Macadamia Nut Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... O ur photo this morning features the latest addition to the Lost Boys list.  Yes, it's none-other than ace shaper and surfer José Barahona!  José took over shaping all of the custom and stock boards from Phil Becker (Becker Surfboards - ever heard of them?)  Phil shaped a bunch of boards, but José has shaped more than 15,000 himself!  He's our shaping guru, so if you have any questions regarding surfboards or shaping, let us know and we'll get the answer for you! F og was slipping in and out this morning, so visibility ran from 100 yards to 15 miles depending on where you were.  It's pretty much burned off now.  Winds are calm and the sea surface was glassy.  The air temperature was 65.8° and the water is 65.3°.  High tide will be at 8:47am +4.1' and low tide will be at 1:37pm +2.5'.  The 46221 buoy is reading a 2.6' SSW swell out of 210° and the resulting waves are 1' to 3'.  Fun before the winds jump up! Lost Boys & Co... Y es, we're back and it was a fine trip up to Boise and over to the coast.  We'll share some shots and comments next week.  Let's start out this morning with a shot of Dave Dubravsky and Jose picking up Dave's new stick.  Here's what Dave had to say after his first go-out: Well, I went to O'side this morning, and it was really choppy, small, and no parking because of a 9 man boat paddle race. So we went down to Leucadia and tried Beacons, and it was unrideable. So... we thought we'd check Tamaracks befor heading home, and it looked small, and really blown out, but kind of ledgy, so what the heck. Time to get the Tiburon wet. Paddling out, I noticed that it was more work to paddle.. and not as easy to duck dive as I thought... but that's ok. First wave... the thing felt like a skateboard... but it closed out immediately so no turning. Next wave had a little should for about 40 feet before it closed out. I got to turn mid-face, two l

Lost Boys & Co... G ack!  Has the Professor lost his mind?  That shit doesn't come off!  Not only that, granddaughter the second is giving him the double "look at this!"  So is Boise so absolutely quiet that one has to go out and get needled awake? Actually, it had more to do with finding someone who was capable and had a couple of hours to practice..  Did it hurt?  Hmm, it was easier than a teeth cleaning! H azy his morning and almost 2 miles visibility.  Winds are calm and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temp is 64.6° and the water is 66.9°..  High tide is at 11:00am +5.3' and low tide will follow at 4:47pm +0..7'.  The buoy is reporting a swell out of the SSW (211°) at 2.6'.  We're calling it 1' to 2' and poor to not-so-good. O kay!  We're heading for the coast tomorrow and Portland.  No regular reports until late next week.  Remember that tonight Boomfwappa and the Flashbacks are playing at Keegle's Pub in old Torrance.  Wait..

Lost Boys & Co... A beautiful sunny morning here in Eagle, Idaho, just northwest of Boise on the Eagle River.  On our morning coffee trek we passed this fine old building with some great peeling plaster and brick substrate.  Can you imagine what a Mexican restaurant might pay for this effect?  Right here in Eagle, authentic and free! S o not so warm in the South bay this morning.  5 miles visibility under overcast hazy skies.  Winds are calm and the sea surface is glassy (maybe not a good thing...)  The air temp is 61.0° and the water is 66.7°, so jump right in and warm up.  High tide is at 10:26am +5.0' and low tide will follow at 3:58pm +0.9'.  The 46221 Buoy  is reading a 1.6' swell out of the SSW at 203°.  We're calling it a weak 1' and a good day for a long paddle. L etters: I'll be especially interested to hear the report for Patricks Point just north of Arcata and Trinidad California.  I almost lost my life there one big day years ago.  To this day I

Lost Boys & Co... L ook, if you're going to get a tattoo the artist ought to be sporting some outrageous ink to get you in the mood.  This happens to be Erik C. and he's one of the artists at Chalice studios in Boise, Idaho.  He was nice enough to let us take a field trip to their studio and ask all sorts of inane questions about his art. O vercast this morning with 3 miles visibility.  Winds were calm at the check out and the sea surface was glassy.  The air temperature was 62.1° and the water is 67.1°.  High tide was at 9:54am +4.6' and low tide will be at 3:10pm +1.2'.  The buoy is reading a 1.6' swell out of the SW at 218° and you already know where we're going with this.  It's 1' and poor.  Sorry... T omorrow will be our last regular report for the next two weeks.  We'll be touring down the west coast checking out the surf in Oregon and Northern California.  If we're lucky we'll be sending photos from those frigid out of the way nort

Lost Boys & Co... T raveling across the desert you run into some strange characters.  We ran into this bedouin woman and her canine companion somewhere between Fallon and Winnemucca.  It's fierce out there, but she was cool as the proverbial cucumber in her bright orange berqua...  speaking of berqua - she looks an awful lot like Rebecca Re-burk-a.  Is it a coincidence or something more? W e checked in with Dono this morning fresh from Hawaii.  he says that there's a bit of overcast and visibility is around 5 to 7 miles.  Winds are calm and the sea surface is extremely smooth.  The air temperature is 61.2° and the water is 66.7°.  High tide is at 9:22am +4.2' and low tide will be at 2:20pm +1.7'.  The buoy is reading a 2.3' swell out of SSW 210° and we're calling it 1' and poor.  Good if you want to do some paddling or sweeping! O ur second photo shows the Professor on the road looking west.  He took a minute to get out of the sun.  He swears he didn

Lost Boys & Co... O kay, we have the Professor on assignment in Boise, Idaho.  In a few days he'll be heading down the Pacific Coast giving us reports from Portland south.  Of course today he's working on plumbing at the Burke's house...  Can't keep him away from the water! W e checked in with the Coach this morning and he tells us that although it wasn't classic there were some good long-boarding waves at Torrance Beach.  Visibility was 10 miles under overcast skies.  Winds turned early and went from calm to a light tack at 1.3kts.  The air temperature was 60.4°  and the water is 65.3°.  High tide was at 8:53am +3.8' and low tide will be at 1:26pm +2.2'.  The buoy is reading a 3.3' swell out of 266° west.  We're calling it 2' to 3' and poor to fair. Squeaky Fromme Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T he moment we've been prayer for all these long years.... FORT WORTH, Texas – The Charles Manson follower convicted of trying to assassinate President Gerald Ford was released Friday from a Texas prison hospital after more than three decades behind bars. Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, 60, left the Federal Medical Center Carswell in Fort Worth at about 8 a.m. Friday, spokeswoman Dr. Maria Douglas said. Though a few photographers had camped out since the night before outside the facility surrounded razor wire-topped fences, Fromme slipped by the group unnoticed in one of the many cars streaming in and out of the front gate Friday morning. (Lynette was a two years ahead of us at Redondo High.  Of course she was known as Lynette "Fro-may" instead of the vulgar Fromm.  She was one of those English lit. majors who hung with all the intellectuals.  We, of course, were not in that circle.  We were several circles lower, usually cha

Lost Boys & Co... O kay, it's not red tide but a little of that Hawaiian red dirt washing into the line-up.   It's kinda nice to know it rains someplace! A bit overcast this morning, but the weatherman is saying that it's gong to be 10° warmer today than yesterday and it's going to get a bit sunny this afternoon.  About 7 miles visibility through the haze.  Winds are slightly offshore by 5.0kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temp is 61.9° and the water is 65.3° , a little warmer closer to shore.  Low tide is at 7:17am +2.4' and high tide will follow at 2:52pm +5.2'.  The buoy is reading a 2.0' swell out of 207° and we're calling it 1' to 2' and although the shape isn't bad it's a bit small to actually ride.  Good if you're needing a lesson today! B oomfwappa's at Keegan's again on the 21st of this month.  Check out the flier and make the scene. "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!

Lost Boys & Co... L ooks like the French are leading the way again! P ARIS - A Muslim woman who tried to go swimming in a head-to-toe "burquini" has been banned from her local pool in the latest tussle between religious practices and secular authority in France.. Officials on Wednesday insisted they banned the woman's use of the Islam-friendly swimsuit because of France's unusually strict hygiene standards in pools , not because of official hostility to wearing overtly Muslim garb. Under the policy, swimmers are prevented from wearing any street-compatible or baggy clothing, such as Bermuda shorts, in favor of figure-hugging suits.  (The same people who gave us the bikini, Bardot and Catherine DeNeuve have every right to keep women in figure hugging garb.  If not then we should just go back to the Greeks - or YMCA's of the last 50 years and swim naked!  Ed.) M eanwhile, we have 5 miles visibility under overcast skies and quite a bit of haze.  Winds are out of

Lost Boys & Co... H ere's two more shots of the guys braving the cool water on Saturday.  The first shot is One-Nut Mike on a ledgy takeoff at Knob Hill.  He was getting some nice lefts as things got better on the rising tide.  Shot number two is the Professor wondering if there's enough time to run to the nose before he hits the rocks at Sapphire.  He didn't and he didn't.  He did remark how stern he looked in this shot.  Considering how much fun everyone (except Bomborra Scott) was having, he was sorry he didn't muster a smile for the camera.   H eavy overcast and haze this morning, bringing visibility down to the 5 to 7 mile range.  Winds are already onshore by 5.2kts, tacking up the surface.  The air temperature is 63.1° and the water is 65.5° at the #46221 buoy.  Of course the #46025 buoy is reading 69.4°, so we're probably in the middle there somewhere.  Low tide is at 6:25am +1.4' and high tide will be at 1:06pm +5.0'.  The local buoy is read

Lost Boys & Co... T oday's photos feature DB and BD.  Mike Ginther pulled out his camera and got some nice snaps of a few of the boys at Knob Hill and Sappharua.  Yep, Danger Boy is pulling a nice bottom turn as he tries to skate away from some falling water and Buck is cruising for the inside section.  That's his new stick and he was catching a ton of waves.  He says he's most impressed by how fast and far it will go.  That might be because he's got a bit more weight than his last surfboard.  He says it's also more stable in the white water.  It's kinda nice to know that lighter isn't always better! H azy and overcast this morning with about 6 or 7 miles visibility.  Winds are calm and the sea surface is smooth with a slight roll.  The air temperature is 61.2° and the water is 63.3° at the buoy.  Anything is better than the temps on Saturday as the water plummeted to the low 60's.  Blue people were getting out of the water and running up the beach t

Furiously Furrowing Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... O ur first photo is a rather trenchant Buck furrowing his way through the Professor's back yard - literally, not figuratively.  Actually, Buck and the Professor are considering a career in the trenching business.  Burying and unearthing treasure...  they'd be good at it. A nother beautiful morning here in the Southland.  Around 20 miles visibility and mostly sunny skies.  Winds are calm and the sea surface is smooth with a slight roll.  The air temp is 63.0° and the water is almost ditto at 63.3°.  Take note:  That's the temp out at the buoy.  We're guessing that the temps in the surf were more like the high sixties and the low seventies.  But there is some cool water out there!  High tide is at 11:14am +4.5' and low tide will follow at 4:33pm +1.8'.  The buoy is reading a slightly increasing swell at 3.0' out of 258° and we're calling it 3' to almost 4' with some nice outsides and good shape. Lost Boys & Co... L et's start out with a shot of Dave Doubravsky's board.  They're putting in the fin boxes today and it will probably get sanded tomorrow.  Being that Dave surfs down south, all of this activity should have no effect on our surf!  YES! A beautiful Thursday morning with brilliant blue skies and 20 miles visibility.  However the wind has been blowing constantly since last night.  right now it's clocking in at 13.6kts and the sea surface has a pronounced chop to it.  The air temp is 65.1°and the water at buoy 46221 is 65.0°.  Closer to shore we're still calling it around 68°, but don't be surprised if some of the colder stuff mixes in soon.  High tide is at 10:51am +4.3' and low tide will follow at 3:58pm +1.9'.  The buoy is reading a swell out of 234° (SW) at 3.9' and we're calling it 3' to 4'.  Some folks think we might have some nice waves tomorrow.  We're on the lookout! Lost Boys & Co... O ur photo today features our surfing student and computer tech-wiz Lawrie "the Shark" Morey.  Her enthusiasm in attacking the waves earned her this nick this morning.  She also didn't do too poorly at attacking her breakfast as well!  She allowed that she had a good time disporting herself among the combers and that's exactly what it's about!  Not only is she a tech-expert, but she's an excellent writer as well and has done some classic travelogues.  Her work appears regularly in "Yelp." A beautiful morning today!  20 miles visibility under cloudless skies.  Winds are offshore by 3.6kts and the sea surface is smooth with a slight bump.  The air temperature is 67.3° and the water is a pleasant 68.0°.  High tide is at 10:29am +4.2' and low tide is at 3:25pm +2.1'.  The 46221 Buoy is reading a 3.0' swell out of the SW (221°.)  We're calling it 2' to 3' with some nice rolling waves all along the avenues..

Lost Boys & Co... H ere's a nice sunrise shot right out of the tube as we met the morning at Sappharua.  Did we include the photo?  A beautiful summer's morning!  20 miles visibility and clear skies.  The wind is lightly onshore by 2.5kts and the sea surface had just the smallest bump to it.  The air temperature was 66.2° and the water was 68.7° heading to at least the low 70's.  High tide was at 10:08am +4.0' and low tide will be at 2:52pm +2.3'.  The buoy is reading a 3.6' swell out of the SSW (201°) and we're calling the waves a steady 2' to 3' with a little larger outsides.  Fun until the tide has it's way. B oomfwappa gave the Professor some shit the other day about getting a part-time job or volunteering for a meaningful cause.  The Professor responds: I was just wondering what Boomfwappa doesn't understand about retirement..   I worked for 34 years at my last job (and 13 years at various other jobs before that) so I wouldn't

Monogrammed Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W e saw this fine example of beach laundry hanging from the Sea Sprite balconies.  Kinda makes you feel like this is some kind of resort.  How odd... P artly cloudy (with emphasis on the "partly") skies and 15 miles visibility.  Winds started out of the NW this morning and laid down for the middle part of the morning.  We'll call it 2.3kts and the sea surface was smooth with a light roll.  The air temperature is warming from a 64.6° and the water is a pleasant 69.6° with a full compliment of green algae still blooming.  High tide is at 9:48am +3.9' and low tide will be at 2:20pm +2.5'.  The buoy is reading a 3.0' swell out of the SSW (194°) and we're calling it 2' to 3'.  Fun, but a little small.  We hit it with Gidget this morning and there were some nice mellow rollers. N otes to the Editor: Boomfwappa says:  See the retired lazy bug is starting to set in (usually takes about 10-12 months) miss a lost boy report here...ther
