Viewfinder Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

"Things in the viewfinder are larger than they appear."  (#1)  Close-up of our favorite bird, the Seahawk...

You can tell when it's a day for watching and not necessarily a day for surfing.  For one thing it blew like crazy yesterday, churning the sea into a roiling mash-up.  It was offshore this morning, but there was still some residual bump.  Secondly, we noted that there was no "Familia" correspondence this morning.  This could be because Doc ? might have had his ? out of order.  Regardless, he was NOT going in the water today.  But rumor has it that Aaron and CVS charged on the south side of the pier early.  By 9am it was blowing from the north 7 to 15kts and the sea surface was bumping again.  The air was 45.5º at checkout and the water was 64.0º.  We know it was 45 in the air because Jetski had us turn on his furnace to warm his 39º walls.  Low tide was at 7:46am +3.3' and high tide was at 2:24pm +5.3'.  We have a SSW swell, with a healthy dose of NW windswell thrown in at 6.6' and it was 6' to 8' and fatter and meaner than you might think...

Now if you were clever there were some spots that had possibilities.  Take the Horseshoe Pier for instance (#2).  The waves were neatly manicured and this guy paddling out had just scored a left that he had to exit so he wouldn't land on the rocks inside.  If the rocks weren't enough, you had the cops on the walkway and the lifeguards on the pier to contend with.  They all probably thought it looked pretty good too.   Also, on the south side of the Redondo Pier there was a right that Scott Underwood was checking out that was inconsistent, but looked rideable.  Kinda close to those nasty creosote soaked pilings though...

In Hermosa we waited for our burritos and watched this guy (#3) get worked on about three outside maulers.  Then this left came through with a right attached at the other end and he made it as far as he could before getting washed to the beach.

Of course you always have to check Sapphire (#4) to see who ditched school/work/chores to get some action.  As far as the beaches it had possibilities, but it also had this rip next to the rocks that once you got through the whitewater inside, would drag your ass out past the rocks and into the shipping lanes.  There were four guys out (make that three) and they appeared to be struggling...
