In The Throes Of Another Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Here we have LoLa (#1) and a local resting in the shade near the docks of this small marina in Opatija.  With all those islands along the Croatian coast small harbors and moorings are almost everywhere you go.  Some have only a handful of boats and others are full scale affairs...

What is July not understanding about fog?  Like there's not supposed to be any, that's what.  But it was overcast and 5 miles visibility and to top it off the winds were onshore.  The air temp was 64.9 and the water is 68.7.  Low tide was early at 5:20am -0.5' and high tide follows at 11:51am +4.0'.  There's a SSW swell out of 198º at 3.3' and it was good if you caught it early at 1' to 3', but started coming apart with the tide...

If there's one thing you have to see when you go to Croatia, that would be the Plitvice Lakes National Park (#'s 2 - 4).  We have no idea why they call it Plitvice "Lakes," since the real attraction are these fabulous waterfalls.  There's no big river that feeds these waterfalls, but underground artesian springs that bubble up all over this area.  There must be hundreds of them and some are spectacular for the clarity of the water and their height (like #4 that's 300 feet tall.)  They are filled with the biggest trout you've ever seen, but leave your gear at home since there's no fishing...  Oh yeah, and no swimming either...

(Read this in Boris Badenov accent.) Is beautiful Latvian girls getting ready for national Latvian folk dance (#5).  We spent a couple of days in Zadar and just happened to be there for a recital of Balkan folk dancers.  Great entertainment, this troupe was especially talented...
