Wrap Those Rails Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Portrait time here at the LBS&CR.  Here we have Steve "Birdie" Burdett.  Birdie is a man for all seasons.  He's probably best known for his laminating work with Mangiagli (he's done thousands of boards including the movie prop boards for "Big Wednesday," "Apocalypse Now" and "North Shore.)  He also runs "Speedo King" where he refurbishes speedometers for Vespa, NCU and Lambretta scooters.  He's the go-to guy for all your scooter information!  Besides that, he used to work at the Charthouse, knows everyone in the South Bay remotely associated with surfing and is a really good surfer himself...  Did we mention he might be the nicest guy we know?  He actually roomed with Billy Macintosh, so he's gotta have a durable sense of humor...

Stormy today, as the front we've been talking about runs over the Southland.  12 miles visibility, under cloudy, rainy skies.  Winds started out offshore, but rapidly changed to a buffeting blow from the SW at 10-15kts.  The sea surface is white capped.  The air temperature is 56.5° and the water is 57.9°.  High tide was at 7:15am +6.3' and it's dropping about a foot an hour to 2:14pm -1.2'.  Currently we have a west swell out of 272° at 3.9'.  We're calling it 3' to 5' and if it weren't for the wind it might be interesting...

You've heard of "Barahona Airbrushing," but here we have a rare shot of an applicant taking the test to become an assistant airbrusher.  The boss has to come back and make sure the product meets his high production standards, so we're thinking this guy didn't quite make the cut...
