Thurgistical Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Two Lost Boys cashed in their chips this week.  James Gandolfini and Bob Meistrell (along with Slim Whitman, but he let his membership lapse...) sailed into the mystic.  We recently caught Jimmy in "God of Carnage" and he was stellar.  But of course his role in the "Sopranos" will forever define his work.  Once we were talking to a corporate vice president and asked him who his role models were and he mentioned Tony Soprano.  We countered with the fact that Tony Soprano wasn't a real person, but James Gandolfini in his interpretation of Tony Soprano.  Honestly, the guy looked at us like we were nuts and said, "Yeah, well, I guess you won't count Bart Simpson either..."  Ahh... probably not...

Another beautiful morning here in la-la land.  Clear skies and 20 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was nice and smooth.  The air temp was 62.6˚ and the water was 66.4˚ at the buoy.  High tide was at 8:06am +3.6' and low tide will follow at 12:54pm +1.7'.  We have a SSW swell out of 203˚ at 3.9' and it's crackin' at 3' to 5' on the outside.  Hermosa was especially fun in the early am and Capt. Donnie is telling us that the winds are continuing on the outer waters, so we could be in for a couple more days of this swell...  Sounds good to us...

Bob Meistrell, shown here covered in several grand worth of bugs, made it possible for us to go surfing in February and not turn that marvelous shade of purple-rosé.  Before his "Body Glove" wetsuits became popular legions of frozen surfers yearned for "summer on the inside."  Not that they took hold overnight, we remember the "big" guys making fun of us for sporting those lousy beaver tailed jackets.  But when they did catch on, it was magic.  When we find out when the paddle-out will be, we'll let you know...

Overheard at Brother's this morning:  "It was like being stabbed with a rusty plastic fork!"

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."
