A Solution Looking For A Problem Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... N ot just gray this morning, but looking cloudy in the meanwhile (#1).  Then for a couple of minutes the sun broke through and just when we thought it was an omen, it got cloudy again.  Damn.  Winds were WSW at 3 to 7kts and it was bumpy and lumpy.  The air was 64.0º and the water is 68.5º outside the wave zone.  High tide was at 11:00am +3.9' and low tide follows at 3:30pm +2.4'.  We have a SSW swell out of 201º at 3.0' and it was 2' to 3' and a bit disassociated... A nd who should be coming into town today, but the newest member of the Sruf Familia, Santi Sergio! (#2).  Santi is a pilot for Iberia, a longboard devotee (a John Peck fan) and has a great spot in Ferrol, Galicia, Spain.  We have to make it back to Spain with our boards and trek a bit with him! H ad our hearing checked yesterday.  This (#3) is what it looked like.  Not quite deaf as a post, but deafer than most almost time for an earhorn...  Of course we had surfer's ear!  Tha

Lost Boys & Co... T he morning onshores and textured water have been a little disappointing.  Some little sneakers coming through though (#1) and the overcast lasts until about 10.  The air temperature was 64.0º and the water at the pier was listed as 67º.  High tide was at 10:08am +3.7' and low tide was at 2:22pm +2.6'.  We have a 2.6' swell out of 200º SSW and it was like 2' to 3' and actually some fun little ones as the tide came in... Surfing Is A Crowded, Dangerous Sport Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S o we'll start out with the crowd part of our report today.  Malibu had 200 people in the water, but Morgan had 31 (#1) and they were all better surfers than those vals.  Garrans-ball-berrins! M eanwhile we had 5 miles visibility under overcast skies and onshore winds kind of added a certain bluster to the mix.  The air was a unsummerlike 65.3º and the water was posted 69.1º, but we're calling it 66-67º.  High tide was at 9:41am +3.6' and low tide will be at 1:44pm +2.7'.  We have a west swell out of 269º at 2.6' and it was a peaky 2' to 3' and there were prizes for the patient... T he dangerous part was Steve (#2) getting clocked in the noggin with the rail of his board.  Took six stitches to close the split, but now he looks cool with a scar and a black-eye to boot... T imely advice for pets, weird friends and relatives (#3)... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... I f you want to surf like Christian, then you have to learn to paddle like Christian.  Like starting early (#1), paddling hard and being 27...  That's it!  Works every time... #2) N orth half of the crowd at Jah Morgan's soirée...  Pick out your favorite gladiator... O vercast this morning and 5 miles visibility through hazy skies.  Winds were from the SSE by 1 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was 64.4º and the water 69.6º.  High tide at 6:55am +3.1' and low tide follows at 11:08am +2.4'.  We have a SSW swell out of 3.0' and it was a weak 2' to 3', but fun just the same... #3)  H ere we have Aaron leaning into a nice little left heading for the pier and looking rather stylish in the process... M r., Dr., Singer, Guitar Player, Minister and hot surfer, Kevin Sousa (#4) is so colorful and accomplished we chilled him out a bit in black and white...  and he STILL looks fabulous! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it

Lucky Seven Jah Morgan's Day Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T he eager and curious (#1) gathered to féte Jah Morgan and her seven straight years of surfing every day.  The crowd swelled at times to several hundred if you counted the volleyball players on the sand, but likewise included Nina-Mom from down south, Hermosa-Mom, Husbands, wives, Santa Monica elves and local yokels... S unny and warm for the big day, with light onshore winds and smooth surface conditions.  The air was 64.9º at checkout and the water was 69.3º at the buoy.  Low tide was at 10:09am +2.0' and high tide followed at 5:07pm +5.2'.  We had a 3.0' SSW swell out of 195º and it was 2' to 3' and a good time was had by all! T he Santa Monica contingent in alphabetical rashies (#2).  At times spelling O-M-G-A-R-N, G-R-O-M-A-N and N-A-M-R-O-G, they finally got it together and lined up for a rousing MORGAN! Y es!  The crew actually got wet and here (#3) we have Jah herself dipping on a nice little insider.  Probably 15 to 20 of the crew sho

When One Door Closes Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... M anhole covers, signs, architecture...  This time we decided to key in on doors.  Mostly old doors, like #1 that actually says "Porta Antiga" or "Old Door."  There were a lot of interesting knockers as well, but that's another study... P artly cloudy this morning, with the sun trying valiantly to make an appearance.  Winds were on-shore by 1 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 64.5º and the water is a disappointing 66º even though it's almost 70 at the buoy.  Low tide was at 9:17am +1.4' and high tide was at 4:15pm +5.0'.  We have a SSW swell out of 205º at 3.9' sending in some 2' to 4' unforgiving slabs.  Too small for Clarke Little and too much for us... A pparently in Portugal when you have some extra molding, you put it on your door for decoration (#2).  It also takes a minute to figure out what side to open first.  In a very clever use of hardware, the handles in this door also serv

F og this morning turning to a heavy haze by 10am.  Winds were annoyingly onshore by 3 to 4kts, just enough to rough up the playing field.  The air was 63.0º and the water is 68.4º at the buoy, but not at the beach where it's a couple of degrees cooler.  Low tide was at 8:30am +0.7' and high tide will be at 3:22pm +4.9'.  We have a strong SSW groundswell out of 203º at 4.3' and it was creating some 2' to 3' slabs that were a booger to ride.   A lot of Clarke Little bombing if you chose to go out... T hat rip (#2) working at Burnout again this morning.  Billy Mac told us that they rescued 3 swimmers from that same maelstrom yesterday and it really put the lifeguards to the test.  Billy thought they should have called the boat or maybe a jetski, but they persevered and got everybody safely to the beach...  The Hawaiians really know how

Lost Boys & Co... I n our business (?) we often find the need for disguises essential.  We used #1 while investigating a skimming operation working out of a bowling alley.  Oddly enough when Jetski ran into Sam Elliot, he thought we had pulled off a fairly credible ruse...  Didn't fool the guys at Miramax though... A n absolutely brilliant morning out there!  Sunny with a few Toy Story® clouds bumping around.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 67.0º and the water is 68.4º.  Low tide was at 7:46am +0.0' and high tide will be at 2:31pm 4.7'.  We have a SSW swell out of 207º at 3.6' and it was 3' to 4' and so low tide that it was breaking off the outside sandbar that made it better than an hour later with more water.  Tides are not swinging so wildly the rest of the week, so there should be more water... Lost Boys & Co... H ere (#1) we have a prehistoric stone monolith in southern Portugal.  It took two of us to get our arms half way around it and it was probably 15 feet tall.  We thought that it might be prehistoric man's idea of constructing a surfboard out of local materials, before he hit on wood as having significantly more float.  This was a real sinker and a struggle to get to the water... T his morning we were escorted to the beach by a phalanx of pony-tailed guards and horses (#2).  We expected the tails on the horses, not so much on the guards.  Initially we thought they were pulling us over for not having a left tail-light, but they let us go and rode north up Hermosa Blvd...  It was overcast, which the horses liked and the wind kept the flies down to a minimum.  The air was 63.3º and the water is 64.4º which is pretty damned disappointing for July.  Low tide was really low -1.5' at 5:36am and high tide is at 12:08pm +4.3'.  We have a building SSW swell out o

Lost Boys & Co... S un was trying this morning, but still a bit of gray (#1).  Winds were onshore at 2 to 5kts and the sea surface was lightly textured.  The air was 63.6º and the water is 61.7º at the buoy, but certainly a bit warmer closer to shore.  High tide was late at 11:23am +4.2' and low tide drains at 4:00pm +2.0'.  We have a 3.0' swell out of the SSW (206º) and it was a fun 2' to 3'. Lost Boys & Co... #1)  H ere we have Mike Murph at the mic, if that's not too redundant.  Another episode of South Bay Dozen is in the can and it appeared by all metrics to be a resounding success.  Even more fun if you can run-swim-paddle-surf-ski-dory-run...  Lots of winners and great swag! J ah Morgan (#3), ricocheting off the bottom of a small one out of the Office. Still kinda cool out there.  It was 63.3º in the air and 64.4º in the water.  It's been overcast all week and the winds have been light on-shore in the morning ramping up in the pm.  High tide was at 10:30am +4.0' and low tide will have that sinking feeling at 3:08pm +2.1'.  Getting into the minus tides early in the morning, later this week.  A SSW swell out of 200º at 2.3' and it was about that with some almost-outsides... S unny morning with 15miles visibility.  Slight onshore breeze at 1 to 5kts and a little bump  on the water.  The air temp at checkout was 65.7º but warmed up quickly and the water is 65.7º.  Low tide was at 9:41am +1.4' and high tide follows at 4:49pm +4.9'.  We have a west swell out of 260º at 3.0' and it was 3' with an occasional bigger outside... O ne of the deepest marble quarries in the world is here near Evora, Portugal (#2 & #3).  The water in the bottom is from the water table that they ran into quite a ways up and keep busy pumping out to cool off all of the saws they have running to slice up the marble.  To give you some idea how deep this pit is, yo

Wet Hair Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I n our travels we have come across some weird superstitions, but this one kinda tripped us out.  In Spain, Portugal and Germany, if you go outside with wet hair you will die.  Since we have spent a generous portion of our lives with wet hair and outside, we were a bit shocked.  We asked if this only applied at night and they said, "No."  We asked how long you have to wait and they said, "Until it's dry!" (Implying that we were morons.)  "What if it rains?"  "Go inside." T he food in Spain and Portugal was amazing.  Especially the seafood.  And apparently we were on a "See-Food" diet.  #1 was in Evora and we were hungry from a long day in the sun.  This was slow cooked "alcatra" style and yes, that's a one person size... P artly cloudy this morning and 10 miles visibility.  Wind was a bit pesky on-shore 2 to 5kts.  The air temperature was 65.5º and the water dropped a few to 64.0º.  Low tide was a

L et's face it, when you surf you have to suffer the slings and arrows of the sport.  More like the fins and rails and an occasional nose to the nose.  In Burnsy's case, she got run over by her own ride and it left a rather sporty competition stripe down her back (#1).  She wanted to make sure it looked serious enough.  We say "Yes!" T he sun kept trying this morning and it was partly cloudy with 10 miles visibility.  No chance of meatballs until noon.  Winds were light onshore and the air temperature was 63.3º.  The water is 66.7º and the quality looks good.  Low tide was at 8:16am +0.6' and high tide will be at 3:27pm +4.1'.  We have a west swell out of 268º at 2.6' and it was 2' to 3' and fun for the assembled crew. N o matter where you go in this world, there is an Irish Pub.  Morocco, South Africa, Italy, you name it.  This one (#2) was in Tavira, Portugal, on the north bank of the river.  This guy kept the crowd singing
