Lost Boys & Co... A couple of great shots from Sting Ginther, Sunday last week.  #1 is Rooster flashing along this Topaz zipper on his "Rooster Fish."  Like makes you want one right now.  #2 is Johnny Siskowik, hanging back and setting up for some tube exploration.  He's had a great winter and surfs Topaz as well as anyone. Cold this morning, as the temps barely got above the 30's.  Visibility was 20 miles and there was some definite haze over the water.  The sky was partly cloudy, mostly sun.  Winds were variable out of the east 1 to 3kts and then changed straight out of the west about 11am.  The sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was officially 42.5°, although our outdoor sensor unit read 38.8.  The water was a brisk 55.9° and if it doesn't get any colder that will be fine with us.  High tide is at 6:17am +5.3' and low tide will be at 1:19pm -0.5'.  The buoy is reading a SSW swell out of 206° at 2.6'.  We're calling it 2' to a

Lost Boys & Co... T hree more shots from last Sunday the 20th.  #1 Has Chris holding back waiting for a little tube to shape up.  #2 Has Ché further down the line, ready to duck under this nice little section.  He's got a bit of the butt-brake going to keep from rocketing out of the whole enchilada.  #3 Explains why they call it "Sandyland."  Left, right, up, down and always really fast.  And fun to watch... T his morning Danger Boy and the Professor wandered about checking things out.  Several high points:  Breakfast with the guys at Brother's.  Yakking with Don Swift, Sandy, John Blanco and his brother-in-law and the other checkers.  Appreciating the changing scene as the weather rolled across the never dull panorama of the bay.  You'll notice that the surf isn't listed.  Well, there's 15 miles visibility and the sky is mostly cloudy.  Out to sea you can see some active rain cells dropping their liquid sunshine.  Winds were all over the map, variab

Lost Boys & Co... A ll morning long, Cory and Taurus were heckling each other.  Then they both started talking Russian.  Well, Danny Kaye Russian...  Then they started doing Mike Purpus - in Russian.  Pretty damned funny...  But they were so into it, that they kept following each other.  They'd take off together and just keep up the banter.  No. 1 is just before Cory whacked a das vedanya cutback.  No.2 is Mark dipping into a long left at SL.  He always makes it look way easy... P artly cloudy this morning with 15 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore at checkout by 1.1kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temp was 45.2° and the water is slowly trying to warm up at 56.8°.  Low tide is at 9:09am +0.4' and high tide will follow at 3:52pm +2.8'.  The buoy is telling us that we have a west swell out of 264° at 3.9'.  The surf is right around 3' at the low tide and might pop a bit with the tidal push.  Maybe just a bit ragged, with the wind threate

Lost Boys & Co... T he archetypal Southern California winter's day:  Sunny, cool and looks 20° warmer than it really is...  A couple of shots from last week, Friday.  #1. Has Cory way back warming up in the tube.  The water was 56° and the air was 45°, so he just broke out in a sweat.  Then we have the Professor bowing down in the temple dó surf.  He stuck his hand out and brought down the curtain in one fell swoop... P artly cloudy with mostly sun this morning with 20 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the south by 3.4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 45.2° and the water is 56.8°.  Low tide is at 7:33am +0.4' and high tide will be at 1:40pm +3.0'.  The buoy is reading a SW swell out of 219° at 2.6'.  We're calling it 2' with some fatter waves occasionally.  Supposed to be some better waves tomorrow...  Check'um out Kimosabé... Lost Boys & Co... S unday was one of those all-time Sandyland days.  Not quite big enough for Sappharua to break, but peaks abounded from the rocks to 615 and beyond.  To top it all off Sting Ginther was there with his camera and got some great shots of the assembled gladiators, in and out of the pit.  #1. Ché rockin' this left all the way to the lifeguard tower.  #2. Marco, stroking into this nice little smoothie - he's got the stoke and is in the water at every opportunity.  #3. "Zico" Andrew coming out of the hook at about 614½... A bit cloudy this morning with partial sun and 17 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore at checkout at 2.3kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 45.6° and the water was 56.7°.  Low tide was at 6:15am +3.0' and high tide will be at 12:13pm +3.7'.  Our favorite buoy #46221 is reading a WSW swell out of 206° at 2.3'.  All of that translates to a small 1' and poor at most of the local br

S ome high clouds this morning with a hazy sun burning through the am moisture.  20 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore at 2.3kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 43.4° chilly-willy degrees and the water was 56.8°.  High tide is at 11:11am +4.5' and low tide will be at 5:05pm +0.4'.  The buoy is reading a WSW swell out of 255° at 3.6'.  Topaz has some nice waves coming through at 3' to 4'.  Sandyland is a bit smaller, but the rising tide could make things shape up to a pretty good morning.  Put on your polar-tech and get out there... Lost Boys & Co... D amn, what a fine day today!  A little different than Tuesday afternoon when we watched the sky start to color.  You could see that it was getting ready to throw some weather at us...  So yesterday was a bit windy and rough, but today...  Whoopee!  (Some nice shots just came in from Vinnie and we just had to run'em.  Like Billy McIntosh getting ready to change directions on this Topaz zipper.  Or how about Purpus covering a lot of ground on this outside rolling through Don Swift's acreage.) A few scattered clouds banging around the azure skies, with almost no hint of the smoggies and 20 miles visibility.  Winds started off, offshore and then calmed for the longest time.  The sea surface was smooth to a slight tack.  The air was a chilly 41.6° and the water continues to simmer at 57.4°, although there were some warm spots trying to get our attention.  High tide was getting late at 7:59am +6.4' and low tide follows at 2:47pm -1.3'.  The buoy was

Lost Boys & Co... P ortrait time here at the LBS&CR.  Here we have Steve "Birdie" Burdett.  Birdie is a man for all seasons.  He's probably best known for his laminating work with Mangiagli (he's done thousands of boards including the movie prop boards for "Big Wednesday," "Apocalypse Now" and "North Shore.)  He also runs "Speedo King" where he refurbishes speedometers for Vespa, NCU and Lambretta scooters.  He's the go-to guy for all your scooter information!  Besides that, he used to work at the Charthouse, knows everyone in the South Bay remotely associated with surfing and is a really good surfer himself...  Did we mention he might be the nicest guy we know?  He actually roomed with Billy Macintosh, so he's gotta have a durable sense of humor... S tormy today, as the front we've been talking about runs over the Southland.  12 miles visibility, under cloudy, rainy skies.  Winds started out offshore, but rapid

But it was still sweet on Sunday when we snapped this first pic of Marco checking out the 'Bu. It was small and there were 9 guys sitting like ducks in the lineup, but you could tell there was all that potential. We spent the rest of the morning trying to find Jessica Alba's condo, only to discover she was at the Grammys and wasn't home all day! We brought the flowers home to send to Miloe and drank the six pack... L ike we said, drizzlies this morning with 10 miles visibility. Skies were fully clouded with rain in the forecast for the rest of the day today and on and off through the rest of the week. Winds were offshore by 2.3kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy. The air temperature was a warmer 56.0° and the water is 57.9°. High tide was at 6:29am +5.9' and low tide will be at 1:41pm -1.0' as the tides get lower

S o, from whereabouts did YOU watch the Super Bowl?  Chuck sent us this shot from his box in Dallas.  He had another pic of two French chefs cooking their hors d'hoeuvres for the assembled guests.  "What do you think they were cooking?" he asked.  "Lobster?  Foie gras?  Truffles?"  "Nope - S'mores!" he said. P artly cloudy with 20 miles visibility this morning.  Winds were soft offshore at 1.1kts this morning at checkout, while the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  Winds came up early.  The air temperature was 48.3° while the water temperature was 57.4°.  High tide was at 5:41am +5.5' and low tide will be at 1:07pm -0.6'.  The buoy is showing a WSW swell out of 247° at 2.0'.  We're calling it 1' to 2', but everyone is talking about it getting better as the week progresses.  Seems pretty certain that there will be some rain in the forecast.  We're hoping that might be what it takes to generate some

Lost Boys & Co... L ike, we're starting to worry that we're using up way too many summer days here in January and February.  How about some wind, big waves and even some rain, you know the sideways kind.  Even after yesterday's bit of a swell, the bottom still looks like a pool table.  There's a problem right there - you could see the bottom...  But week before last, Vinnie got this shot of Leonard going backside at Topaz Bay.  Big enough swell, good direction and sunny skies, made for a nice session... Y ou could see the minarets of Malibu across the blue at 22 miles under clear skies.  Winds were offshore at checkout by 4.6kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was cool at 47.0° and the water continues at around 57.6°.  Low tide at 7:21am +1.6' and high tide will be at 12:44pm +2.7'.  The buoy is reading a WSW swell out of 258° at 3.0'.  Didn't look quite that big to us and we're calling it 1' to 2' in our l

Lost Boys & Co... Y ou know how Topaz has that long left than lines up just to the south of Don Swift?  Here's a shot from Vinnie of Tommy Horrigan swinging around on his blue and yellow nine-footer, ready for a nice long ride to the rocks.  The second pic is Leonard Treadwell negotiating some tricky little splashes on his way to the inside speed run.  He's been waiting for his new fins to arrive - these are a bit too concave...  Looks like he's going pretty damned fast to us! 15 miles visibility this morning as the sun kept trying to pry it's way through the partly cloudy skies.  Winds were mainly offshore, though variable throughout the morning at 2 to 4kts.  The sea surface was sporting a tacky bump.  The air temperature was 53.2° and the water has been holding at 57.9°.  Low tide is at 6:10am +1.6' and high tide will be at 11:44am +3.3'.  We have a west swell out of 265° at 4.3' and it was a pretty fun 3' to 5' this morning.  Topaz got bump

Mylar Holographic Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W hat do Wheatley, TC, Ché, Don Kadowaki and the Professor have in common?  NO, not that...  Stop!  They all wear those Mylar™ holographic wrist bands.  "To what advantage?" you ask.  Well, how about balance, strength, flexibility and endurance and at the same time it reduces inflammation, pain and stress... we're reading from the package here... The Professor noted he no longer has that tacky white scum in the corners of his mouth as well!  Such an endorsement... I t's official, according to the local weather gurus we have had a warmer January 2011, than we had a July 2010!  We knew that!  And if this keeps up February will beat August.  A beautiful morning with 20 miles visibility and clear skies.  Winds were offshore at checkout at 2.3kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 53.1° and the water was 57.7°.  Low tide starts early at 5:19am +1.5' and high tide is at 11:03am +3.9'.  The buoy is reading a WSW
