Mashed Potato Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W e're closing in on Thanksgiving this week and we thought we'd start with the mashed potatoes.   This'll be a short week for the Surf & Culture Report, as we head up to Bass Lake for the annual "Turkey Dismemberment & Meeting of the Tribes."  We'll have reports on Monday & Tuesday and then (unless someone brings their laptop) we'll be out until Decembe r 1st. W e have 5 miles visibility this morning with some considerable haze under some high clouds.  The weather nazis are calling for rain tonight, but it might cloud up before the deluge.  Winds are offshore by 5.8kts and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temperature is 60.1f and the water is 62.1f.  High tide is at 6:50am +5.8' and low tide will be at 1:51pm -0.1'.  The buoy is reading 2.0' and the swell looks better than that, but the tide is so high that it's breaking right on the shore. Lost Boys & Co... M et with the Bishop Montgomery Team this morning in a practice session at Hermosa Pier.  It was pretty good!  The above photo is of Brett Balcer (ace body boarder and photographer.)  He got a great waterproof camera that looks like your basic digital unit (with three and a half inch viewfinder) and you just take it into the water and start shooting.  Let's hope he got some good shots of the Coaches! S ome high clouds this morning with 8 miles visibility and a fair amount of haze.  Winds are calm and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temp is 59.7f and the water is 59.9f dropping below 60 for the first time since May 19th!  That was a pretty good run!  High tide was at 5:15am +4.9' and low tide will follow at 11:31am +1.5'.  The buoy is reading 2.3' and the Avenues are looking almost ridable at 2' and Hermosa had some nice sets at 2' to 3'.  The water has gone back to it's usual murkiness, but it sure was clear yesterday. Lost Boys & Co... H ow's your appendix this morning?  If you're Clovis (Erica) Egnatuk that's a moot point because you don't have one.  You had one on Tuesday, but much like Bill Cosby's tonsils, it turned against you Tuesday night.  It was successfully removed and the Coach and GiGi (ATFYNTK) picked her up at the hospital this morning.  Our best to Clovis for a speedy and complete recovery. A bit of haze hanging around this morning with around 5 miles visibility.  Winds are calm and the sea surface is very glassy.  The air temp is 61.0f and the water is 60.1f  Low tide is at 10:20am +2.2' and high tide will follow at 3:46pm +4.1'.  The buoy is reading 2.6' and the waves are in the 2' to 3' range.  We surfed Hermosa 10th street this morning and it was fun.  Those slow rolling Hermosa outsides allow for some nice set-ups.  Actually, the thing that most amazed us was the clarity of the water.  It was swimming pool clear!  Almost mesmerizing..

Lost Boys & Co... Y es, the famous trio chillaxin' in front of Moe's garage.  That's Manny, Moe & Jack, not Larry Moe & Curly... S ome fog this morning with visibility ranging from 1/4mile to 10 miles.  The wind is offshore by 1.9kts and the sea surface is very glassy.  The air temperature is 59.7f and the water is 60.4f.  Low tide will be at 8:44am +2.8' and high tide will be at 2:16pm +4.5'.  Although the buoy is reading 2.6' the waves are 3' to 4' and they were really looking good at Hermosa where BMHS was part of a "Cinco de Circus" with four other high schools. T onight is the Manhattan Beach Christmas stroll and the Professor & LoLa will be riding their velocipedes down to check out the action.  If you'd like to join up, give him a call:  310-626-7014.  Estimated time of departure is around 6pm. Lost Boys & Co... A fter all of the fires, smoke and ash, it looks like we've got a bit of a respite.  The damage is incredible.  One can only imagine coming back to a scene like the one above. T he weather has started to turn back to it's typical off-shore/on-shore regimen.  Still a bit of haze in the air, dulling an otherwise clear sky.  We're calling it 19miles visibility.  You can see across the bay, but the details are a bit fuzzy.  Currently winds are calm and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temperature is 60.3f and the water is 60.8f.  Low tide is at 6:52am +3.0' (which is a pretty high, low) and high tide is at 12:49pm +5.1'.  The buoy is reading 2.0' and the surf doesn't look like it got the message.  Surf is 1' and not looking very good. T he forecast looks pretty dim as well.  We checked out the Eastern Pacific Satellite this morning and it doesn't look like we have any storm activity to the north of us in the  Gulf of Alaska.  So

S till a bit of residual smoke hanging in the air to the west and north.  Our attached photograph shows the Huntington Pier and the view from the beach.  Let's see what's in store for us this morning at the beach. A t 6am we had 15 miles visibility, obscured only by the thick band of smoke we described.  There's also a lot of the usual haze exacerbated by the inversion layers that seem to create a layer cake of moist air, smog and smoke.  Currently the winds are offshore by 1.2kts and the sea surface is pool table glassy.  The air temperature is 64.8f and the water is 61.2f.  High today is supposed to get up to around 82f, which is pretty warm for the middle of November.  We rode bikes last night and it was 75f along the strand as we peddled our asses through the drifts of ash.  Low tide is at 5:19am +2.8' and high tide will be at 11:37am +5.8'.  The buoy is reading 2.3' and the waves are 1' and poor. I t was so poor that the surf cont

Lost Boys & Co... A nother beautiful day in the Southland, marred only by the smoke coming around the corner of the bay from the Montecito fires.  Unfortunately, the smoke does cause some rather spectacular sunsets, as we've included here.  The real news is that we've spent the last few days populating a blog with our own brand of surf & culture.  You can find it at lostboysco.blogspot.com .  It includes everything you read here and incidental posts and photos that we'll be sending in from time to time.  You can also make comments and be as brilliant as you want. S o we have 20 miles visibility, even with the smoke we mentioned.  Winds are calm and looking to stay that way for most of the morning.  The air temp is 62.2f, looking to warm up considerably and the water is 61.9f and considering this is November, it will only go down.  High tide is really high at 9:01am +6.9' and low tide will follow at 4:24pm -1.2'.  If you're looking for some clams, that&#

Lost Boys & Co... Thumbscrew Thursday Surf & Culture Report Thursday, November 13, 2008 G ood morning!  We got a little let down this morning when they canceled the Bishop Montgomery surf contest against San Pedro.  We even had a secret weapon to help the girls out.  The attachment shows LoLa our secret weapon doing a little preparatory work in the Hanalei shorebreak.  The good news is that the contest has been rescheduled for Monday.  Be there at 6:30am, wetsuit on and ready to go... M eanwhile we have clear skies, 10 miles visibility and a pretty heavy haze with a fair amount of smog right on the deck.  Winds are offshore by 3.9kts and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temp is 62.2f and the water is 62.6f - still pretty nice when the sun is out.  High tide is very high at 8:20am +6.8' and low tide is very low at 3:34pm -1.2'.  Somewhere in the middle there could be some good waves.  The wind will be the determining factor.  The swell is registering 3.9' and the

Armistice Day Tuesdy Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Tuesday, November 11, 2008 Well, we're closing in on the 11th month, 11th day and 11th hour and thinking about all of those veterans over the years. Quite a parade. Let's honor their commitment and see what we can do to keep us out of trouble in the future. A beautiful day and lots of folks not working this morning. 25 miles visibility and clear skies with little haze. Winds are off shore by 3.9kts and the sea surface is glassy clean. The air temperature is 59.2f and the water is 61.5f. Let's see how long we can stay in the 60's! High tide is at 7:10am +6.1' and low tide will be at 2:04pm -0.5'. So throughout the morning it's going to be dropping pretty quickly. The buoy is reading 4.3' and the waves are a solid 4' when the break. This morning's session featured a lot of sitting and waiting for the right wave. They needed some size to hit the sand bar on the outside of the break. Sting Ginther and the Professor

Lost Boys & Co... Monday, November 10, 2008 Attached you'll find a shot from Sting Ginther showing the crew gathered around the Professor's new stick. Stick around and we'll identify all of the unusual suspects... Beautiful morning with nary a cloud in the sky and 25 miles visibility. As opposed to yesterday's onshore blow we have a consistent off-shore flow at 5.9kts and the sea surface has a bit of roll left over, but is actually pretty smooth. The air temperature is 59.0f and the water is down to 62.4f, which isn't bad considering that sometimes after a blow like that we lose 5 degrees. High tide is at 6:41am +5.7' and it takes a big drop to low at 1:23pm +0.2. In fact this is the last plus low tide for the week. It's all minuses in the afternoons the rest of the week. The buoy is reading 6.6' and the surf is a steady 5' to 7' and actually looking pretty good. The Professor sneaked out at Sapphire and got 7 waves before anyone els
Lost Boys & Co... Filler-Up Friday Surf & Culture Report Friday, November 07, 2008 Apparently young Blake Cole was bitten by a seal and Paver was wondering if this is much of an anomaly. In our experience, since he is the only person we know to have ever been nipped by a piniped, we'll say "Yeah, it's an anomaly." Now, even though we have no empirical evidence, we have heard several generalities about this kind of thing. Looking through the web validated our notions: Human health risks: Seal pups may inflict a painful bite. Seal bites have been associated with a severe bacterial infection known as "seal finger". Other potential zoonoses include salmonella and seal pox. ( J15 .20.w1) Medical attention should always be sought following a seal bite and prophylactic antibiotics may be recommended.( V.w26 ) Of course "Seal Finger" and "Seal Pox" don't sound like the kind of thing you want to contract

Thick-Skinned Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Thick-Skinned Thursday Surf & Culture Report Thursday, November 06, 2008 Sorry for the late report today. The Professor is coaching the BMHS surf team along with Vince Toyama and after the competition (which BMHS won quite handily by the way) he went for a surf with the Coach and TJ. But we get ahead of ourselves... Crystal clear visibility this morning (at least 25miles) and a cloudless morning sky. (Note: we're using the 6am stats even though it's closer to 6pm.) Winds are offshore by 3.9kts and the sea surface is glassy. The air temp is 64.6f and the water is 64.4f. High tide is at 5:22am +3.9' and low tide will follow at 10:22am +3.1'. The surf is hitting the buoy at 3.3' and it's was hitting the beach at about 3' to 4'. Now the surf would be a lot better, except for the fact that the Professor just got a new blade and has effectively clobbered any size to this swell. We did get some good waves this morning, with

Magna Carta Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Magna Carta Monday Surf & Culture Report Monday, November 03, 2008 O kay, after you get out of the water from surfing tomorrow what are you going to do? Yes, you can dry off and put on your clothes... No, you're not going to go to Starbucks and have that half-cafe mocha frappacino with extra cream. You're going to get your sorry ass to the polls and VOTE, like every other decent American. And even if you vote exactly the opposite way we do, we're still hoping you'll go down there and cast your ballot. As our mentor and role model Al Capone once said, "Vote early and vote often." Partly cloudy conditions this morning with 17miles visibility and a bit of low lying haze. Winds are offshore, but variable to 3.9kts and the sea surface looks oddly chopped for these wind conditions. The air temperature is 61.9f and the water is 64.4f. High tide is at 11:09am +4.7' and low tide will be at 7:43pm +0.8'. The buoy is readin
