Hasta La Vista Cardon Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... B esides good surf there are a couple of other things that can make a good surf trip.  One is the food and the other is the crew.  Photo #1 was Thursday's entrée.  It was an onion broth served in a red-hot stone bowl rimmed with chicken, shrimp, beef, queso amarillo, a napalé leaf, a relleño chile and a zucchini.  Yow-zum some good grinds... and that was just Thursday...!! L ookin' a lot like the summer we never had this morning!  15 miles visibility with an inversion layer you could walk on and otherwise cloudless skies, but nothing like "clear."  Winds were calm all morning and the sea surface had a bit of bump.  The air temp was 67.5˚, going up and the water was 64.6˚, 67.7˚ @ the Hermosa Pier.  High tide was at 7:41am +3.7' and low tide will follow at 12:10pm +2.8'.  We have a SSW swell out of 198˚ at 3.3' and it's 2' to 3' at the beach.  Rasta Pete and Jimmy Thomas were standouts this morning on the north side of the

Lost Boys & Co... O ur first photo is the young, enthusiastic, beer drinking cohort of the Cardon adventure.  We have absolutely no idea why they were in the hot tub considering the ocean was 88˚, the pool was 90+˚ and the hot tub was "soup."  From left to right:  Jeff, Josh, Angele (with Jeff, known collectively as "the Kardashians"), PW, Wheatley, Andrew and Sammy.  (Photo credit:   Phil Oglesby for La Opinion) Y ou could'a fooled us, but it looked like summer this morning.  That is until you hit the 63.1˚ water and remembered where you were.  20 miles visibility under clear skies and a light south wind at 3kts.  A slight bump on the water, but relatively smooth.  The air temp was 64.3˚ and high tide was at 6:57am +3.4'.  Low tide was also in the am at 10:53am +3.0', so things were a bit bunched.  We have a SSW swell out of 202˚ at 3.0'.  There were some fun ones at the Hermosa Pier, if you were patient and a couple even if you weren't.

Lost Boys & Co... S o here's a nice late afternoon shot of the premises.  Every room has an ocean view, including the dining hall, the ping-pong table veranda and the brass ring-swing hook court.  You don't know what that is?  It's the most addictive game since internet solitaire...  we'll explain later (and even then you might not get it.) C lear this morning with 20 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface had a bit of left over bump.  The air temperature was 63.6˚ and the water was a disappointing (even for Fogust) 62.8˚.  Low tide was at 9:05am +2.9' and high tide was at 3:56pm +4.7'.  There was a swinging south tinged swell out of the west 250˚ at 2.6'.  It was 1' to 2' with some bigger outsides.  Fun but not deluxe... W e don't always drink beer, but when we do it's actually margaritas.  Oh yeah, there's a view from the pool too...  Enjoying the view (and the margaritas) Sam, James Wheatley, the Professor, PW, and

Lost Boys & Co... S o here are the accommodations at the Cardon Adventureland Senior Adult Palapa.  Danger Boy and the Professor would get in shape in the morning by jumping from bed-to-bed twenty times.  They only had five mid-air collisions the entire week!  (But three in one day)  Of course Danger Boy hit his shin on the corner of the bed every morning and by the end of the week was in danger of contracting gangrene...  or sharks... P uffy clouds this morning and 19 miles visibility.  Winds were on from the crack of dawn, by 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 64.5˚ and the water continues to drop to 62.6˚, registering 65˚ even at Hermosa Pier.  Low tide was at 7:48am +2.5' and high tide will be at 2:39pm +4.8'.  We have a SSW swell out of 196˚ at 2.6' and it's 1' to almost 3' on most beaches.  It's supposed to get better as the week processes... Lost Boys & Co... S o, we're back from our surf trip to Cardon (near Mazatlan) and we'll share a few pics with you this week.  On our first morning there we watched the sun peek over the Sierra Gigantes, while we padded down to the beach.  Air: 80˚  Sand: 80˚  Water: (an unbelievable) 88˚ or 20˚ warmer than we had left. O f course on the other end of the scale is So. Cal.  This morning we had 3 miles visibility and foggy hazy skies.  Winds were out of the SW by 4.5kts and the sea surface had a major tack running.  The air temperature was a brisk 62.3˚ and the water was 62.8˚.  You might think that was bad, but Captain Donny who ran a chase boat in the Catalina Classic Paddle , said the water was 61˚ at the island.  Low tide was at 7:03am +1.9' and high tide will be at 1:39pm +5.0'.   We have a SSW swell out of 200˚ at 2.0' and it's 1' to 2' at most local spots. P hoto #2 is the basic set up.  You start just a little left of the point you can see on t

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have Ché finishing up his personal ride for his trip to Cardon, Sinaloa, Mexico.  The Becker crew with some hangers-on is making their way to the fabled left.  Since they questioned the authenticity of the experience, Danger Boy and The Professor will be making the trip to compare it to Saladitas and the Ranch.  They will prepare a full report.   I t is rumored that a well-known manufacturer of pool tables looked at our ocean and said, "I wish I could make those tables as flat as that ocean."  Well, he probably could, but he'd have to include the fog we had this morning and the limited visibility.  Winds were out of the SW by 3.0kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temp was 62.3˚ and the water is 64.4˚.  High tide was late at 7:05am +3.5' and low tide will follow at 11:29am +2.5'.  We have a SSW swell out of 206˚ at 2.0'.  It's 1' to smaller and great for knee-knocking... O vercast like usual and 5 miles visibility.  Winds out of the south by 2kts and the sea surface was glassy until the south wind turned on.  The air temp was 63.6˚ and the water is 63.3˚, which we find to be a dismal turn of events for a season typically known as "summer."  Low tide is at 9:58am +2.5' and high tide will follow at 4:54pm +5.6'.  We have a weak west swell out of 264˚ at 2.0'.  It's 1' and poor and now it's windy...  Maybe it's a good day to dive around the rocks!  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

C loudy this morning and about 7 miles visibility as we hit the water in Hermosa.  Winds were variable from the SW to the SE at about 5kts and the sea surface sported a bit of a bump.  The air temp was 61.8˚ and the water was 65.1˚.  Low tide was early at 5:18am +0.3' and high tide followed at 11:41am +4.7'.  We had a SSW swell out of 202˚ at 2.6' and there was a window from about 8am to 10am that had some good waves from 1' to 3'.  We saw Brittany Bardon and Anna Barclay getting some nice waves.  Brittany was on a Stewart Colin Phillips model with super thin rails and a step deck nose.  Also rockin' the step deck was Ethan Pezzolo as he proceeded to
