubreyland at the peak of the tide... M ostly sunny this morning with a few straggling clouds.  10 miles visibility and offshore winds out of the SE at 2 to 3kts.  The sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air was a frigid 45.5º, which seemed a bit chilly for early November and the water was 58.6º driven down about 7º from Wednesday's temp.  Time to break out your 4/3.  High tide was at 7:30am +5.5' and low tide follows at 1:35pm +1.1'.  There's a SSW swell out of 198º at 2.6', but it pushed through the tides and worked in at about 2' to 4' with some nice peaks. No Kidding Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S o let's not kid ourselves, the surf sucked this morning!  It was windy.  It was cold.  And the sea looked like it was ready to heave everything up on the beach and leave it there until April.  The sand was manicured in that way that only a fierce blow could do (#1).  How do those ripples know where to be?  Nah, no one knows...  Then there's this Chamber of Commerce view of the bay (#2) that only happens when the wind blows all of the shit in the atmosphere out to Palmdale.  Sorry Palmdale and maybe Lancaster... T o top that the majestic Ficus tree in the Professor's back yard blew over and almost cut off all the power to the Tiki Bar.  If it weren't for the fast chainsaw work of Doc Scale (#3), Tarsan & the Professor (find the Professor in the greenery (#4)) and Sancho (#5), who knows what disaster might have befallen the wild kingdom?  It was MAYHEM.  Think about Doc with a chainsaw!  Think about all of that booze in the Tiki Bar getting war

A Dark & Stormy Windy Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... P ink sky in morning, sailor take warning, as we were on the lookout for any sailor silly enough to go out this morning (#1).  Cloudy and misty and even some lightning across the bay (#2).  Winds were onshore by 6 to 10kts and increased throughout the day, creating some outstanding chop.  The air temperature was 58.0º and the water, despite the wind, is holding at 66.0º.  High tide was at 6:30am +4.6' and low tide wasn't that low at 11:47am +2.6'.  There's an increasing west swell out of 281º, 4.3' at 7:26am and rising to a 8.2' by 8pm.  The surf was a ragged 4' to 5' this morning and the wind keeps blowing it down, despite the swell size... W e were noticing the pirate inspired doors to Brixton (#3) at the entrance to the Redondo Beach Pier.  Both Brixton and the former Beanery have been closed for some time, leading one to wonder what it would take to make a go of those two locations.  The Beanery has a sign up that says it's

Lost Boys & Co... W orking off that sugar high on the day after Halloween.  Unfortunately, it wasn't going to happen by going surfing.   Yep, it looked walled and crashy (#1) even though the wind was offshore by 3 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a bit chilly at 62.3º, but the water is still hanging in there at 66.0º.  High tide was at 5:54am +4.1' and low tide will be early at 10:17am +3.3'.  We have a SSW swell out of 206º at 2.6' and it was 2' to 3', but not deluxe... W e were going through our Halloween pics and found this one of Millie and José Bacallao (#2).  First of all Millie is making the best face and if the sh-mancy dress isn't enough she's waving the shaka with white gloves!  José looks splendid in his see-through X-ray costume, but the kicker is that he's got butterflies in his stomach... or where his stomach is supposed to be... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Another Halloween Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... N othing is quite as scary as a witch on a bicycle (#1), since we've all seen the Wizard of Oz and we know that where the witches are there must be flying monkeys.  We followed them to breakfast (#2) and just as we suspected they were munching on ginger bread and bits of what looked like small peanut butter cups, but could have been carnitas...  Let's go with carnitas... H eavy fog that parted as we made our way to the beach this morning, leaving partly cloudy skies.  Winds were offshore at 3 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 59.1º and the water is 65.8º.  High tide was at 5:10am +3.7' and low tide was almost identical with a +3.5' at 7:57am.  We had a SW swell out of 216º at 3.3' and it was 3' to 4' with some long sections that kept our crew on their toes... Lost Boys & Co... H alloween is bearing down upon us and we thought you might need some inspiration.  We'll start out with something simple, as in dressing up and not really getting into the face-painting, heavy coustumery.  So it's the Professor as the Lonesome Stranger and Jetski as Lebowski (#1).  In case you're doubting the effectiveness of this approach, when Sam Elliot saw this he thought it was a credible attempt... A nother day with this well manicured west swell.  15 Miles visibility and cloudy skies.  Winds were consistent off-shore at 3 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 54.3º and the water is 66.4º.  High tide was at 10:24am +6.5' and low tide was at 5:37pm -0.5'.  275º out of the west at 3.3' and it broke 3' to 4' through the high tide and most of the morning...
