Another Foggy Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... A nother whiner being the victim...  Dude, just ride your bicycle, drink iced tea and shut up.  We're not sure, but those must be at least 3 of the 12 steps... F oggy this morning with almost a hundred yards visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was barely visible.  The air was a soggy 62.1˚ and the water was 65.5˚.  Low tide was at 8:00am +-0.0' and high tide will follow at 2:47pm +4.8'.  There's a SSW swell out of 198˚ at 3.3' and it's not quite that big (although Hermosa had some sizable walls coming through.)  We'll call it 1' to 2' and okay to fair... O ur condolences to Joe Murphy and the entire Murphy clan on the loss of Joe's dad.  We understand he'd been sick for sometime... A little squirter with Rock making the most of things... W e'll be out of town next week for a fishing/floating/skiing excursion.  Join us when we return on Tuesday the 9th!   ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it

Lost Boys & Co... K inda sums up the tabloid reality... A beautiful morning with hazy sun breaking out for a bit.  9 Miles visibility.  Winds were offshore until Danger Boy and the Professor decided to go surfing and then they went from 2.3kts out of 83˚ west to 5.5kts from 205˚ SSW with a bit of light chop to the surface.  The air temp at checkout was 63.6˚ and the water was a pleasant 65.7˚.  Low tide was at 7:11am -0.6' and high tide will follow at 1:52pm +4.7'.  We have a SSW swell out of 192˚ at 3.6' and once again it's crabbing too much to get the full effect, so we've got 1' to 2' and kinda wally.  DB & the Professor hit Ruby/Pearl for some fun little knee slappers and actually got some fun little knee slappers... E ver wonder where all the steam comes from?  Now you know...  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... W hen members of the "Bermuda Shorts Gang" have a disagreement, there's only one way to settle it... A beautiful morning, with 7 miles visibility under slightly hazy skies.  Winds were out of the SSE by 3.2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 64.3˚ and the water was a comfortable 65.8˚.  A minus low tide at 6:25am -1.1' and high tide is at 12:59pm +4.6'.  We have a SSW swell out of 206˚ at 3.0', but the turn is scrubbing a bit off of that, so we'll call it 1' to 2'.  There were some fun little biters if you had a mind to get wet... W e weren't exactly shocked by the Princess Diana headline...  Actually, we thought it had been more like years...  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Please Turn The Water Back On Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... O ne word from Tío Ted and the water stops, just like that...  Here he demonstrates how you strike fear into their greasy little hearts...  LoLa watches the brawny forearms in rapt attention... E ven though it's officially summer, it's also officially June.  In the So. Bay June trumps summer and that means overcast skies and about 7 miles visibility.  Winds were calm, but the sea surface had a slight bump going.  The air temperature was 64.4˚ and the water was 66.6˚.  Low tide was a beach combing -1.5' at 5:39am and high tide will be at 12:09pm +4.5'.  We have a weak SSW swell out of 210˚ at 1.6' and that translates into a 1' carnival of knee-slapping fun.  Tomorrow?  Probably not much change, but it's supposed to pick up later in the week... W e saw this headline and understood why newspapers are on a downhill slide...    ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... H igh above the Owens Valley in the White Mountains live the Bristlecone Pines.  They are among the oldest living things on earth.  We say "among" since they seem to keep discovering things that are as old or older.  These are in the 4500 year old range, which pretty much impresses most folks... L ight overcast this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were persistent out of the south by 1.9kts and there was a slight bump to the surface.  The air temperature was 64.6˚ and the water was 66.9˚.  High tide is at 11:21am +4.4' and low tide will be at 4:19pm +1.6'.  As the week progresses we'll be getting some minus lows in the morning, so if your favorite spot works on the lows, set your alarm for "early."  We have a WSW swell out of 250˚ at 3.3' and considering the tides, we'll call it 1' to 3' and fun, even though the intervals are a bit close.   I t is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Don Lencho

Lost Boys & Co... S o, when you paddle out with the Danger Boy, you KNOW that anything can happen.  It's Hermosa, there's a tidal push, it's 3' to 4' kinda crashy, but makeable if you step on it... Oh yeah, it's the first day of summer and the water is 68˚.  Jimmy Thomas, Milo, Rasta Pete and Kris Hall are already out.  Kinda hazy withy 15 miles visibility and the wind is still offshore by about 2.7kts and the sea surface has that little roll it's been doing for the past week.  The air is warming up and the tide is high at 8:59am +3.8' and low tide will follow at 1:45pm +1.7'.  The swell is out of 262˚ west at 3.9' and some of the outsides are maybe ear lobe high. D anger Boy and the Professor decide that the best idea would be to paddle out in the rip next to the pier.  The Professor leads the way and both get out without getting their hair wet.  They barely get to the line up and this wave goes vertical.  The Professor yells, "Dange

Lost Boys & Co... T wo Lost Boys cashed in their chips this week.  James Gandolfini and Bob Meistrell (along with Slim Whitman, but he let his membership lapse...) sailed into the mystic.  We recently caught Jimmy in "God of Carnage" and he was stellar.  But of course his role in the "Sopranos" will forever define his work.  Once we were talking to a corporate vice president and asked him who his role models were and he mentioned Tony Soprano.  We countered with the fact that Tony Soprano wasn't a real person, but James Gandolfini in his interpretation of Tony Soprano.  Honestly, the guy looked at us like we were nuts and said, "Yeah, well, I guess you won't count Bart Simpson either..."  Ahh... probably not... A nother beautiful morning here in la-la land.  Clear skies and 20 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was nice and smooth.  The air temp was 62.6˚ and the water was 66.4˚ at the buoy.  High tide was at 8:06am +3.6&#

Lost Boys & Co... T here is no question that Billy Mac would have gone for this little cover-up, except for the fact that his hair is still almost dry and that would've ruined the look...  He made it around and kept heading for the rocks...  Nice little hand thing going on as well... Y es, only a couple of days until summer officially starts!  But we had a nice clear morning with about 12 miles visibility and just a smidgen of haze.  Winds were SEbS at 2kts, but there was still a lot of residual bounce from that gale out at sea.  The air temperature was 62.8˚ and the water was 64.9˚.  High tide was at 7:06am +3.4' and it turned quick at 12:00pm +1.7'.  The buoy was reading a SSW swell out of 205˚ at 3.6' and that was about it with some bigger outsides.  You had to be patient, but you're nothin' if not patient... Lost Boys & Co... O kay, THIS is the way you go camping...  A VW Bus tent.  Of course we just used the VW and forget about the tent.  Still, a way cool idea... W ent camping this weekend at San Elijo, with the Danger Boy fam and had a great evening Sunday night with them and Andrew and Kelly Staich, who blew down from Oceanside for the get together.  Overcast in the early morning with 10 miles visibility, but that blew off pretty quickly and bright sunshine was the order of the day.  Winds were offshore by 3kts and the sea surface was a kelp aided "glassy."  The air temperature was 60.7˚ and the water was listed at 63.9˚ at the buoy, but was more like 68˚ in the surfline (almost trunkable.)  Low tide was at 10:09am +1.4' and high tide was at 5:13pm +5.0'.  We have a SSW swell out of 212˚ at 2.3' and it was 1' to 2'.  Meanwhile, out at sea, there's a major "wind event" or what used to be called a "blow."  Blasting about from aro

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have the intrepid explorer, none other than Danger Boy™.  His legacy looms large over the Owens Valley and encompasses just about everything his shadow covered in this photo.  Without the aid of a map he lead us to this remote spot where we found these petroglyphs representing the feet of water nymphs.  They no longer give out maps to these locations because certain nefarious types have been chipping or sawing them off the rock face and selling them to likewise unscrupulous collectors.  Case in point:  the left side of this glyph has been hacked off.  It, more than likely, contained the best example of this section of rock art.  We found numerous areas where folks had ravaged this ancient site.  Just makes you shake your head... O vercast this morning, so you can tell it's June and 7 miles visibility so you can see where you are.  Winds were 4kts out of the south and there was a light brush on the water at checkout.  63.1˚ air temp. and the ocean is 63.7˚ at the buoy and around 68˚ at the Hermosa Pier.  We're not sure about the 68, but it was nice...  Low tide is at 7:08am +0.2' and high tide will follow at 2:07pm +3.8'.  The buoy shows a WSW swell out of 255˚ at 3.3

Lost Boys & Co... S o, in the distance we could see this perfectly green mountain in the midst of all this brown sagebrush.  But it wasn't green like you'd expect something covered in vegetation to be.  It looked like a giant chunk of patinaed copper.  And that's exactly what it was, a mountain of copper ore!  We investigated and actually found among the copper, pieces of ore that were on their way to becoming turquoise.  Of course they just need a few more thousand years.  In the foreground of the photo of LoLa with her chunk of the pile you can see a small nugget of turquoise waiting to be snatched up...
