Another Memorial Day Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... #1.)  H ere we have a little right caroming of the jetty just to the west of South Beach and to the south of Crescent City Harbor.  If it had been another foot bigger this might have been the spot.  Speaking of Crescent City Harbor, you might recall that they really received the brunt of the tsunami on the west coast, from the Fukushima earthquake in Japan.  Things got washed up beyond the highway (Highway 1) and people didn't cart them all away.  They just painted some of them and used them for signs... O vercast and not warm today.  Winds were fluky and the sea surface was textured and gray.  The air temperature was 60.0º and the water is 62.6º.Low tide was at 8:44am -0.5' and high tide will be at 4:01pm +3.9'.  A little tide would've helped this morning for sure with a SSW swell out of 198º at 3.0'.  A bit crashy, but there were a couple if you could grab them early... A h, here (#2) we have the Professor showing off one of Greg Noll's h

Lost Boys & Co... W hy Crescent City?  Good question Paver.  Crescent City because Morgan and Christian have a cool pad up there that they rent out as a vacation rental.  We snagged it on a week that they had no guests to do a surf trip, build some furniture and recon the area for future trips.  They certainly do have good surf, but the cold is a real issue.  Definitely for me a summer destination... 10 miles visibility under partly cloudy skies.  Winds were side to offshore by 3 to 5kts.  The sea surface was textured.  The air temperature was 58.8 and the water is trying at 61.9.  High tide was at 10:28am +4.1' and low tide will be at 3:21pm +1.5'.  We have a SSW swell out of 196 at 4.6' and it was all that and a bit more on the outsides!  Fun day in the South Bay! G etting ready to hit the surf (#1) it's Jah, Mr. Christian and the Professor (Looking like 10lbs of Linguiça in a 5lb bag).  We surfed this day at South Beach which featured long rolling waves that pre

Shasta (#1) as you descend into Oregon.  The fact that it is snow covered should immediately tell you something about the theme in this week's S&CR. P artly cloudy this morning and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were light onshore at 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 58.3º and the water is 60.8º.  High tide was at 9:33am +4.2' and low tide will be at 2:41pm +1.2'.  We have a SSW swell out of 195º at 3.9' and it was a good 3' to 4' and everyone got some fun ones! A s we drove from Medford to Crescent City, we stopped in Hiouchi, a little berg not that far from the coast.  We wandered down to the Smith River (#2) and watched as it wended it's way to the sea.  We considered floating all the way to the beach, but we had a lot of stuff we didn't want to chance getting wet... Wetsuit Repair Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... It's sunny...  We'll give you that.  But the wind is getting fierce and the locals tell us that 20kts is nothing special and it can get to 30 with no trouble at all.   It's also almost sideshore...  That is, it's almost offshore and depending on which beach you pick, it might be actually offshore.  The drops coming off the manes of the waves are like buckshot and we swear they're harder than the spray at home... It is cold.  Day one:  It was 49.  Cold but a lot like the colder days at home.  With gloves, hood and booties it wasn't bad.                Day two:   Felt a tad cooler and the wind was a bit brighter.  Not bad though.  Ducked through an outside and came out with a dry head of hair when we removed our hoods!                 Day three:  Today the wind was kicking up and the water had dropped maybe three or four degrees.  Saying around 45.  Mr. Christian and the Professor rode One of the longest smallest waves ever ridden at South Be

Sometimes On Saturday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... We'll be on the road next week to check out the surf with Jah Morgan and Mr. Christian in Crescent City and the area up in Northern California. There will be a report a week from Monday if we can get our fingers unfrozen.  We thought it was cold today...  HA! Yes, we have:         A 4/3 wetsuit         booties         gloves         A hood         A bucket of coffee Should we be able to commandeer a computer, we might try to send out a message...  from the hot tub... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... #1   The gates to the Hermosa Pier were locked.  Was the surf so bad that they refused to open the pier? S o, visibility was limited to less than 3 miles, with heavy clouds and light drizzle.  Winds were out of the west by 4 to 7kts and the sea surface was rough and chopped up.  The air temp was 58.5º and the water is 63.3º.  Low tide was early at 5:11am -0.4' and high tide follows at 11:41am +3.4'.  We have a SSW swell out of 200º at 2.6' and it was 2' to 3', but mushy and pretty sad... T hat didn't stop a few learners (#2) from venturing out in the slop and trying to snag a few... S eems like electrical mayhem was rampant this week as one of the lights on the pier (#3) was knocked over from it's pedestal...  On a happier note Brother's O.G. will be open mañana at it's usual time...  Coffee? W e took a bike ride this morning and on the return trip spotted these Canada Geese (#4) rooting in the grass for grubs near Veteran's

Lost Boys & Co... O nce again, overwhelming our powers of ratiocination, an outrageous outage of ruin and electrical disassociation occurred during the wee hours as someone or something ran into the wall at Brother's Burritos leaving the electrical service in tatters!  But fear not!  We immediately dispatched our team of crack investigators to see if there were any cracks.  Finding evidence of an hit and run, they turned their attention to the electrical service which had been severed by the violent impact.  #1 We find Doc ? and Detective Leko, reconnoitering the scene.  They quickly decided it was most likely not an aircraft... W ell, it was cloudy this morning and LAX could have very well been obscured by the 5 miles visibility.  Also winds were onshore, though light and the sea surface was smooth to rippled.  The air temperature was 60.0º and the water is 63.1º.  High tide was at 10:58am +3.6' and low tide will be at 3:42pm +1.9'.  We have a SW swell out of 220º at 2

Lost Boys & Co... W e get used to folks facing the camera and mugging for the photo.  Sometimes it works to see someone walking away taking their smiles and thoughts with them...  (#1)  Emileep, the Professor and Doc ? smiling and thinking about hitting the surf... H eavy clouds and drizzles this morning with winds out of the west from 2kts to 5kts and some swirling texture on the water.  The air temperature was 61.4º and the water is 63.1º.  High tide at 10:18am +3.8' and low tide was at 3:19pm +1.6'.  Tides flip day after tomorrow.  We have a SSW swell out of 205º at 2.6' and it was 2' to 3', but we couldn't make it look good enough to venture out.  Later in the morning Capitán Donaldó, took a chance and caught a few good ones mostly to himself... S pring in the South Bay is a typically gray affair.  But even in the grayness there is contrast and some interesting greens, whites and the almost red sand in #2.  Sal the paddleboarder took these pics and his p

Lost Boys & Co... I t's a Monday.  Things are relatively quiet.  Let's take over the Pacific... We'll start with the Admiralty (#1)  Actually, it's the Professor and Doc ? tweeking their mustaches and speaking in pidgin French, in the manner of most admirals.  (Photo Credit:  Don't Walk Away René Evette) They went out, despite reports of less than epic conditions and proceeded to scare the shit out of everyone else in the water...  They claimed the Pacific for Hermosa Beach and celebrated with burritos and strong coffee...  The fact that Boris is back made the whole affair official and caused the surrender of Mexico... C loudy this morning and looked like it wanted to rain.  Only because it's California did it hesitate.  Winds were out of the SE, E, S and basically were spinning out of control at 4 to 6kts.  The sea surface was smooth to textured.  The air temperature was 61.0º and the water is 63.3º.  High tide is at 9:41am +3.9' and low tide will be at

Lost Boys & Co... B usy out there this morning as the RUHS squad (#1) prepped for next week's contest against La Mira Costa.  In a brilliant moment of coaching expertise and uncommon sense, Coach Duncan Avery summoned his top surfers over the last three to four years and had them compete against our varsity team.  The results were both revealing and spectacular.  You can tell the alumni were in fine form as they joked on the beach before hitting the surf.  Here we have Tate Curran and Kyle Beatty (#2) describing how intimidating Sapphire was back in the day.  Mainly, not the surf, but the old guard who had no notion of letting the young Turks bang on the door... I t was gray and the water had quite a significant texture as the wind was light but consistent out of the west at 3 to 5kts.  The air temp was 58.3º, but felt cooler in the gray and the water was actually warmer at 63.7º.  High tide was at 7:38am +4.3' and low tide followed at 1:43pm +0.4'.  There was a tempera

Lost Boys & Co... O ne way or another aren't we always fighting the battle of Puebla?  You know if the Mexicans had lost, the next place the French were headed was the United States...  So maybe a "thank you" is in order... G ray this morning with the RUHS surf class in full tilt (#1).   7 miles visibility and winds were light out of the SE.  The sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 63.0º and the water is 62.8º.  High tide was at 5:42am +4.3' and low tide was at 12:30pm -0.0'.  We have a SW swell out of 220º at 3.0' and it was a fun 3' to 4' and Tarsan was in good form as he rail grabbed and took the low road for some long rides... S o how much does getting the tips of your eyebrows and lashes tinted cost?  Well. don't ask Georgianna (#2) because she just goes out in the sun and they do that naturally.  Georgie is from Canada and surfs with our friends up in Tofino.  Got too cold for a lot of the surfers up there and she&#

Lost Boys & Co... S o on this gray morning we start off with Mr. Christian (#1) walking casually to the nose and making it look like all in a day's surf, which it was.  Winds started out from the SE by 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 58.0º and the water is 60.6º.  It was still pretty high tide when Aaron (#2) went pig-dog for this right and pretty much made it.  Low tide is at 11:39am -0.2' and the next high tide will be at 6:42pm +4.3'.   We have a SW swell out of 231º at 3.6' and it was 3' to 5' and a tad walled, like it gets... F rank Paisano (#3) checking it out like most mornings for the last 50 years.  He's the owner of Gardena Welding Supply and grew up in Gardena and went to school with Rasta Pete and the Mohicans (back when they were Mohicans).  First, you have to appreciate his ride.  Vintage rust-pink tired velocipede with original shocks, drink holder (large).  Shorts, T-shirt, flannel shirt and trucker hat...

Lost Boys & Co... I t was gray, cool and big yesterday (#1) and some folks were calling it one of the top 5 days of the year (!)  There were some mackers rolling through, with big drops and unforgiving slabs, but this morning a hazy sun shone on the proceedings and there was a light wind from the SW, but not quite enough to ripple it up.  The air temperature was 57.3º and the water is 60.3º.  Low tide was at 10:34am -0.3' and high tide is at 6:00pm +3.9'.  We had a SW swell out of 224º at 5.2' and it was 4' to 5' with some bigger outsides...  Supposed to be better organized mañana " B lack and yellow friendly fellow..." (#2)  Paul Miloe's 6'0" Weber single fin and the Professor's "Malecón" bike making a great pair at the beach... L ike Martin and Lewis, Bill and Melinda are breaking up...  who is she seeing? ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!
