C lose the Strand and just throw everything off!  The Professor surveys the repairs to the uneven brick pavers on the strand (#1).  The tiles they used tended to break and throw the cyclers and skaters off their games.  They're now removing the tiles and filling in with concrete to make smoother transitions...  (photo:  Jetski for World Wheels Tomorrow ) S tarted out cloudy this morning with about 5 miles visibility, then got progressively darker until the weather closed in with thunder, lightning and rain about 10am.  Just about the time Jah and Christian were hitting the water...  Winds have been fluky out of the SE and then turning more westerly.  The air temp was 53.3 and the water is 60.6.  High tide was at 6:12am +5.5' and low tide follows at 1:30pm -0.4'.  We have a west swell out of 279º at 2.6' and it was 3' to 4', but breaking really close to shore with the full tide.  As the rain began, conditions degraded and now it's a bit

Lost Boys & Co... T his image (#1) is from Clark Little on the north shore.  Clark is Brock Little's brother and has become famous in his own right for his photography of breaking waves and the shorebreak.  He's got a documentary called "Shorebreak" and it's a "must see."  In a number of images Clark has captured these little vortexes climbing up the back of breaking waves.  We've never seen this phenomenon, but you can be sure we'll be watching for it... Lost Boys & Co... T here have been people who begin crossing this bridge (#1) and never get to the other side...  It is assumed they get caught in the vines and are trapped forever.  You might ask why you would even think of crossing this span...  Well, there's surf on the other side... C loudy and windless this morning, although the sea surface was a bit bumped and there was some backwash from the tide. The air temperature was 52.2 and the water is yet 60.6.  High tide was early at 4:30am +5.2' and low tide was at 11:53am +0.4'.  We have a WSW swell out of 258º for your surfing pleasure.  Once again, despite the meager swell, it was 3' to 4' with some fun peaks.  It was bumped a bit but still got some good ones.  Kids out mañana at 8am...  See you then! T his is what Happy Hour looks like (#2) and that's before Reneé, Marisa, and Tom and Kathy showed up!  Always a good time and props to Yoshi for being the head wagon master and location supervisor!  We'

A bit cloudy this morning and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were testing several points of the compass, but light and leaving only a bit of ripplation on the surface.  The air temperature was 48.0 and the water is 60.0.  Low tide was late at 10:42am +0.9' and high tide will be at 4:42pm +3.1'.  Tides flip this week.  We have a west swell out of 268º at 2.3', but whatever bounce we're getting had it 3' on the inside and 4' on the sets...  Things are better with a bit of tide.  Expecting some rain and weather at the end of the week... A fter three changes in venue the folks at HippyTree finally decided on the Unyta Space in El Segundo.  We decided that the search for the gallery was part of the piece as a performance...  Considering, there was a SRO cr

I f Dave thought he needed ear flaps, he's lucky he wasn't in Westbrook, Maine, where it was so cold that this ice disk formed in an eddy of the river there (#2).  The water in the middle of the eddy gets colder and freezes and then starts to collect ice along the edges until you get this phenomenon.  It's one of those things th

C lear skies and cool temperatures with the air around 45 and the water holding at 60.3.  Visibility in the 20+ region and the winds were out of the NNW variable to 5kts, freshening throughout the morning.  High tide was at 9:25am +6.8' and low tide will be really low at 4:30pm -1.6' and with all that wind we had, chances are good for some sea glass scoring.  We have a west swell out of 278º at 5.9', but the tide is floating that away and it's 3' to 4' at some spots.  If you have time, wait for the tide to drop a bit and hope the wind cooperates... W indy and blowing from the northwest from 12 to 15kts and the sea surface is properly white capped.  Visibility is 20+ miles and mostly cloudless.  The air was a chilly 50.1 and the water is amazingly 60.4.  High tide is at 8:40am +7.0' and low tide is an empty toilet bowl at 3:49pm -1.8'.  We have a blustery west swell out of 274º at 7.2'.  It's in the 5' to 9' range, bumped out and ragged...  could calm down a bit for mañana so take a look... O n the back of the wind this morning the tide made it to the bike path in some spots (#2)... F og this morning (#2) and this shot up Sapphire St. actually makes it look clearer than it was.  Visibility ranged from 100yds to a quarter of a mile.  Winds were light out of the NE and there was a slight bump on the water, settling down as the morning progressed.  The air temp was 53.3 and the water is 60.3.  High tide was at 6:24am +6.2' and low tide will follow at 1:43pm -1.0'.  This morning there was a west swell out of 261º at 8.2' and it was 5' to 7' and bigger in Hermosa and spots to the north...  Should be calming down a bit in the upcoming week, although there's a big wind event forecasted for

W ind and rain on tap for most of the day.  Winds up to almost 20kts and the sea surface is rough and blown out.  The air temp is 59.9 and remarkably the water is holding at 60.8.  High tide at 5:40am +5.7' and low tide follows at 1:01pm -0.3'.  We have a west swell out of 260º at 4.9' and that will be building to over 7' during the evening.  It was 4' to 6' today and you had to be mindful of the conditions... I f you're clever you can always find a place to catch a few waves even if the wind is howling out of the south (#2).  Some might argue, especially , if it's coming out of the south... W e ran this photo (#1) that LoLa took a couple of days ago and failed to add the caption.  This was taken just after sunrise and the sun was at such an oblique angle that this sun-dog of a rainbow made an appearance on the western horizon.  We can't remember seeing anything quite this dramatic with the morning sun...  Then there were those who thought the sun had decided to turn around and come up on the opposite horizon...  Don't even say the flat-earthers might have something... R aining this morning with visibility down to a couple of hundred yards at times.  Winds were out of the ESE by 9kts and the sea surface was smooth, with a rolling bump.  The air temperature was 53.3 and the water is still 60.8.  High tide was at 4:57am +5.2' and low tide will be at 12:18pm +0.4'.  We have a WSW swell out of 248º at 5.9' and it was from 4' to overhead at most spots that were working.  If you didn't mind the rain there were some good ones...

Still Tacky Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... O n an unseasonably warm winter day (that would be 40 º) in Boston a hundred years ago a molasses tank holding 2.3 million gallons exploded, drenching the entire North End of Boston and killing 21 people.  They were making ethanol from Puerto Rican molasses and with the rise in temperature the molasses began to ferment.  In the afternoon witnesses heard what sounded like machine gun fire.  It was the rivets popping off of the tank!  The tank split open near the bottom sending a wall of molasses down the main street.  It engulfed people and horses and began hardening into crystallized muck.  When rescue workers cracked into the hardened goo they found victims frozen like in the ashes of Pompeii!  Everything was tacky for literally years. Maybe you still get a whiff of molasses on a hot day... (from " What the Fact ?!") C loudy this morning with a threat of rain (probably more likely in the afternoon.)  Visibility about 5 miles and winds out of the ENE b
