A MoMo 4 Year Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

#1  Our own MoMo sneaking across the inside at Malibu.  July 21, was her 4th anniversary of surfing every day!  What a fabulous accomplishment!  To top it off she got to the semi's at the Malibu contest this weekend.  Maybe tomorrow we'll talk about Christian tying for first and then having to take second because the waves stopped cold in the finals and ruined his wave count...

It actually tried to rain this morning!  The nerve!  Only a few sprinkles and overcast skies with 7 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the west by 2.9kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 63.5 and the water is 67.3.  If you hadn't noticed we're having a cool summer this year, if July is any indication.  Low tide was at 7:20am +0.8' and high tide was at 2:22pm +4.1.  We have a SSW swell out of 205º at 2.6' and that's about what it looked like, although the shape was good and if you had the right board, possibly fun...

In Dalmatia we split for Split, so to speak.  We heard there was a sand beach there and it was close to our apartment.  Well, it turns out everyone in Split knows there's only one sandy beach and they ALL go there (#2).  It's also the shallowest beach in all Croatia, so you could wade out for a couple of hundred yards and not get your hair wet!

#3 Is where they kept the dragons in game of thrones.  It was actually the keep of Diocletian's palace in Split.  The more we learned about Diocletian the more we wanted to know!  Pretty amazing dude!

In Omis (pronounced O-mish) the mountains careen almost straight down to the sea (#4).  And make sure you refer to it as a sea.  The locals take umbrage if you call it the "ocean."  Of all the little bergs we visited on this trip, Omis was one of the most picturesque.  There's a river that run right into the sea and then there are those mountains that drop precipitously into the water.  It happens that Michael Leko spent some time there as a young man and we all could see why he thought it was so special.

Since there are numerous islands and fewer bridges, one of the best ways to get around is by ferry(#5).  They are for the most part pretty nice and bordering on luxurious in some cases.  Buck's girlfriend wondered where they made such great boats.  The Professor suggested, like everything else, that they were made in China.  It took them half the ride, but they finally discovered that they were made right there in Croatia, by one of the outstanding ferry builders on the planet...

For your happy hour pleasure it'll be Laurel Tavern at 5:30pm on Friday...  See you then if not before...
