With Rose Colored Glasses All The Red Flags Just Look Like Flags Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... #1)  F ar right we have A-Aron telling the crew that it's dangerous out there, well YEAH!  It took 5 stitches (#2) to close the gap in his eyebrow after a collision with the rail of his board.  AND you should see the board!  He'll heal, but the board is going to need significant repair...  We're thinking a butterfly bandage would have left a more pleasing scar... G ray and cloudy this morning with seven and three quarters of a mile visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 56.0º and the water is trying at 59.2º.  What's a .8 to anyone anyway?  High tide will be at 9:30am +5.3' and low tide follows at 3:43pm -0.3'.  There was a 3.6' swell out of west 265º with a full tide rolling 4' to 5' with some fat outsides.  Looked like fun until A-Aron almost lost an eye... Lost Boys & Co... S omehow photo #1 reminded us of old Hermosa.  Long sloping lines and ample room for a nose ride if you decided not to stand tall and do nothing at all... B eautiful day with 20+ miles visibility and winds out of the ESE by 3 to 4kts.  The sea surface has a bit of a roll.  The air temperature was 55.0º and the water is trying to recover from the windy conditions at 57.7º.  High tide is at 8:48am +5.6' and low tide will be at 3:16pm -0.6'.  We have a WSW swell out of 240º at 4.3' and it looks bigger than that at 4' to 6' and some fun peaks. #2) Features Asher Vollom on this sweet little left into the pier.  We snapped this shot and he immediately went to the nose and hung 5 all the way to the pier! #3)   Breaking through the office a bit of a wide-stanced approach to this nice peak.  Could have been a little more casual, which is easy to say while watching from the pier. " O UTSIDE" and up!  As these two V-22 Ospreys (#4) flew over th

Lost Boys & Co... W riting this on Sunday because Monday morning we'll be in the O.R. at Kaiser getting our cataract clouded lens swapped out for a new plastic model.  So if the report is a bit late or doesn't show, it could be that we couldn't find the keyboard with our unpatched eye...  Also all the weather reports are calling for rain, like a 100%.  We take this news with our usual amount of Southern California skepticism, but you might want to bring the firewood in and get ready to snuggle up with the sweety of your choice... M onday:  Rain started around 7:30 and as you can see has been spitting, but not "raining."  2 miles visibility under cloudy threatening skies and the wind is blowing enthusiastically out of the SE by 12 to 15kts.  The air temperature is 56.4º and the water has dipped again to 57.7º.  High tide was at 7:12am +5.5' and low tide will be at 2:08pm -0.9'.  So the Santa Monica Bay Buoy is showing a SE swell out of 146º, which sugge

Lost Boys & Co... T he Redondo Seahawk Surf team showed up bright and early (#1) for their annual contest/grudge-match against arch rival Mira Costa.  It started out not-so-hot and got worse from there.  Giving the devil their due, Costa has a great team, but Redondo isn't exactly an easy pass.  So, it's time for a little soul searching and maybe recommitting ourselves to the task.  Costa can be beat and Redondo's the one to do it! A foggy hazy morning with visibility less than a half a mile.  Winds were moderate to light onshore and the sea surface was lightly textured.  The air temp was 54.3º and the water is 58.3º.  A one-tide wonder today with a low at 11:32am -0.2'.  Even with such a low there were still some decent corners and it could be fun tomorrow morning as well... L ights, camera, action!  Jah and Burnsy (#2) are shooting a short film on the morning ritual.  We won't say too much about it, but we'll let you know when it's a wrap.  Wait, mayb

Lost Boys & Co... A year ago today we were grabbing some high tide windswell bumping through the office (#'s 1 & 2). Hard to catch, but great for longboarders! B ut today we've got hazy sun warming from 55º to 79º and soft offshore winds 2 to 3kts.  The sea surface was smooth.  Water is still coming up from the wind assisted low and was 57.6º, although the surface temperature felt closer to 60.  Low tide was at 8:25am +0.2' and high tide fills in at 3:05pm +2.7'.  We have a playful SSW swell out of 203º at 2.0' and it was 2' to 3' and some fine longboard sliding! S herman, the Wayback®!  How about 1972 (#3) and the crew was posting up at the Topaz house for dinner after an afternoon surf.  Clockwise from back left:  Boomfwappa, the Professor, LoLa and Julia.  Looking like refugees from a Grateful Dead concert, Boomfwappa was riding a Rick, Barry Kaniapuni 3 stringer cut down to a rocket and the Professor had shaped a 5'11" lime green squash

Lost Boys & Co... W e've been searching for a caption for this photo (#1) but nothing appropriate comes bubbling to the surface.  Given everything to work with (Jah, tequila, freezer, bouquet) it shouldn't be that hard... 10 miles visibility and cloudless skies.  Not much wind and calm sea surface.  Air temperature was 52.3º and the water was a wind driven 56.8º despite the sunny weather.  Low tide at 7:08am +0.1' and high tide at 1:18pm +3.2'.  It's a WSW swell out of 250º at 3.6' and it was 3' to 4'+ and not easy to get out in the middle, but a freight train next to the pier... W e just saw Jay Rae the other day and she's pregnant!  Congrats to her and Flinch and whatever little mermaid they have.  Stocking up at Mickey's (#2)... All Things Being Equinox Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W ell, it's not exactly the equinox, that was yesterday, but it feels like the equinox.  Besides all of that, it blew like crazy yesterday and the wind swell this morning is pumping.  Here (#1) we have Perk, pulling into what he makes look like a perfectly good barrel, instead of an impersonation of Puerto Escondido.  Winds were out of the east at 3 to 5kts and the sea surface was a bit uneven.  The air temperature was 51.5º and the water dropped a couple to 57.6º.  Low tide was at 6:08am +0.0' and high tide was at 12:13pm +3.9'.  It's a west swell out of 269º at 5.2' and it was a dredging, hollow 5' to 7' and great for our shortboarders, but not longboard friendly...  Meanwhile, Christian on a mid-length (#2), was out there for a couple of sessions making it look easy.  Like he does... Y es, they finally stopped kissing (#3) and they started cooking.  Paella to be exact and it was delicious! S o they have "shaved" Brussels S

Lost Boys & Co... A particularly brilliant setting moon this morning (#1) trying to avoid getting stuck on the pier... U nder cloudless skies we had 10 miles visibility and light offshore winds.  The sea surface was slightly bumped.  The air temp was 51.0º and the water is 58.3º.  High tide was at 9:58am +5.4' and low tide follows at 4:18pm -0.2'.  We have a west swell out of 264º at 3.9' and it was a fun 3' to 5' with the shorebreak keeping everyone honest...  Photo #2 features alumnus Kade Kaufmann showing the current crop of Seahawks how to successfully manage the slow rollers.  Amazing how much the seniors progress in size, maturity and ability after they graduate... Happy St. Patrick's Thursday Surf & Culture report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... A nd a Happy St. Patrick's Day to all of you!  Members of the McNulty School of Irish Dance (#1) were present to welcome the morning in the best Irish fashion!  Mind the hoppy-two's... I t was pea-soup fog in Redondo (#2) this morning as we checked out an impenetrable Sapphire (if you look closely you can see the fog bank beyond the harbor).  Hermosa had fine visibility and 2 to 3kt on shore winds bumping things up a bit.  The air temp was 51.5º and the water is 58.6º.  9:22am for the high tide +5.5' and low tide follows at 3:53pm -0.5'.  We have a bouncing west swell out of 262º at 4.3' and it was 4' to 6' and it had size and power despite the rising tide... Y ou might imagine Kevin Sousa (#3) was saying, "Didn't we just do this in Mexico?"  Well, yes we did, but it seems there's a legal catch in having a ceremony done out of the country for American citizens.  So they did it AGAIN!  The best part was that there were

Lost Boys & Co... S o often paddle-outs are associated with our departed colleagues, but this one (#1) was to celebrate the union of Christian and Morgan.  Now there would have been more surfers, except this was the third session for most of the crew and these were the ones who still had a bit of arm strength or could suffer more... F oggy this morning with visibility varying from moment to moment.  Winds were offshore 2 to 3kts and the sea surface had a pronounced roll to it.  The air temperature was 54.5º and the water is 59.9º.  High tide was at 8:46am +5.5' and low tide will be at 3:30pm -0.6'.  We have a west swell out of 262º at 5.2' and it was 4' to 6' and rolling and a bit wonky... W hen we first headed down to Zihuat/Saladitas in the late 90's this (#2) was a common sight.  In fact some may recall that TJ managed to get our ride dinged by a pissed-off bull who he was trying to nudge off the road.  Christian was a bit more cautious...  No dings... O ur condolences to Brendan Simmons and his family on the loss of his father.  We were shocked and saddened to hear that he had passed away after having surgery, that we had imagined would get him back in action.  Hug your loved ones people! H azy sun this morning with 15 miles visibility.  Winds were light offshore at 2 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a bracing 48.8º and the water is trying at 59.2º.  High tide was at 8:11am +5.4' and plunges to a -0.6' at 3:05pm for you clam digging pleasure.  We are enjoying a WSW swell out of 240º at 3.9' and it was 3' to 5' and continues to be some of the best surf we've had in a while! S unny and bright today in Hermosa with light offshore winds and smooth seas.  The air temp was 48.0º and the water is cool at 58.5º.  Low tide bottomed out at 12:00pm +0.4' for the only tide of the day.  We have a 2.0' WSW swell out of 210º and it was a sketchy 2' with a few corners. J etski and the Princess Bride Jah Morgan (#2).  To say the bride was stunning would be a gross understatement.  Also she and her intended were the perfect host and hostess, taking care of the most minute details all along the way... Best Day Ever Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... B uck Delameter said it best and said it every morning of our surfari to Saladitas, "Best Day Ever!"  Just when you thought Monday was best along came Tuesday and so on...  The wedding was fabulous and there are too many photos of which we'll share only a few and the surf was fun and there are hardly any water photos because everyone was surfing.  If any of those surface we'll share them too!  Let's start out with a view from the "Delameter Balcony", BKD presiding (#1) I f that wasn't enough we came home to absolutely great surf in Hermosa!  It was 25º colder, but great shape and long rides!  Skies were clear and 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were 2 to 4kts offshore and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was 54.5º and the water is 58.3º and actually felt good on the bug bites.  Only one tide at 11am, low +0.8' and it helped the west swell out of 274º running at 3.3'.  It was a good 3' to 4' and some of the best
