Ham Sandwich Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... "Sometimes he's up there on the nose for so long you can just imagine he could eat a ham sandwich and just keep riding all day."   Bruce Brown talking about Lance Carson at Malibu, while we're talking about Christian Stutzcanhang at Tlayuda Point...  Yep, there were some good ones!  And everyone seemed to have a moment, including Doc, who managed to discuss wave etiquette in Swedish, Spanish, Danish, Israeli, French and English. Here in the South Bay we had cloudy skies and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the south from the start at 2 to 3kts and the sea surface was a bit textured.  The air temp was 58º and the water refusing to hit 60 stalled at 59.7º.  Low tide was at 5:53am +1.1' and high tide follows at 11:36am +3.2'.  It's a SSW swell out of 200º true at 2.3' and it was 2' and weak... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

The Lost Island Of Santosha Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S o, we ran across this rare view from the jetty (#1) of the Santosha drag strip.  By the way do you know the difference between a groin and a jetty?  A groin is a medium sized structure built perpendicular to the shoreline.  They are not built to create any kind of harbor and are typically used to effect wave energy patterns and sand movement.  The rocks at Topaz are a groin, not a jetty.  A jetty is usually longer and narrower than a groin and is typically built on both sides of a rivermouth or inlet.  Seal Beach is a good example of jetties. T here's 10 miles visibility under lightly clouded skies.  Winds were zephyr like at 1kt and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a chilly 48.3º and the water is 59.4º.  High tide was at 10:53am +3.8' and low tide is at 4:46pm +1.1'.  We have a SW swell out of 224º at 3.0' and it was 2' to 3' as the tide took it's toll early. ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!

Seems Like We Just Left Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Yes!  We're back and ready to jacket up and put our warmer sandals on.  Mexico was sporting warm water (82º), warm air (85º) and hot food (woo-woo on the Ed Scale).  Speaking of Doc, he was up until late waiting for Rita and killing all of the Insectivores he brought back from the trip.  He was doing the "killa-cucaracha" and the Montezuma cha-cha simultaneously.  For all intents and purposes a good time was had by all and we snapped this little burner (#1) at Puerto on our way out... Looking through some rain washed hazy sun with 10 miles visibility.  Winds are slight onshore at 1 to 2kts and the sea surface has a slight tack.  The air was 52.0º and the water is 59.5º and can be 60º any time it wants.  High tide was at 10:19am +4.4' and low tide will be at 4:30pm +0.8'.  It's a scaled down SW swell out of 222º at 2.6' and it was 1' to 3' and some rideable little peaks if you could predict where they were going to break...  ✠

Unleashed Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T he wave of the day went to Steve O'Brien.  Actually it wasn't exactly the wave but the kickout.  He was zooming on this zipper of a right (#1 not the actual wave, but an actor) and got to the corner and sent his board straight into the stratosphere.  It went up at Mach 2.5, but came back twice as fast at a little over Mach 5.5.  It sounded like he had broken something when the leash whacked his board.  He was just lucky it didn't hit him!  Got everyone's attention though...   M ostly cloudy morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth, except for some rip tide action off Donny's Reef.  The air temp was 55.5º and the water is 58.6º.  Low tide was at 9:47am +0.6' and high tide follows at 4:41pm +2.7' for a pretty damned low high tide... A t a touching ceremony this afternoon, we gathered to celebrate the life of Jim Sliff, Morgan's father.  A musician, a craftsman of stringed ins

Theotokos Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Nothing like having Capitan Donaldo sending great images of his trip to Mexico (#1).  Wait until he wakes up one morning and all of his compatriots are standing there wishing him a good day as they march to the surf... Meanwhile, here it's 10 miles visibility under partly cloudy skies.  Winds were offshore by 3 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air wasn't warm at 52.3º and the water wasn't that hot either at 58.5º.  Low tide at 8:02am +0.8' and high tide follows at 2:01pm +2.9'.  It's a SW swell out of 230º at 2.3' and it was 3'+ with some corners that didn't reveal themselves until you were on your way.  Was it a wall or could you make it?  What is Vegas saying? No class mañana or Monday, for the holiday, so let's see how many of the kids sleep in... ✠        "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Happy Valentine's Day Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... What better way is there to share a Happy Valentine's Day than to enjoy an adult beverage with your Valentine, even though all you gave her was a napkin with a hand drawn heart on it...  Okay, it came with the drink...  But it was hand drawn...   A little warmer this morning at 56.3º with the water hitting a 58.8º on the Fahrenheit scale.  15 miles visibility under partly cloudy skies.  Winds were out of the east by 3 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  Low tide was at 6:37am +0.8' and high tide fills in at 12:27pm +3.7'.  We have a WSW swell out of 250º at 2.3' and it was 2' to 4' on the outside and mailing some of those new sandbars.  Still a little wally, but depending on the tide there can be a corner or two... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Galentines Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Yes, "Galentine's Day" is our latest addition to the pantheon of holidays.  Apparently it's an holiday when the girls get to fete each other without the burden of male intrusion.  Of course Valentine's Day is still on the books, so don't feel like you're off the hook gentlemen.  We could suggest "Palentine's Day" for the day after Valentine's where guys can hang out and give each other those little hearts with the cute slogans.  Our research has so far discovered no Saints Gal or Pal, so these must be pagan holidays.  We're already doing "Festivus", so what's a couple more... A beautiful if not chilly morning with 46.5º in the air and 58.8º in the water.  Winds added to ✠the chill at 3 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  A couple of tides in the a.m. with a low at 5:28am +0.8' and a high at 11:25am +4.7'.  There's a west swell out of 267ºat 2.6' and it's about twice that at

Mimeographic Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Honestly, can't you smell the aroma of a freshly mimeographed sheet of paper?  And it wasn't merely ordinary paper.  It was thin and seemed like it had a bit of plastic in it.  The masters were typed and then strapped to the big printing wheel.  The early ones were hand cranked, but when they added an electric motor, you felt like Gutenberg...  But a little light headed... Some little zippers this morning (#1) a few even zipping out of the office!  It was cloudless and +20 miles visibility.  Winds were light offshore 4 to 6kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a really chilly 43.3º and the water is not so hot at 59.0º.  High tide was at 10:32am +5.6' and low tide will be in the minuses at 5:03pm -0.5'.  It was a west swell out of 262º at 2.3', but it was at least twice that big in the surf line at 3' to 5'. Hoping your team won the Super Galactic Commercial Taylor Swift Bowl! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it&quo

Palm Springs Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co… Out here in the desert trying to figure out which way to the ocean… But in Hermosa it looks like hazy sun and 10 miles visibility.  The water is 59 and the air is 54.5.  High tide was at 8:18am 6.7' and low tide follows at 3:22pm -1.7'.  The forecast says 3' to 4' and the buoy is reading 3.9' out of the WSW.  If you're ready to brave the bacteria - go for it… Since they've come out with basically self driving cars a lot of folks have started to let their animals drive.  A good example here as this German Shepherd parks his VW. It's On Our List Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Susan Sontag said, "I haven't been everywhere, but it's on my list."  We get it.  So this week we'll be in Palm Springs checking out the Polo matches and maybe dropping by the wave pool (which we understand has taken quite a bit of flack for using so much water in it's desert environment.  Not that this year should count.)  But fear not, we'll try valiantly to bring you the report using some recently acquired technology.  Meanwhile, not many people braving it this morning as the wind continues to roughen things up and the bacteria count remains high.  Beautiful morning however with partly cloudy skies and some warm sun poking through.  Winds are shifting from west to north to back again at 4 to 15kts and are scheduled to freshen up during the day.  The air temp is 49.0º and the water is 59.2º.  High tide was at 7:28am +6.6' and low tide will follow at 2:42pm -1.7'.  Lots of sand continues to be washed into the surfline with th

More Weather Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Unstable weather, a bit more rain and a lot of wind forecast for the next couple of days.  But if you were quick on your feet and didn't mind charging the bacteria soaked water, you might get a left like this slab that Jackson Owens caught just south of the office! It was partly cloudy this morning and the sun deigned to peek out occasionally.  Maybe 10 miles visibility.  Winds were variable offshore and the sea surface ranged from a rolling swell to downright choppy conditions.  The air was a chilly 45.9º and the water is 58.1º.  High tide was at 6:41am +6.2' and low tide drains at 2:07pm -1.4'.  It was a WSW swell out of 262º, before it turned due west at 5.2' and it was 5' to 8' in the water and early looked inviting despite the bacteria lurking in the water.  Worth a look mañana, but NOAA is telling us it's going to be windy and unsettled...  Look anyway... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

It's Like Thunder, Lightning, The Way You Love Me Is Frightening Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I n case you're wondering what you're looking at (#1), this is a shot from the Hermosa Pier this morning of a totally new sandbar in the middle of, what might be considered, 11th St.  This is good news!  We also observed evidence of several other similar sand bars on both side of the pier.  Capitan Donaldo reported that possibly 12' of sand had been eaten up in this last storm.  When the weather calms down we can busy ourselves exploring some of these new bumps. R aining this morning with less than a mile visibility.  The winds were swirling all over the place from 8 to 12kts and the sea surface was uneven and ruffled.  The air temperature was 51.3º and the water is 59.7º.  If you think that's warm for this time of year, you'd be right.  The forecasters have been telling us that it's a characteristic of El Niños to have warmer water temps.  They allow more water to be sucked into the atmosphere and then dumped on us as liquid sunshine.  Hig

Rainy Days & Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... We were graced with the presence of none other than Steve "Big Daddy" Brodhead this morning.  Joining LoLa, Jetski, Tarsan, Clarke, Laurie, Capitan Donaldo and the Professor it was a lively discussion that encompassed everything from A.I. to the atmospheric river.  Speaking of the atmospheric river, it continues to rain, sometimes heavily throughout the morning.  Visibility at times is limited and expect some inoperative traffic lights, like on the corner of PCH and Torrance Blvd.  Winds are out of the ESE at 3 to 15kts, bending everything the wrong way.  Catalina has a great collection of palm fronds if your tiki hut is in need of a new roof.  The air temperature is 54.3º and the water is 59.7º.  High tide is at 4:54am +5.2' and low tide will be fighting the runoff at 12:50pm -0.5'.  Currently it's a WSW swell out of 244º at 8.5' and it's hitting most beaches at 8' to 10' and gray and cloudy The beaches have lost another 12&#

R ainbows are where you find them!  So this one happened to be fueling the Wiggly Bus.  We're not sure if it's energy efficient but it is biodegradable!  No gold in the glove compartment. D id you look out the window this morning?  Yeah, it's blowing like a son-of-a-gun or maybe even harder.  We recorded a top speed of 25kts early this morning.  Great visibility though, with the air at 54.1º and the water at 60.6º.   Low tide was at 9:36am +1.6' and high tide follows at 3:08pm +2.3'.  We have a chaotic WSW swell out of 258º at 7.5' and it could be anywhere from 7' to 10' depending on the wind and the tide. W e just got a new computer and we're (meaning our tech support guru Marco) working on migrating our data and all kinds of good stuff to the new machine.  We're hoping it makes things a bit easier, faster and current! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Red Sky In Morning Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... R aining like crazy this morning, so we hid in bed until the last moment. L ike 200yds visibility through the raindrops.  Winds were offshore up 25kts and the sea surface was buffed.  The air was a soggy 51.9º and the water is amazingly 61.0º.  Low tide was at 7:48am +1.9' and high tide follows at 12:52pm +2.8'.  So it was a WSW swell out of 258º at 8.5', hitting the beach at 8' to 10' and grabbing some more sand in the process.  I f you were paying attention yesterday morning you caught the "red sky in morning" and had a chance to get ready! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!
