Kinda Weak Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys Exhibit A would be the view from the Hermosa Pier checkout point.  This makes it look almost rideable. It was not.  Sapphire wasn't deluxe either... But there was 2 miles visibility under hazy sun.  The air temperature was 67.1° and the water is 70.3°.  High tide was at 9:57am +4.0' and low tide will be at 2:25pm +2.2'.  There's a SSW swell out of 198° at a respectable 3.0', but it's not enough to make Hermosa great again, so to speak... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Fins Up Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... If you were serious about surfing today, you could either go to Sapphire with 47 of your closest surfing buddies (like we did) or you could grab a boat and get an emerald green wave like Steve Burke (#1) on Lake Payette, Idaho.     Here we had hazy sun and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were light onshore and the sea surface was lightly textured.  The air at checkout was 66.3° and the water is a nice 69.4°.   High tide was early at 8:01am +3.1' and low tide follows at 11:23am +2.7'.  It was a SSW swell out of 199° at 2.6' and it was 1' to 3' at inside Sapphire... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

An Apophenia Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... " A pophenia" "describes the human tendency to perceive a connection or meaningful pattern between unrelated or random ideas and objects (why we perceive faces in cloud formations.)"  Thank you "Surfer's Journal!"  We didn't see anything this morning, but it was hazy and almost ten miles visibility.  Winds were annoyingly onshore by 3 to 5kts and the sea surface had a bit of texture.  The air temp was 65.9°and the water is nice at 68.9°.  High tide was at 6:38am +2.8' and low tide followed almost imperceptibly at 10:04am +2.5'.  We finally had something that looked like a swell from the SW (215°) at 2.6'.  Hermosa still insisted on floating everything that came through, but Sapphire,  sporting 42 rabid surfistas (Kaweka counted them!) was almost 3' and if you had the right attitude and the right equipment was passably fun.  Not adorable, but giggly... Warm Water Wednesday Surf &. Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S o here (#1) we have a map of an area in south Florida.  You will note a number of extremely warm water temps in this area, but none quite as amazing as the buoy off of Manatee Bay which registered a whopping 101.1°!  Now we thought this was a misprint, BUT NO! It was legit and now they're telling us that this is the second time it's gone over a hundred in that area.   They're claiming that in 2017 it got up to 102°, but now they're saying that they thought their findings at the time were suspect.  Apparently the folks in Florida have lost their collective #%&#$+! minds and view climate change as a hoax.  What's it going to take to make all these people take notice?  They continue to dump silt producing effluent into the bay and that heats things up at an even greater rate!   Is this the tipping point?  Will there be no pedaling/paddling back from the brink?  We're in the water every day.  We know how little it takes to fuck up the e

It's Been A Lovely Tour Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H ere (#1) we have Burnsy waving frantically as we get ready to depart Idaho for So. Cal.  Been a nice vacation with warm weather, fine food and great company.  Of course the Idaho contingent will be visiting the South Bay next week and we're planning some beach activities for the group.  Surely some good Brother's time!  Now if we can get the surf to cooperate! B ut not TODAY! Hazy/foggy with about a mile visibility.  Winds are light onshore, 1 to 3kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air is 67.0° and the water is 68.2°.  Low tide was at 8:15am +1.8' and high tide will be at 3:39pm +4.7'.  It's a SSW (198°) swell at 2.6' and it's poor to flat.  Again, it's supposed to pick up later this week and we'll see how that goes... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

A Mermaid Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... (#1) S he looked like a Goth-Angel-Mermaid-Siren, ready to lure teenage sailors onto the rocks. 10 miles visibility under hazy skies.  Wind is out of the west by 3 to 5kts and the sea surface is lightly textured.  The air is 69.9° and the water is 67.1°.  Low tide is at 7:47am +1.3' and high tide is at 2:54pm +4.4'.  No surprise, we have a SSW swell out of 207° at 1.6' and it's almost 1' and poor, but not quite... L ooking like Thursday and Friday of this week have the surf jumping a bit!  We have it on good authority that Jetski will be making an appearance and other South Bay notables and visitors will be on board, surfboard that is... And ClarkÄ“, what about ClarkÄ“?  😎 ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

McCall #5 Friday Surf & Culture Report (Thoughts Turning Edition)

Image
Lost Boys & Co... O ur thoughts turn to that fateful day 8 years ago when Jah Morgan decided she was going to surf every day for a year.  Well, we all know how that turned out, don't we.  And we watched her on the cam this morning still surfing like the surf goddess she is, along with the other goddesses she's inspired, like Anna, Marion, Ginny, Millie etc. etc.  Carry on Jah!  We love you! (#1.  Bacallao, Jah, Christiano, Ginny) T hen our thoughts turned to the conditions!  Like partly cloudy skies with ten miles visibility.  Winds out of the south by 2 to 5kts and the sea surface has a bit of texture.  The air temp is 68.7° and the water is 67.8°.  Low tide was at 6:29am +0.1' and high tide is full at 1:11pm +4.0'.  It's a west swell out of 269° at 3.0' and it's 2' to3' with some better outsides. W ith thoughts still revolving, we read SeaWolf's account of the beginning of the Lost Boys (and consequently the Surf & Culture Report) Surf

Lost Boys & Co... W hile most of us are battling small ankle biting surf, Kai Lenny snapped this tube shot at Nazaré (#1).  He's riding this monster AND taking Go-Pro shots of the experience... S peaking of experiences, THANK YOU to Aaron and Christian for sharing some of the particulars of their adventures!  Always interesting to drill down a few levels! H azy sun this morning but it looks like it's going to be a fine day.  10miles visibility.  Light winds out of the SSW by 2 - 4kts and the sea surface is lightly textured.  The air temp is 68.0° and the water is 68.2°.  Low tide was at 6:01am -0.1' and it's high tide at 12:40pm +3.9'.  We have a WSW swell out of 258° at 2.6' and it's 2 to almost 3 on the occasional set.  But it's summer so enjoy the day! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

McCall #3 Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... We tuned in to watch Felipe Toledo take the Corona J-Bay Contest beating Ethan Ewing with some powerful frontside surfing.  Very impressive!  Imagining, while mind-surfing some of those near perfect waves, that some of our local talent would be right in the mix, including our longboarders! Hazy sun this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds are light onshore by 1 to 3kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air and water are a summer-like 67.1° and 68.2° (springers seem the best choice for rubber).  Low tide kicks off the morning at 5:32am -0.5' and high tide roars back in at 12:10pm +3.5'.  It's a SSW swell out of 209° at 2.0', bringing us 1' knee-knockers... But those 6" to 8" ankle-slappers are just what Miss Scarlett needed to flip this bottom term (#1) before landing on the beach.  This was day #2 of the Professor's McCall Surf Camp.  Day #3 we work on aerials! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Profes

Lost Boys & Co... P addling the "Channel", lakeside in Idaho, riding tidal bores in Alaska, the Familia is making the most out of this summer!  Good thing, because the surf at home seems to be in the sucking range.  Like this morning with 9miles visibility under hazy skies.  Winds out of the NW by 3kts, with a smooth sea surface.  The air temperature is 65.0° and the water is 66.9°.  High tide is at 11:40am. +3.8' and low tide will be at 4:00pm +2.5'.  There's a SSW swell out of 196° at 2.0' and that's generating just about enough energy to let Joey Lombardo push some groms into their first waves...  not so much for the rest of us! S o we have some questions for the more intrepid among us: A aron:  Can you give us some background on your trip?  Like the name of the river, where it is in Alaska, how you heard about it, how often does the bore happen?  And anything else that might satisfy our curiosity!  You can either send it out to the group or send it

It's 8 O'Clock In Boise Idaho Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... " H ey, where are you going?"   "Idaho." "Where are you going?" "Montana!" "Cool!" Usual airport conversation when you run into a friend in the terminal.   But how often is your  friend going to fly the plane when he takes off?  Not so often.  So here are LoLa and the Professor with Capt. Mark Cole, surfer, contest judge and now commercial pilot!  This is not a fly-by-night thing.  He also flies by day!  Always  fun running into a Cole on the road! C hecking the cams, we have 10 miles visibility under a hazy  sun.  Winds out of the south by 2kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air  temp is 64.3° and the water is 64.2°, although the lifeguards are insisting it's 68°.  High tide is cresting at 9:23am +3.6' and low tide follows at 1:25pm +2.6'.  We have a  weak SSW swell out of 206° at 2.6' and that translates to 1' and poor... W e'll be heading north to ride the wild surf on Lake Payette (

Burnsy's Hair Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... A report almost as small as the surf...  According to Burnsy's hair it is very humid.  Maybe the fog should have given it away?  1 mile visibility under overcast and foggy skies.  Winds were onshore by 5kts and the sea surface was lightly textured.  Air temperature is 62.3° and the water is 63.9°.  High tide is at  7:15am +3.2' and low tide will be at 11:38am +2.2'.  We have a SSW swell   out of 210° at 2.0' and it was flat to flatter...  Our photo is from yesterday when it was twice as big... Another 4th Of July Tuesday Surf & Culture Report (Ironmongers Edition)

Image
Lost Boys & Co... HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY! W ell, you can have your Iron Man & Woman, but for this crew (photo #1) they get their iron from a steady diet of Brother's Burritos.  Science has shown that there is as much iron in one Brother's Burrito as there is in a hardware store full of nails!  That's a pretty solid endorsement, from the Legion of Concerned Ironmongers.  Remember, you should be eating about an I-beam of iron a year! 9 Miles visibility under cloudy skies, breaking around 9:30.  Winds hard out of the SW and backing off as the morning unwound.  Sea surface texture broke down around 8am. and it got passingly smooth.  Air was 58.2° and the water is trying at 64.2°.  High tide is at 11:43am +3.9' and low tide is at 4:07pm +2.2'.  Nothing like the -1.6' low tide at 5:10am though!  It gave us a nice start to the morning with a 3.9' swell out of the SSW (209°).  It. was a solid 3'to 4' and fun until the tide floated it out of bounds...
