Another New Year's Eve Eve Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... A pparently, this is the recommended method of relaxation in the Baltic regions and Asia Minor.  We had some reservations about posting this pic, should it suddenly go viral and brined sofa lounging become the rage.  But we'll take our chances...  Mostly because ashtrays aren't included... C old this morning under cloudless skies and 20 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the NNE by 3.6kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 44.4º and felt 10º cooler.  The water was 60.1º and it felt colder as well.  Low tide was at 6:13am +2.5' and high tide was at 11:47am +4.4'.  We have a WSW swell out of 244º at 3.6' and it was a good 3' to 4', but not quite as peaky as Tuesday...  Check it mañana... S ince we'll be hard pressed to get a report out tomorrow and you'll probably be too busy to read it anyway, here's the Lost Boys Itinerary for next couple of days... A.   Check out the surf at Hermosa at 9am Thursday t

Lost Boys & Co... We Should Have Taken The Stairs Dept.:             We have no idea why we even read these things.  But it was sooo compelling...  Like, "if the doors fail to open OR the elevator  becomes inoperative:"  What if it's inoperative and the doors open anyway?  At any rate we will NOT become alarmed, but we will use the button marked "ALARM".  Which somehow seems to suggest that we are somewhat alarmed or ready to be.  We're not even gonna look for the telephone on the excellent chance that it's not "furnished."  But the instruction that really got us was the caution to "...not attempt to force doors or hatch open .  It was kinda chicken or the egg - "hatch open" had never even remotely occurred to us.  How long do we have to incubate in this thing... A lmost 15 miles visibility under high clouds, with mostly sun.  Winds were out of the NE by 3.2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was a chi

Lost Boys & Co... N ot that there's anything wrong with your old life, but you might want to look at Marie Kondo's "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up."  With our latest influx of Christmas gifts blowing out our dresser drawers, we decided it was time to come to grips with our T-shirt situation.  Not to mention the "...calm, motivated mindset" tidying can inspire.  What she doesn't mention is the angst you have to go through, throwing away all those classic t-shirts that you got as swag at various events over the last 20/30/40 years.  She suggests you lay them out, thank them for all the pleasure they gave to you, wish them well and then throw them out.   No, don't use them for rags, don't frame them, throw them out.  However, she didn't say you couldn't take a photo of them before you sail them into the bin...  This was a tough one... 15 Miles visibility under high, medium and low clouds.  20% chance of rain, doesn't make it

Lost Boys & Co... A bit high tide and fat all along the beach.  Hard to paddle in as you can see in these two shots.  In photo #2 you can see that sweet fan of white water heading right into the pier.  If you were in the right spot and got an outside it was pretty exhilarating...  If not you got a lot of paddling exercise...  Actually, Jetski thought he was good on both counts... S o it was partly cloudy in the skies and 15 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 5.2kts and the sea surface still has a bit of residual bump from the winds.  It was 51.1º in the air and 62.4º in the water.  High tide was at 7:42am +6.8' and low tide followed at 2:49pm -1.3'.  We have a diminishing west swell out of 276º at 5.2'and it seemed more consistent and stronger in the surfline with 4' to 6' waves and even some bigger outsides... MERRY CHRISTMAS to all and we hope you have a joyous Christmas day.  Tell those you love, that you DO in fact love them.  Don't be stingy wi

Lost Boys & Co... A little wild foaminess we found on the web.  It was pretty wild yesterday... N ot so wild with the wind today but still a bit woolly in the surfline.  20 miles visibility, with all the smog blown to Utah.  Winds are still on but now around 9.2kts and the sea surface is bumped, but not spraying.  The air temperature is 57.3º and the water is 62.8º, driven down closer to 60 near shore.  High tide was at 7:00am +6.7' and low tide will follow at 2:07pm -1.1'.  We have a west swell out of 264º at 7.2' and that's pretty close with some bigger outsides.  Certainly overhead... W et, wild and damn-near-frozen we have this martini in a ice glass.  If you take too long sipping this thing, it melts in your hand, not in your mouth.  We found this one in "Barbacoa" in Boise, Idaho...  Yes Virginia, civilization has come to Boise...  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Tornadic Winds Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S torm Watch 2015 on this Winter Solstice!  The waves aren't so red-hot, but the wind is pretty crazy!  Here we have a shot of Hermosa Beach and the surf is getting blown through.  Winds were point out of the west in the 20kt range, gusting to almost 30kts!  Even the seagulls were hunkered down for the duration.  Kids were riding their skateboards/bikes to the end of the pier and then flying back at mach 3... S o, it's like 3 miles visibility and the sky is hard with low rain clouds, though not precipitating at the moment.  The air temperature is not bad at 60.1º and the water is steady at 63.1º.  High tide was at 6:18am +6.5' and no reports of tide/wind damage.  Low tide will be at 1:23pm -0.7'.  We have a galloping west swell out of 282º at 6.6' and it's 5' to 8' and wild and woolly... P addle Out for Danger Boy:  The family has requested that we do a paddle out on January 10th.  As you can well imagine there's a lot going on

Menorah Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... L iving in Southern California, we get to enjoy a diversity of holiday traditions.  Like this surfboard Menorah in Malibu... 12 miles visibility under some high clouds with rain predicted for the evening.  Winds were smartly offshore by 2.2kts and the sea surface had a bit of easterly ripple.  The air temperature was 48.6º driven down by that wind and the sea was holding at 63.1º, but cooler in the surf zone.  High tide was at 5:34am +6.1' and low tide will be at 12:36pm -0.1'.  We have a WSW swell out of 250º at 3.3', jumping to a solid 4' on the beach... A Lithuanian Christmas features baked fish, piles of mashed potatoes with mushroom gravy and boiled beets.  For dessert they had these gingerbread cakes covered in powdered sugar on a Yule Log cake with mushroom cookies covered with a thin candy shell.  Of course they call them "Medauninkas Pyragas Su Gryby Sausainiais." T hen there's Santa Claus.  For a guy who lives at the North

Lost Boys & Co... A few more memories of the Danger Boy... 1.   Can't remember if he got stitches in this one or not, but when we got home we decided that we needed some tequila to settle our nerves.  Actually, no one was nervous.  It just seemed like a good thing to do considering the circumstances... 2.   High in the White Mountains checking out the Bristle Cone Pines, some of the oldest living things on earth.  This was part of the trip up the Owen's Valley and into the back country.  The gentlemen doffing their Stetsons for the camera.  Danger Boy was arguably in his finest form.  This was his environment.  Off the road, pretty much out of touch and in the middle of nowhere. 3.   Danger Girl driving the Zamboni on her birthday, courtesy of her loving husband.  Danger Boy was a Kings fan starting in the purple and gold years.  He couldn't believe that the players would just walk into Brother's and start talking to him.  Summer before last the Kings facility in E

Y et another chilly morning with 20+ miles visibility and a few high clouds.  Winds were offshore by 2.3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 48.1º and the water was 62.8º.  Low tide was at 9:14am +2.1' and high tide will follow at 2:38pm +3.8'.  We have a weak wes t swell out of 257º at 2.6' and it was on the small side of 2' to 3'.  Forecast says there should be some better waves starting Sunday...  We're waiting H appy Hour (in name only this week) will be at "Ortega 120" at 5pm.  1814 S. Pacific Coast Hwy. between PV Blvd. and Prospect.  The plan is to hoist a few to the memory of Danger Boy and then proceed to the Vigil at 7pm.  They are rumored to have an excellent tequila bar... 2.   Ronnie, Wheatley, Tio Ted, Danger Boy and Ché obviously up to something.  DB is the only one who can't keep a straight face... 3.   A da

Lost Boys & Co... 1.   The only time we ever saw Danger Boy at a loss for words was when we sat with a research wind tunnel expert at breakfast at TNT's Hawaiian place.  The guy went on for a full 45 minutes about the physics involved, filling in the blanks with equations on a napkin.  You could see DB trying to process all of this and finally he just short circuited and we had to carry him to the car... C loudless and bright this morning with 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were fresh offshore by 2.7kts and the sea surface was smooth with a slight wind ruffle.  The air temp was 48.3º and the water was 63.1º.  Low tide was at 7:35am +2.5' and high tide will follow at 1:05pm +4.3'.  We have a WSW swell out of 255º at 2.6' and it was 2' to 3' with some bigger outsides.  Supposed to get better next week for the break... 2.   Danger Boy on fire.  For some reason this doesn't even look outrageous... 3.   Surveying his domain from his condo complex high above the

Lost Boys & Co... 1.   On a deep pocket, swinging his butt around a nice Knob Hill/Tres Palmas right.  #'s 1 & 4 show his commitment to going deep. C older than brisk this morning with 20 miles visibility and a few high clouds early.  Winds were offshore by 6.5kts and the sea surface had a bit of offshore ripple.  The air said 42.2º, but we're calling it colder with the wind chill.  In the water it was 63.3º, but Roddy Williams pulled a 61º at the Hermosa Pier.  Low tide was early at 6:04am +2.6' and high tide was in the am at 11:51am +4.8'.  We have a west swell out of 261º at 2.6', but it was a bit bigger with 3' to 4' waves working on the rising tide... 2.   He never minded going left if the situation presented itself.  This was a chilly Sapphire morning, but he acquitted himself well in the big lefts at Cardon in Mexico a couple of summer's ago. 3.   Interesting wrist action in this one and #4.  Looks like he wasn't quite done paddling.

Lost Boys & Co... 1.   Danger Girl and DB in a snuggle.  Looks like Happy hour is a theme, so we'll go with it... 2 .  After a long day on Lake Guija in El Salvador, Danger Boy and the Professor engaged in some hoomalimali with ukuleles, William Lawson's and insect repellent.  (L to R:  The Professor, Danger Boy, Meme, Ché and Béto.) A cold one this morning, with winds blowing out of the east by 7.7kts and not a cloud in the sky.  A light offshore ripple on mostly smooth water bringing the air temperature down to 39º at 6am and not in a hurry to warm up all morning.  The water was 63.7º and seemed relatively warm in light of the air.  High tide was at 10:55am +5.4' and low tide is late at 6:15pm -0.2' for some after work dredgers.  We had a west swell out of 278º at 6.6' and it was a solid 4' to 5' on a diminishing swell.  3.   While in Guatemala at Natan's Resort, Danger Boy & company took the happy hour concept to new lengths.  Getting in-count

Lost Boys & Co... W e're going to dedicate this weeks Surf & Culture Reports to Danger Boy.  Obviously, we have a ton of images of him and in a significant number he is bleeding or contused.  Yeah, well...  So, lets start there and clean up his act as we move along... #1.   There was the day when we headed down to the Cove with Gidget and Alec.  Imagine the long walk down and the trail was bit snotty in some places.  We paddled out to Little Reef, Danger Boy caught the first wave, went to the bottom and came up with three eyebrows and covered in blood.  We walked back up the trail, took off our wetsuits and deposited him at Redondo Medical on the way home... #2.   New Year's Eve and DB is in full rubber including booties, gloves and a hood.  The only skin that was showing was three-quarters of his face.  He took off on a 10th St. ledge and disappeared.  We waited... and waited... and when he finally came up his face was crimson.  Roddy Williams was in his truck, doing h
