A Halloween Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... D on't send the Professor to the store to get treats for kids.  We sent him to the store to get "healthy" treats and he came back with corn (#1).  Not creamed, popped or candy but "corn."  Just kernels of corn...  Okay, it's certainly healthy.  Kinda rocky, crunchy, but healthy... S mokey skies and 10 miles visibility this morning.  Winds were strong off from 9 to 12kts and the sea surface remained smooth.  The air was a chilly 46.9 and the water has dipped below the magic 65 to 64.4.  High tide was at 11:28am +5.0' and low tide follows at 6:51pm -0.2' just in time to run aground in your pirate costume.  We have a weird SSW swell out of 206º at 2.3', but it wasn't that big in Hermosa.  We should have taken our cue from the Contest this morning and surfed El Porto... I n #2 we have this really scary teenager with her even scarier doll.  She's actually a very nice girl who is a sophomore at Crossroads School and is a f

Lost Boys & Co... T here was a great lecture last night at the Redondo Public Library, by historian and lifeguard Art Verge.  The subject was George Freeth, surfer, lifeguard and iconic waterman.  Verge had slides and a six minute film of Freeth himself in action demonstrating a rescue.  It was a night filled with a lot of memories and really featured Redondo Beach in the telling... #1 Is a photo of Freeth with the Congressional Medal for his rescue of 11 fishermen when their boat was dashed on the breakwater off Venice Beach (he was in the cold December water for almost three hours.)  It also recounts his work in creating lifesaving equipment and establishing a lifeguard service. T his morning was cool and sunny at check-out with the air temperature around 50 and the water at 65.7.  Visibility was 10 miles under that red hazy sun, being fed by the local fires.  Winds were out of the east by 9kts and the sea surface was smooth.  High tide was at 10:50am +6.4' and low tide will

Tunnel Vision Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... I t was cool here in the Southland this morning as we registered 51 degrees here on the Mar Y Fuego Chhabria Tower overlooking Hermosa Bay as we checked out the surf.  But we haven't seen anything quite so spectacular as this tree (#1) in Eagle, Idaho (with Anaconda Burke in the foreground lest one more leaf should drop!)  10 miles visibility under smokey skies, with fires still smoldering in various locations.  Winds weren't as fierce here as in some parts, but it was 6.5kts offshore and the sea surface was smooth.  The water temperature is 66.0, but felt warmer with that chilly air.  High tide was at 10:14am +6.6' and low tide will be at 5:07pm -0.7'.  We have a weak SSW swell out of 198º at 2.6' and it was almost that big and breaking way too close to shore...  If you can grab the video (courtesy of René Evette) we attached (#4) you can see the Professor negotiate a quick jump to the beach... M eanwhile, Mr. Christian, everyone's boyfri

Moth-eaten Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... #1 Could be several things:  A.  The Professor installed a new AC unit in the bus.  B. He's going almost 200mph with the windows down.  C.  He's just in his usual hurry to check out the surf... S mokey skies this morning and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were variable, but mostly from the SW at 3 - 5kts.  The sea surface had a light chop.  The air temp was 63 and the water is 66.7.  High tide was a new moon driven 6.7' at 9:39am and low tide is at 4:18pm -0.7'.  We have a S-SW swell out of 185º at 2.3' and it was 2' and breaking remarkably close to shore... P aul Roustan's Halloween party was a big success and there were some fabulous costumes.  LoLa (shown in #2 with objects behind her larger than they appear) and the Professor reprised the windy couple and came in second to the woman who had molded herself in latex and turned it basically inside-out.  Third place was Edwina Scissorhands, shown here with Donnie (#3) who had started out

Lost Boys & Co... S ome people have a weird sense of humor.  This shot (#1) is of a camper shell with a surfboard on top in the middle of the 405 Freeway.  It made the "Kook of the Day" site, ostensibly because the guy somehow didn't secure his shell before rocketing out on the freeway.  Actually, this shell belongs to our own Jose Bacallao and it's in the middle of the 405 because the "J" hooks used to secure it rusted out.  Now, how often do you check how secure your racks are?  Yeah we thought so...  So anyway, the bottom line was that no one got hurt and Bacallao didn't get a ticket for obstructing the 405.  However his board was a total loss.  We understand there is a woman in Orange County who shat the entire front seat of her Corolla though... H ot hazy sun this morning.  59º at checkout and 67.3 in the water. Winds were off at 5.1kts and the sea surface was smooth.  High tide was at 7:29am +5.2' and low tide followed at 1:16pm +1.5'.

Wind Borne Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have a portrait of some of our Hermosa Streakers.  From L. to R. there's Mr. Christian, Blakers, the Professor, Jah Morgan and Lena...  When "All streakers" were asked to line up for their photo, there was some question about whether this would be sans wetsuits.  Turns out the streak was referring to the 30 Day Streak and not the naked running sort...  Glad that got cleared up!  The Professor and staff photog, René Evette (#2) celebrate day number 7 for the Professor.  We're hoping the surf comes up a bit for some better go-outs... H azy sun this morning for another hot one in the So. Bay.  Winds were offshore by 2.9kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature at checkout was 65.3 and the water is 66.9.  High tide was at 7:00am +4.7' and low tide will be at 12:25pm +2.3'.  We have a SSW swell out of 206º at 2.6' and it was a wally crashy 2'.  Might be worth a look at Longfellow in the morning... T he

A Tactile Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H ere (#1) we have the Professor snagging a little left on day #6 of the "Sliff 30 Day Challenge."  Despite the fact that it was warm he opted for his full suit because the Santana's were blowing offshore at 3 to 5 kts.  The sea surface was smooth.  At checkout the air temperature was already 72.3 and the early morning sea temperature was 66.9.  High tide was at 6:32am +4.2' and low tide was at 11:22am +3.0'.  The swell is from the SSW at 198º and it's 3.0'.  Being a tad oblique, we had 2' waves (as shown) and things kinda languished throughout the day... S ome picturesque coves along this stretch of the coast in Washington.  This particular spot (#2) is often home to fairly large swells, but the surfable waves usually come in at about 271º on the sandy beaches... T he Professor calls for backup from his hiding place in this burned out tree (#3).  "Send lawyers, guns and money..." P atrick Malloy's this Friday for La

Lost Boys & Co... #1 We have Jah-Morgan and the Professor as he embarks on his 30 day #sliffsurfchallenge... Of course Jah has been hitting the water everyday for over 1500 days, but every little bit helps!  Now, you could do the same thing.  If the Professor is crazy enough to think he can do 30 days in a row, what does that say about you?  Check out the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation and see how you can either put some casheese on the professor (to make him feel really bad if he misses a day) or just make a donation to help this worthwhile cause.  (The JMMF Ocean Therapy program combines occupational and recreational therapies with the sport of surfing in the healing environment of the ocean. Lost Boys & Co... U ndeniable Edward Weston influence in this driftwood shot (#1) the Professor took on the Dungeness Sand Spit.  Okay, it's a bit short on depth and intensity, but pulchritude...  It's full of pulchritude... H azy sun this morning and we were up early for the Kickoff Classic in El Porto.  Winds were offshore and the sea surface was smooth with a definite roll.  The air temp was 58.3 and warmed quickly and the water was 67.1.  High tide was mercifully late at 11:13am +5.5' and low tide followed at 6:23pm +0.6'.  Tides flip in the morning.  We have a SSW swell out of 210º at 3' and it's been getting bigger and turning west as the day goes on...  The pier was going off all morning... H ere (#2) we have LoLa standing on the door to the underworld.  Local legend has it that this is where Virgil lead Dante on their various adventures into Hades.  It was so heavy we couldn't even peek, thank goodness... F urther on down the beach (#3) we ran in

Lost Boys & Co... T he lovely Anna Barclay and her husband Misha tied the knot on the 5th of October in the gladed woodlands of Saratoga / Santa Cruz.  It was a meeting of the clans and to say "a good time was had by all," would be a gross understatement... A beautiful fall morning here in the Southland with 15 miles visibility and partly cloudy skies.  The winds were light offshore by 2.7kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 56.9 and the water is 67.1.  High tide was at 10:43am +5.6' and low tide was at 5:37pm +0.5'.  There is a SSW swell out of 201º at 2.6' and it was 2' to almost 3'.  Your best bet is to try and catch it early...  T he Kickoff Classic Contest for the South Bay Scholastic Surfing Association will start tomorrow at El Porto, 38th St. at 6:30am.  This is a great opportunity to see some of the outstanding prep surfers in the South Bay.  We get used to surfing with our friends and it's fun to see some surfing

A Bridge Too Far Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... O n our way to the far north we decided to try and catch a glimpse of a couple of classic surf breaks along the way.  #1 is the 'Bu and you can see the pier and a bit of a swell...  It's that hazy fall sun that we know and love, knocking the edges off all those sharp corners... I t was sunny this morning with 15 miles visibility and not a cloud in sight (you may refer to photo #4 in case your memory is a bit foggy.)  There was a light offshore wind and the sea surface was glassy (also as demonstrated by #4.)  The air temperature was 56.6 and the water is 67.1.  High tide was at 10:17am +5.6' and low tide was at 4:57pm +0.5'.  We had a SSW swell out of 194º at 3.0' and it was 2' to 3' and looked as though it was trying to make some waves.  Once you caught one, things got exciting very quickly...  Even the bodyboarders were excited... T he long rights of Ventura and "C Street" are featured in #2 and it looked like it was attract

Somali Pirates On Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... O ur first pirate this morning is Lone Star, taking his groceries up to his digs in the St. Francis (#1).  This is an excellent example of South Bay couture.  T-shirt, shorts, Dodger hat in Laker colors, flip-flops and a very stylish camel hair jacket... C lear with 10 miles visibility this morning and offshore winds at a light 2.7kts.  The air was a very Fallish 55.9 and the water is holding at 68 to 70.  Low tide was at 6:33am +2.4' and high tide followed at 12:58pm +5.5'.  We have a SSW swell out of 200º with a 2.6' swell.  It was about 2' and mostly disappointing.  Here's hoping that it will get better for the Hotdogger Contest this Saturday at the Hermosa Pier.  We're betting on Christian and Morgan to make us proud... T he photo we don't have from this sequence (#2) is when the Strand sweeper was right on the heels of our own pirates the Professor and Jetski as they consulted on the proper blocking of this shot.  The sweepers don&

Lawrence alumna and Redondo surfer Anna Barclay will be getting hitched this weekend in Santa Cruz/Saratoga!  We'll be heading up to take part in the festivities and then onward to Sequim, Washington to visit Buck and Kathy and the Maharishi and Kris Larkin.  Expect some recon from the trip north and farther north...  We'll be back on the 14th... Rosh Hashanah Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... R osh Hashanah lasts through this evening, so you still have time to atone and get ready for the new year.  In case you were wondering it's 5780 in the Jewish calendar...  Shana Tovah! 10 miles visibility and mostly clear skies.  Winds were offshore by 5.3kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 55.5 and the water is 68.2.  Low tide 5:12am +1.0' and high tide is at 11:27am +6.1'.  We have a SW swell out of 231º at 3.6' and it was 3' to 4' and some fun grinders... H ere she is Ms. Wayan Ophelia White (#1), quite justified in having the initials WOW!  Mother Marion and Rusty must be proud indeed... T his is the stock answer to most problems in Idaho #2.  Fortunately, the Professor just happened to have his chainsaw ready... #3 Features Jetski considering the options in the surf.  There have been some good waves this week and great weather... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!
