Back On The Warning Track Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

There was a great lecture last night at the Redondo Public Library, by historian and lifeguard Art Verge.  The subject was George Freeth, surfer, lifeguard and iconic waterman.  Verge had slides and a six minute film of Freeth himself in action demonstrating a rescue.  It was a night filled with a lot of memories and really featured Redondo Beach in the telling...

#1 Is a photo of Freeth with the Congressional Medal for his rescue of 11 fishermen when their boat was dashed on the breakwater off Venice Beach (he was in the cold December water for almost three hours.)  It also recounts his work in creating lifesaving equipment and establishing a lifeguard service.

This morning was cool and sunny at check-out with the air temperature around 50 and the water at 65.7.  Visibility was 10 miles under that red hazy sun, being fed by the local fires.  Winds were out of the east by 9kts and the sea surface was smooth.  High tide was at 10:50am +6.4' and low tide will be at 5:57pm -0.5'.  We have a SW swell out of 215º at 3.0' and it was half that big.  Tomorrow we'll continue the South Bay Scholastic Kickoff Classic in El Porto.  Starts at 6:30 near 38th St...

#2 Shows Freeth with the first board he cobbled together in Redondo Beach.  It is most likely redwood, since Redondo had a very active lumber industry going and it would have been readily available.  Unlike a lot of the old boards you typically see, this one looks to be about 8'6" and has a pretty wide nose.  A lot of Hawaiians used smaller boards than the big olo's that the royalty rode.

#3 Features a buff Freeth, looking pretty saucy.  He traveled up and down the coast, starting volunteer lifeguard services and introducing lifesaving equipment.  He was 35 when he caught the flu after making several rescues in Oceanside and died a couple of weeks later.  That was during the worldwide flu pandemic and it must have been a fierce bug to take down a fine physical specimen like George Freeth...

#4 is our own Jah Morgan, perched delicately on the nose.  She's continuing the #sliffsurfchallenge and this morning she was joined by a number of streakers and some reps from the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation who came to document the proceedings!
