Two Times 13 Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I n case you heard the rumors that Hermosa Beach was closed, we have photographic evidence that it is now open (#1).  Of course because they're having this big ass volleyball tournament there's no place to park, but that's not something you can't work around... H azy sun this morning with 15 miles visibility.  Winds were light onshore and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 68.5 and the water is 66.4, warming throughout the day.  High tide was at 6:01am +3.0' and low tide follows at 10:35am +2.2'.  There's a SSW swell out of 195º at 3.6' and the surf was 3' with a nasty shorebreak that ended in sand busting endings to your ride.  Bacallao and the Professor got some short but intense rides... S pasilac is a water feature in central Croatia.  They need lifeguards (#2), because people dive into the beautiful water there, at the base of the waterfalls (#3) and discover that the water is about 50º.  The lifeguards don't

Lost Boys & Co... W hat do we have here (#1)?  It's the Professor's new ride, kinda...  He took the ape-hangers off and added enough electricity to dim the lights in Carson every time he hits the throttle.  Tarzan did the modifications with a bit of help from LUNA Cycle and Strand Electric Bikes.  In fact Tarzan is now quite the expert on electric bikes.  If you have any questions about turning your ride into a pedal-assist or a Vincent Black Bamboo Lightning like the Professor, see him... A beautiful morning this, with 15 miles visibility and light winds out of the SW.  The sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was a warm 66.3 and the water is 68.5.  8:46am is low tide at +1.6' and high tide will be at 3:55pm +4.5'.  We have an rather oblique SSW swell out of 193º at 2.3' and it was 1' to 2' and great shape if you could manage the ankle-snappers... E verywhere you go in Croatia they have some connection to the shooting location of "Game of

A MoMo 4 Year Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... #1   Our own MoMo sneaking across the inside at Malibu.  July 21, was her 4th anniversary of surfing every day!  What a fabulous accomplishment!  To top it off she got to the semi's at the Malibu contest this weekend.  Maybe tomorrow we'll talk about Christian tying for first and then having to take second because the waves stopped cold in the finals and ruined his wave count... I t actually tried to rain this morning!  The nerve!  Only a few sprinkles and overcast skies with 7 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the west by 2.9kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 63.5 and the water is 67.3.  If you hadn't noticed we're having a cool summer this year, if July is any indication.  Low tide was at 7:20am +0.8' and high tide was at 2:22pm +4.1.  We have a SSW swell out of 205º at 2.6' and that's about what it looked like, although the shape was good and if you had the right board, possibly fun... I n Dalmatia we spl

Lost Boys & Co... W e got this from Julia Rieger regarding the standing wave in Munich! Good morning!! That´s awesome and it´s is seriously so much fun - not the ocean but still a wave :-) So it's definitely best in the spring and summer when the water is higher from the melting snow in the mountains PLUS you don´t freeze your ass off. Congratulations!!! (re: Suzanne and Joey getting hitched) When does she get married and where. I am sure you will be on the road again pretty soon! Our next travel plans go to Portugal, Lombok and West Australia. Julia Sounds like a lot of fun and some great travel plans! D own at the ocean front in Zadar is the famous "Sea Organ." (#1)  There are pipes placed in the sea wall that make these harmonic tones.  When the surf comes up it can be pretty much a cacophony, but most of the time there are these soothing notes that make a calming background to your walk on the seawall... W ould you believe that it was gray AGAI

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have LoLa (#1) and a local resting in the shade near the docks of this small marina in Opatija.  With all those islands along the Croatian coast small harbors and moorings are almost everywhere you go.  Some have only a handful of boats and others are full scale affairs... W hat is July not understanding about fog?  Like there's not supposed to be any, that's what.  But it was overcast and 5 miles visibility and to top it off the winds were onshore.  The air temp was 64.9 and the water is 68.7.  Low tide was early at 5:20am -0.5' and high tide follows at 11:51am +4.0'.  There's a SSW swell out of 198º at 3.3' and it was good if you caught it early at 1' to 3', but started coming apart with the tide... I f there's one thing you have to see when you go to Croatia, that would be the Plitvice Lakes National Park (#'s 2 - 4).  We have no idea why they call it Plitvice "Lakes," since the real attraction are thes

Lost Boys & Co... (#1) Demonstrates the grayness of the morning (5 miles visibility).  Winds were soft offshore by 6kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a predictable 65.5 and the water is 67.6.  High tide was at 11:18am +4.0' and low tide will be not that low at 3:57pm +2.3'.  We have a SSW swell out of 209º at 3.9' and it was just about that with 3' to 4' waves getting mushed out by the high tide... R ovinj in the Istrian countryside is a delightful town with a fabulous harbor (#2).  You can see the weather vane on the church for miles out to sea.  It's a statue of St. Euphemia and when it faces out to sea the locals are happy because that means that the winds are warm and light.  But when she faces the north the locals hunker down because that signals that the "Bora" winds will blow.  The Boras come down and are cold and fierce.  On the island of Pag, there's a story about a Bora that blew so hard it blew fish out of the water..

Lost Boys & Co... H ere (#1) we have the Professor, with the watchful eye of Josep Broz over his shoulder, ready to start a meeting of the senior men's socialist cell in Valenje.  This meeting hall was in the castle that overlooks Valenje and was there centuries before socialism and will no doubt be there when the feudal system returns...  Just a matter of time... G hastly crumb foggies this morning, with 3 blocks visibility.  Should clear up by noon.  Winds were light out of the west by 3.0kts and the sea surface was smooth enough.  The air temperature was 64.4 and the water is 66.7 at the buoy.  High tide was at 10:44am +3.9' and low tide will count down at 3:21pm +2.3'.  We have a 3.9' SSW swell out of 193º and it was 3' to 4' on the rising tide... O ut in the countryside of Galiciji, LoLa and Tomasz's (#2) oldest son get cuddly with his new litter of pups.  He raises them and over time has done a pretty good business selling them.  He and his brother

Robe-O-Call Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Y es, today was Robe-O-Call Monday and Bacalao (Versace) and the Professor (Fox Sports) (#1) were in step with their robes veritably flowing in the light southeast breeze.  Actually, they weren't veritably flowing, they were actually flowing.  They were quick to discover that if you wear a robe, people notice!  AND they get out of your way...  Important notes here, pay attention.  Next Robe-Call will be announced...  Stay tuned...  Smoking jackets are allowed... O vercast with a bit of fog this morning as visibility was down to 2 miles.  SE wind at 2.5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 64.5 and the water is 67.1, but reading 71 in Hermosa.   High tide is at 10:08am +3.9' and low tide will be at 2:43pm +2.3'.  There's a SSW swell out of 200º at 3.3' and it was a high tide floating 2' to 3'... O ur own Julia Rieger, on the standing wave in Munich (#2).  We understand it's not as easy as it looks, but it does

Lost Boys & Co... H azy sun this morning (#1) with barely 3 miles visibility.  Winds were persistent out of the SW by 5kts and there a slight bump.  The air temp was 66.3 and the water is 67.5.  High tide was at 7:40am +3.6' and low tide follows at 12:30pm +1.9'.  The 46221 Buoy tells us that we have a SSW swell out of 206º which exhibiting some signs of swinging more to the west.  It's 3.3' and the surf is a high-tide-backed-up 2' to 3' with some fun ones... O ur own LoLa (#2) in her role as "Scout", as she makes her way up to the summit at Kammnik, Slovenia, before the weather closed in.  We had just reached the warming hut when marbles the size of hail starting pelting us...  Hot chocolate and barley soup revived the group...  (We're tired of hail being compared to other things, so we're comparing other things to hail.) O utside of Kranjska Gora, the Slovenian Alpine Jumping Team has their training jumps.  You have 5 runs (#3) to work up

Lost Boys & Co... "I will love you until the dragons roar" is basically what the people in Ljubljanska like to say about the sculptures that grace one of their bridges.   A city that has three rivers running through it, water seems to be everywhere... Overcast this morning with almost 5 miles visibility.  Calm winds and smooth sea surface.  Surf is 2' and supposed to get a tad bigger as the swell swings to a more western direction... Here we have a clip out of our re-make of the Sound of Music, featuring Luke Delameter as a nazi youth who fleas to Slovenia to open a beer garden.  In the process he meets up with a young Josep Broz Tito and they invent Yugoslavia.  A slapstick view of history, parental caution is advised for alcohol, nudity and accordion music... The legendary Lake Bled, with Luke, Brian & Cathy.  We made the crossing by hiring this strapping young man to row us across on this flat bottomed piece of floating furniture.  He was an electrical engineer

Lost Boys & Co... A h, the campanile and the Doge's palace off the square in Venice (#1)  This time we noticed that there was a drop in the number of pigeons that make the square their home.  A bit of inquiry led us to find that there has been a concerted effort to reduce the number of pigeons that overrun the area.  Early in the morning there is a crew that makes it's way through the plaza and they trap hundreds of the birds.  Maybe you've noticed the abundance of squab on the Venetian menus...  Not surprising... T he sun is taking his sweet time coming out and it's overcast for the checkout with 7 miles visibility.  The air temperature is 65.5 and the water is slow to warm at 66.7.  Low tide was at 9:41am +0.7' and high tide will be at 4:39pm +5.2'.  We have a SW swell out of 217º at 3.6', but once again it's a little to angled to hit us with enough power.  It's 2' and poor to fair... M ost summer evenings you'll find the various orches
