Fulgurous Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... B rown-eyed handsome man...  In this case Yoshi gettin' snuggled by LoLa.  We're thinking the stingy-brim took things to a whole new level... A nother gorgeous day, without the wind this time.  A tad hazy but not overtly cloudy, with 20+ miles visibility.  What wind we do have is offshore at 4.3kts and the the sea surface is smooth.  The air temp was 54.2˚ at checkout and the water was 59.0˚, but felt a few degrees warmer in the surf.  High tide was at 8:12am +5.5' and low tide will follow at 2:36pm -0.6'.  We have a west swell out of 271˚ at 3.9' and it's 3' to 4'+ at most spots, with the tide floating things a bit.  Take off late and watch'em hang... " W aiter!  We need a beverage here!"  Tio Ted (doing quite fine in the hat department himself,) exercising his right to a second glass of Chardonnay.    ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... W indy this morning, like in this pic.  Got windier later.  Visibility 20+ miles and only a few rare clouds.  Sea surface was bouncy with a fair amount of chop.  Supposed to even out tomorrow.  The air temp was 56.4˚ and the water dropped several degrees to 59.7˚.  High tide is at 7:21am +5.4' and low tide will follow at 1:57pm -0.6'.  We have a ragged WSW swell out of 251˚ at 5.6' and it's 4' to 6' at most of your favorite spots.  Check'em mañana! S o, we walked out of Brother's Burritos and there was this photo shoot going on.  The photog was urging the model to get as close to the bus without actually touching it so as not to piss-off the owner.  Well, do you really think the Professor would really be upset with a little model dust on his left front fender?  So he said they could use the bus if they included him in one of the pics!  You can provide your own caption if you like, although we liked, "No, you can't use th

Spring Has Sprung Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... L ast Wednesday was the make-up contest between Redondo and South High.  South wasn't their usual self without standout Dylan Ragoné. Seems that he was out on that big day a couple of weeks ago at Burnout and fell down the face of a 15 foot macker landing headfirst on his board (which just happened to have gotten to the bottom before he did.)  He was initially knocked out and slipped in and out consciousness, while managing to get out of the water with some assistance.  He spent a couple of days in the hospital, with a whopper of a concussion/headache and is still having problems with balance, nausea and the alphabet...  Our best to Dylan, but Redondo won 99 to 66. C loudy spring morning with 7 miles visibility.  Winds were on early at 3.7kts and the sea surface was lightly chopped.  The air temperature was 57.9˚ and the water is 61.0˚ at the buoy.  High tide is at 5:11am +4.8' and low tide will be at 12:27pm -0.2'.  We have a SSW swell out of 202˚ at

Lost Boys & Co... O ur cable service has sucked over the last week!  In the last 5 days we have just been able to send out a report.  Called Time/Warner and hoping the tech they're sending over will have an answer...  Please... S o, it would have been a full-moon Monday if we had sent a report.  One of the advantages of getting up at O'Dark-Thirty is that you get to catch some of these captivating celestial events... T he sky is partly cloudy and we have about 10 miles visibility.  Wind was on-shore at checkout, blowing lightly at 1.8kts and leaving a bit of bump on the waters.  The air temp was 58.5˚ and the water at the buoy was 60.4˚.  We have to report that at the Hermosa Pier, Lottie the Lifeguard had just posted a 64˚ on the board.  64˚!  What global warming?  Low tide is at 6:25am +0.3' and high tide will follow at 12:30pm +3.6'.  We have a west swell out of 265˚ at 2.3' and it's 1' to 2' and not looking too deluxe. O h yeah, it's the Ve

Lost Boys & Co... L ike most mornings, there was this explosion in the east and the sun just came rocketing up into the sky...  T en miles visibility this morning with partly cloudy skies.  Winds were offshore by 2.2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 54.1˚ and the water was 62.4˚.  High tide was at 8:43am +5.1' and low tide will follow at 3:13pm -0.1'.  We have a SW swell out of 226˚ at 2.3', but it's straight on and 2' to 4' at some of the better spots... M ike Okuda, on this sinuous little tube, carving all of the vertical spaces.  He's riding a 5'6" twinny fish with these fins that more closely resemble keels.  Obviously using them to good advantage...   ♣ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

A Thin Film Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... L ately we've been having some kick-ass sunsets!  Green flashes, sun dogs and all kinds of atmospheric pyrotechnics.  A couple of evenings ago it appeared that the sun just sort of slid sideways into the ocean narrowly missing this runner on the sand. A bout 12 miles visibility this morning with some early clouds, giving way to mostly sunny skies.  Winds were out of the SSW by 5.2kts and the sea surface had some texture.  The air temp was 57.3˚ and the water was 60.6˚.  High tide was at 8:10am +5.0' and low tide will follow at 2:49pm +0.0'.  We have a WSW swell out of 254˚, 2.6' at the buoy and about 2' to 3' on the beach.  High tide was trying to kill it, but there were still a few odd ones sneaking through... A lso sneaking was a Gray Whale about 50 yards off the Hermosa Pier.  Took some photos and we'll try to run those when we upload the cam...  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... W e always wondered to where XIII wandered off...  (trying to desperately not end a sentence with a preposition.) Y ou also have to wonder if on the first day of spring the weather is just going to tank or is it going to be this nice all spring?  15 miles visibility under partly cloudy skies waiting forever for the sun to rise.  Winds were out of the SSW 205˚ at 1.9kts and the sea surface was smooth to almost glassy.  The air temperature was 55.9˚ and the water was 61.0˚.  High tide was at 7:34am +4.8' and low tide will be at 2:23pm +0.0'.  We have a west swell out of 255˚ at 2.6' and it's hitting the beach around 3' with some fatter outsides.  Supposed to get a bit smaller to the weekend... W oman:  Do you drink beer? Man:  Yes. Woman:  How many beers a day? Man:  Usually about 3. Woman:  How much do you pay per beer? Man: $5.00 which includes a tip. (This is where it gets scary !!) Woman:  And how long have you been drinking? Man:  About 20

Lost Boys & Co... A perfect cake decoration when you're expecting twins like Ivonne and Jimmy Barahona.  No one knew the sex of the babies and it was announced that whatever color the cake was would represent the sex of the babies.  They cut the cake and the first slice was pink!  So it's girls for the Barahona's! H igh clouds this morning and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were off at 2.2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 56.1˚ and the water was 60.1˚.  High tide was at 6:53am +4.6' and low tide will be at 1:54pm +0.1'.  There's a west swell out of 262˚ at 3.9' and the waves are 3' to 4' and if you're at the right spot you're getting some nice ones... Damn, It's Thursday Already? Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S o, when you have to decide to either write a surf report or actually go surfing what do you do?  Hah ha ha ha... A beautiful morning pretending to already be spring here in the southland.  Yep, still a couple of weeks away...  Partly cloudy skies and nice and warm when the sun breaks through, like into the 70's.  Winds were variable, but primarily offshore at 2.5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp at checkout was 58.7˚ and the water was 60.1˚ and 62˚ at the Hermosa Pier.  Low tide was at 7:15am +0.7' and high tide will follow at 1:28pm +3.1'.  We have a WSW swell out of 257˚ at 4.3' and the surf is 3' to 4'. W e saw these pics of a Salt Water Croc, taken somewhere in Mexico.  When we first went down to Saliditas they warned us about these guys lurking in the river mouths looking for detritus that washes down from up river.  An occasional  surfer is just an added bit of protein.  The guy in the photo is 12 to 15 feet long.

Fat Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... O kay, here are a couple of photos from this weekend to give you some perspective on how big the waves were and how far out they were breaking.  In photo #1 you can see the Manhattan Pier on the right, way over on the left you can see this wave breaking out beyond it.  Like another length of the pier beyond it!  It took about 20 seconds for the wave to get from where it broke to the end of the pier.  If you could've gotten out there it would have been a long, long ride, as long as you navigated around the pier! O vercast this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 55.1˚ and the water was 60.3˚, unbelievable after all that weather!  Low tide was at 5:10am +0.2' and high tide will be at 11:14am +4.4'.  We had a WSW swell out of 247˚ at 3.9' and the surf was 3' and just a little weaker than you might like after all that big surf this weekend. T hen we have this beast outside of
