The Lost Island Of Santosha Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

So, we ran across this rare view from the jetty (#1) of the Santosha drag strip.  By the way do you know the difference between a groin and a jetty?  A groin is a medium sized structure built perpendicular to the shoreline.  They are not built to create any kind of harbor and are typically used to effect wave energy patterns and sand movement.  The rocks at Topaz are a groin, not a jetty.  A jetty is usually longer and narrower than a groin and is typically built on both sides of a rivermouth or inlet.  Seal Beach is a good example of jetties.

There's 10 miles visibility under lightly clouded skies.  Winds were zephyr like at 1kt and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a chilly 48.3º and the water is 59.4º.  High tide was at 10:53am +3.8' and low tide is at 4:46pm +1.1'.  We have a SW swell out of 224º at 3.0' and it was 2' to 3' as the tide took it's toll early.
