Sometimes On Saturday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W hen we included the surfboard racks in the Brother's patio remodel, we though they were just that.  But it turns out that they are also Razor Scooter stanchions (#1).  When we asked who thought this was a good idea Katie Sarah Sophia Isadora Jackson-Browne said she thought of it and her brother "Gate Mouth" Jackson-Browne (#2) seconded the motion... S unny and bright this morning with unlimited visibility.Winds were off by 3 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 50.9ºF/15.0ºC and the water is 61.0ºF/16.1ºC.  High tide was at 7:57am +5.1' and low tide follows at 1:38pm 1.7'.  We have a WSW swell out of 240º at 2.3' and it was 3' to a little bigger and kinda, sorta wally crashy... Y ou just don't see the "Laughing Bear" (#3) much any more...  Thinking it was a franchise for brakes? Y es, in some places they still celebrate Columbus' Day (#4).  Which reminds us, we'll be reconnoitering Sicily f

Lost Boys & Co... A gathering of the tribe, as the Sruf Familia does brekky in their own inimitable manner...  From L. to R.:  CVS, Santi Jet, Doc ? (mending quite nicely by the way) The Professor, Tarsan, LoLa, Jah Morgan, Danger Girl and Steve-O.  Not shown Chris and Burnsy, who by virtue of her skill and pluck got the dump today in a close race with Jah and Santi... M om still dresses them alike (#2).  Mom is 98. A beautiful day with 15 miles visibility under a hazy sun.  Winds were offshore by 2 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 50.9ºF/10.5ºC and the water was 61.0ºF/16.1ºC.  The Celsius/Fahrenheit question was raised by the crew in the water and they unanimously voted on Fahrenheit.  We'll try one more day, but it's not looking good for the Centigrade group.  High tide was at 6:54am +4.4' and low tide turns quick at 11:49am +2.9'.  We have a SSW swell out of 202º at 3.3' and it was 3' to 4' with some nice peaks all along th

Lost Boys & Co... W hen we first took a look (#1), it was 3' with some sets and some lulls long enough to paddle your butt into the lineup and get ready.  20 minutes later, it was thumpingly consistent and tried smashing our longboarding ass into the pier.  As you can see it was beautifully clear and winds were calm.  The air temperature was 49.9F/9.94C and in the water 62.4F/16.88C.  High tide was at 6:08am +3.9' and a quick tide change to low at 10:09am +3.3'.  We have a SSW swell out of 195º at 4.3' and it was 3' to 5+ and if you could get past the deep inside section, you had it made... T hat (#2) friends is an International Harvester.  Famous for tractors, combines and cotton pickers they also made these great surf vehicles, although in all fairness to the IH folks, they didn't KNOW that's what they were doing.  Jah, scored this beater and will be refurbishing it and in no time we'll be asking for a ride...  Call it "Cherry Pie"... Lost Boys & Co... " T hings in the viewfinder are larger than they appear."  (#1)  Close-up of our favorite bird, the Seahawk... Y ou can tell when it's a day for watching and not necessarily a day for surfing.  For one thing it blew like crazy yesterday, churning the sea into a roiling mash-up.  It was offshore this morning, but there was still some residual bump.  Secondly, we noted that there was no "Familia" correspondence this morning.  This could be because Doc ? might have had his ? out of order.  Regardless, he was NOT going in the water today.  But rumor has it that Aaron and CVS charged on the south side of the pier early.  By 9am it was blowing from the north 7 to 15kts and the sea surface was bumping again.  The air was 45.5º at checkout and the water was 64.0º.  We know it was 45 in the air because Jetski had us turn on his furnace to warm his 39º walls.  Low tide was at 7:46am +3.3' and high tide was at 2:24pm +5.3'.  We have a SSW swel

Lost Boys & Co... O h my, where do we start...?  Maybe first thing in the morning with the Redondo Team (#1) charging on some 3' to 4' grinders.  A beautiful morning with 10 miles visibility and 3 to 5kt offshore winds, making for a smooth sea surface.  But 45 minutes later the fog rolled in (#2) and you could barely see the end of the pier!  The air temperature was 57.3º and the water is a Fall tainted 65.1º.  Low tide made things pretty hollow at 6:23am +2.8' and high tide isn't until 1:03pm +5.7'.  Things started out with a SSW swell out of 195º at 3.9' and 3' to 4' crunchers, but just kept creeping up until it was head-high and throwing some serious water around. It's supposed to be bigger mañana.  That brings us to Part II of our story... H ere (#3) we have the former and current Welterweight Champion of the over 70 Division, DOC ?! There are several stories here, but we are going to stick to the tale which most closely resembles the truth,

Lost Boys & Co... #1)  T he Professor cutting back on this little groveler last October, getting ready for "Spooky Surf."  Been hearing rumbles about this year's event... S orry to report that it was bad yesterday and it's worse today.  Cloudy, trying not to rain.  Winds are onshore by 5 to 10kts and the sea surface is churning.  The air was 61.5º and the water is 67.8º.  High tide is at 10:44am +6.3' and low tide follows at 5:32pm -0.2'.  We have a sloppy SSW swell out of 206º at 2.6' and it's half of that in the surf line.  Maybe mañana... J ah Morgan (#2) vying for the spookiest re-entry, doing a little bottom turning in the splash cycle... S uper Ché and his assistant Barry Santos (#3) get ready to smooth out some of the irregularities on the platform. C loudy and looked like it might rain all day.  5 miles visibility.  Winds were light onshore at 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was textured.  The air temp was 63.0º and the water was 68.2º.  High tide was at 10:11am +6.2' and low tide follows at 4:41pm -0.1'.  It's a SSW swell out of 203º at 2.0' and it was 1' to 2' and poor to lousy... N ot quite sure what stood out the most about this photo (#2)?  Is it the sheer size of this lobster, which tipped the scales at 26.8lbs or might it be Denny O'Brien's teeth?  It looks like Denny shunned the use of the mallet and went straight after the bug with his choppers.  We had our staff dental expert look at this photo and she couldn't decide how one would even start to remedy this bite.  He is smiling though, through the periodontal chaos in his skull... ✠ "When the surf bre

Lost Boys & Co... W e really rely on electricity.  We know this because when we don't have any, you don't get a surf report.  Ice cream gets a little soft, no snap to the pickles and the broccoli gets a tad flaccid.  But don't worry, we paid the bill and whatever Edison had to do, they did it... W hat Edison didn't do was provide a little more sun today.  Visibility was 7 to 8 miles and the sky was cloudy.  Winds were out of the west (and the seagulls concurred with that assessment) and actually diminished a bit as the morning trickled away.  The air temperature at checkout was 63.3º and the water is a surprising 68.2º at the buoy.  High tide is at 9:41am +5.9' and low tide will be at 3:57pm +0.2' going into the minuses for the rest of the week.  We have a SSW swell out of 202º at 2.6' and it was 2' to almost 3' on the rising tide. D on't need to tell you about the spectacular pyrotechnics on Monday night!  Here's (#'s 1 & 2) a co

Lost Boys & Co... A beautiful morning as the sun came chuckling over the Hermosa foothills and warming the 58º air, which made the 66.4º water seem like a good deal.  Winds were steady offshore at 4 to 5kts and the sea surface was brushed smooth.  High tide was at 7:58am +4.2' and low tide followed at 12:46pm +2.8' as the tides regain their more regular sine curve.  We have a SSW swell out of 199º at 2.6' and it was a solid 3' and a bit crunchy after the initial drop-in...  (#1) Jake Kislinger, finding a corner to mow down...
