Lost Boys & Co... F rom the archives, we have this photo of the now famous 5 hour lunch in Guatemala.  This is the chicken entrĂ©e about course number three which followed the soup course and  the hors d'oeuvres.  Between courses we compared firearms.  Our host Nathan and his crew all carried Glocks.  38's and 45's were the preferred armaments of the guests.  Of course everyone had machetes...  The machetes came in handy for the shrimp, pork and beef courses... C loudy with 7 miles visibility this morning.  Winds were on from the start at about 3.5kts and the sea surface was lightly chopped.  The air temp was 59.5˚ and the water was 64.2˚, as things try to warm up for the long weekend.  High tide was 5:58am +3.9' and low tide will follow at 11:58am +0.6'.  We have a weak SSW swell out of 198˚ at 2.6' and it's 1' on the shore.   R eminiscent of the blade TJ used for years, the Professor picked this one up to do some restoring.  It's not a machet

Lost Boys & Co... S omeone sent us a collection of photos from C.J. Kale.  Although he does some interesting local scenic work (photo #2,) he has gained some considerable notoriety for taking photos of the lava flowing into the sea on the Big Island.  This is a little dicier than you might think, since the water temp can get up to the boiling and beyond range.  One mistake and you become "Photographer Thermidor."   Q uite a bit cooler in the water here in the So. Bay.  We have cloudy skies and 6 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore at 2.5kts and the sea surface was smooth with a bit of short-period swell roll.  The air temp was 58.5˚ and the water is 63.1˚.  Low tide is at 11:04am +0.4' and high tide will follow at 5:52pm +5.0'.  We have a SSW swell out of 202˚ at 3.9' and it's 3' to 4' and needs either more or less tide...  You decide... Lost Boys & Co... B ad lighting, odd perspectives and hazy photos of the Professor's new stick.  7'10", thick and a quad set-up.  Which way is up?  (We know the fins go on the bottom.) S tarted out cloudy with about 10 miles visibility.  Winds were off by 4.7kts and the sea surface was smooth until the wind turned.  The air temperature was 57.8˚ and the water is a rather "springish" 63.1˚.  Low tide was at 10:05am +0.1' and high tide will be at dinnertime, 5:01pm +4.6'.  We have a wind swell out of the west 250˚ at 4.3' and it was 3' to 4' with some bigger outsides. I f you're looking for some excitement tonight, head down to the Redondo High Gym, where the Seahawks will be meeting Huntington High for the Southern Section CIF Men's Volleyball finals.  Under the helm of Duncan Avery, Redondo has the best chance ever!  Try not to miss it!  7pm...   C hĂ© used his considerable talents to shape it, channels and all and the Professor

Lost Boys & Co... W e were somewhat taken aback when we ran into Batman and Catwoman right there on the street at the beginning of the race.  Note to Criminals:  Who was watching Gotham City?  Should you ever feel the spirit move you to run in this race and wear a costume, we suggest wearing something in which you can run.  These orchids ( Orchidaceae ), were noticeably wilted by mile three and ready for re-potting by the end of the race... S pring is the season when the winds are most capricious.  They started things out onshore and only got stronger during the day, leading to white capped seas and choppy conditions.  Clear skies and 15 miles visibility.  The air temperature was 57.5˚ and the water was 64.2˚ (until that wind does it's job on the upwelling.)  Low tide was at 9:01am -0.2' and high tide will be at 4:02pm +4.2'.  We have a SSW swell out of 206˚ at 4.9' and it's a mixed-up 3' to 5'.  Maybe mañana.  The winds are supposed to turn around...

Lost Boys & Co... W hen you roll with ChĂ© and LoLa you have to dress the part.  This was the 103rd running of the fabled race and our crew was a variety of super heroes, some not-so-well-known.  Photo #1 features LoLa, Suzanne. ChĂ©, Letitia, Randy, Jessie and Darwin. I nteresting side-shore wind out of the SSE at 5.3kts brushing back the peaks and smoothing out the surface.  Partly cloudy skies and 10 miles visibility, even through the winds.  The air temperature is 60.5˚ and the water is 64.6˚ at the buoy and about the same on the beach.  Low tide was at 7:59am -0.5' and high tide was this afternoon at 2:54pm +3.5'.  We have a SSW swell out of 205˚ at 3.9'.  The surf was 3' to 4' and some very nice waves... P hoto #2 shows how crowded it was, unless of course you were standing next to this gent who was contemplating whether or not to put on his togs or race al fresco.  We only saw 15 or so folks running in the buff, but it always seems that you're tryi

L eave it to LoLa to find a fried treat at the soccer match.  The specialty here were those fried dough things that are related to churros, but are in the shapes of stars and butterflies and whatever.  They cover them in powdered sugar and you have your basic fatty, sweet treat!  Delicious! A nother hot one!  Cloudless skies and 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were off by 4.3kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air was already 77.7˚ at 6:30am and the water temp was 60.4˚ at the buoy.  High tide will be at 10:58am +4.0' and low tide will follow at 3:55pm +1.6'.  We have a SSW swell out of 198˚ at 2.3'.  It's 1' and poor, but Jimmy Thomas went out because it was so damned hot!   C aptain Donnie went for a swim yesterday as his thermostat maxed out and when he surfaced you could cut glass with his nipples!  Just a tad chilly out there for swimming... Lost Boys & Co... I t gets hot and dusty during the Semana Santa procession and no one knows that better than Don Lando and his beautiful family.  No, they're not triplets, but there are a set of twins in the mix! A s far as we know the full-moon has nothing to do with the hot weather, but it is nice to sit out and not have it too cool to chase you into the house as the moon rises.  Clear skies and 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were off at 5.4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a warm 68.6˚ and the water was 60.4˚.  High tide is at 10:11am +4.0' and low tide will be at 3:17pm +1.4'.  We have a south swell out of 188˚ at 2.0'.  If it weren't weak enough, that angle takes it over the edge.  We'll call it flat for all intents and purposes...  Go paddle... A fter the   procession we were invited into the house, which is built in the old Spanish style of the interior patio.  While we were eating the Lando's pet peacocks gave us quite a show...  W

Lost Boys & Co... I n El Salvador during Holy Week ( "Semana Santa" ) they do the Stations of the Cross through the streets of MetĂ¡pan.  At each of the Stations they pause and say prayers that describe the trek of Christ to Calvary.  As they carry the palanquin which features Christ with a cross, they stop on these murals done with flower petals, leaves and other organic materials.  It takes them a few hours to execute these works of art and then the procession grinds them to their component parts...  Like "Remember man that thou art dust and unto dust thou shall return..." H ot tamales this morning, with clear skies and 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were off with a vengeance at 10kts and the sea surface had a definite ripple going out.  The air was a warm 72.5˚ and the water was 60.6˚, with some spikes into the mid-sixties  all day long.  High tide was at 9:28am +4.1' and low tide was at 2:42pm +1.3'.  We have a SSW swell out of 207˚ at 2.3' and it

Lost Boys & Co... Y es, El Salvador!  Land of the eternal rights... But no, there are a few lefts if you know where to look.  In this case it was right in front of "Roca Sunzal" at Playa El Tunco.  You could sit there sippin' your "Pilzener" and watch the little guys bounce off the lips and do their aerial acrobatics.  On this particular day it was glassy all day long.  Que regalo!  H ere in Southern California we're gearing up for a week of warm and the waves are responding by gettin' mo' smaller.  Winds are off by 10.2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  20 miles visibility under cloudless skies.  The air temp was already 67.3˚ at 6am and the water temperature was 60.6˚.  High tide was at 8:45am +4.0' and low tide will be at 2:09pm +1.2'.  We have a diminishing 3.0' swell out of the SSW 195˚.  It's 1' to 2' and the kids here were just like the ones in El Salvador, rippin' despite the less than stellar conditions..

Lost Boys & Co... L oLa and JosĂ© got into the carnival atmosphere with these street performers.  They were amazingly agile on those stilts.  At least we think they were stilts... T hings have straightened out a bit this morning with partly cloudy skies and 15 miles visibility.  Winds were variable out of the SE from 3 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 55.5˚ and the water was 57.0˚.  High tide was at 5:20am +3.6' and low tide will follow at 11:52am +0.9'.  We have that peaky west wind swell out of 261˚ at 3.6'.  We're going to call it 4' and fun to funner... W hen it's time to leave Cuba you have to do it in style.  We chose this sexy yellow number outside the "Floridita."  You put surfboards in the back of one of these babies and crank up the Beach Boys and it's like a choir of angels rolling down the Calle de Infanta... Lost Boys & Co... W e mentioned the brewery yesterday, so we thought we'd show their wares.  If you notice the table in the background, they have their own private keg/decanter.  It sits proudly on your tabletop begging to be emptied.  There's a combo playing smooth salsa at the end of the hall, the beer is cold and there's all the cacahuates (Spanish peanuts), you can eat.  Pretty sweet way to burn off a hot afternoon... P artly cloudy skies this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were strong offshore by 6.8kts and the sea surface had a definite roll.  The air temperature was 56.5˚  and at the buoy we read a 56.3˚ (63˚ posted at the Hermosa Pier.)  Low tide at 11:04am +0.9' and high tide will follow late at 6:12pm +4.0'.  We have a strong west wind swell out of 268˚ at 6.2' and it's 4' to 7' at most spots.  We saw a couple of 10' faces this morning at Hermosa, so if you think you might want a good push, head down! Lost Boys & Co... S ome edificios in today's report!  Number one is the "Hotel Nacional," which also hosts the premier "Bay of Pigs" exhibit.  Today the bay is known as Playa Giron (which it's probably always been called, but Bay of Pigs spins better in the US.)  The hotel is a four star affair and overlooks the bay and the Malecon .  A bit spendy, but it would be nice for a special occasion.  The Parisian Review is in the nightclub out front... Y ou could tell it was going to blow from the get-go.  4kts from the west at checkout and it's been gusting up to 21kts most of the day.  20+ miles visibility and some clouds flitting by at a rapid rate.  The air temperature is 55.1˚ and the water was 62.4˚ and has been falling all day long with the windblown upwelling (3pm 59.5˚.)  Low tide is at 10:06am +0.8' and high tide is at 5:35pm +3.7'.  There's a west swell out of 275˚ at 3.9', rising throughout the day (3pm 7.9').  Waves have

Lost Boys & Co... S o, one evening we wandered over to the "Floridita Club," famous haunt of Hemingway and his crew.  It was here that (as the story goes) Hemingway assisted in the construction, development and testing of the first daiquiris.  To honor those who had gone before us we tasted the "original" and several mutations.  The verdict:  Not in the top five of our list.  We'll just say that #1 is Jim Campbell's famous daiquiri made in an industrial model "Slurpee®" maker...  Ask Mark Mitchler...
